College Federal Work Study Programs Pros & Cons And What To Expect

- In this video, we discuss the College Federal Work Study Programs Pros & Cons. Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study. Here’s a quick overview of Federal Work-Study. It provides part-time employment while you are enrolled in school. It’s available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with financial need. It’s available to full-time or part-time students. It’s administered by schools participating in the Federal Work-Study Program. Check with your school's financial aid office to find out if your school participates. The Federal Work-Study Program emphasizes employment in civic education and work related to your course of study whenever possible. If you work on campus, you’ll usually work for your school. If you work off campus, your employer will usually be a private nonprofit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest.
Some schools might have agreements with private for-profit employers for work-study jobs. These jobs must be relevant to your course of study (to the maximum extent possible). If you attend a proprietary school (i.e., a for-profit institution), there may be further restrictions on the types of jobs you can be assigned.

I’m starting a work study program in January at $15 a hour. During down time we are allowed to work on school work which is awesome.
Wow $15 is a lot for work study. Thank you for watching
yeah mines offering 13 an hr haha. pretty nice actually.
A rep from college called me saying I qualified to apply for work study, I didn’t fully understand what it was but this vid helped a lot. Thank you sir.
I'm glad I could help thank you for watching
lol this just happened to me
I'm confused. Let's say you get offered $3,000 for one semester in work study. If you do the math ($3000÷ 4 months ÷ 4 weeks in a month ÷ 20 hours a week...), you only get paid $9.36 per hour, assuming you can only work the required hours. Other than the possibility of having free time for homework, the convenience of it being on campus, and not having to commute, why is this better than simply taking a $12/hr job that allows you to to work 40 hours per week?
It's borderline useless compared to a sectional payment plan UNLESS the workstudy does any sort of price matching. Otherwise, you're taking out a loan AND paying off a smaller loan, but you're doing a job that you can't entirely choose, with a chance of downtime, is part time and is only marginally better than minimum wage.
I am baffled. If my child was granted work study, why is she having to pay back during tax times? She has a small side job to help her out but she earned less than $13K. She was getting all of the taxes back until work study was put in. That is frustrating and wrong. Just does not seem worth it to get funding and have to pay it back.
Wonderfully helpful video, thanks man!!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Roxbury High School Class of 2022
Thank you for watching your high school has been counted
Thank you for the Great Video. Very Helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello, I'm an undergrad student and I was recently awarded a work study of $8,613 (per semester) to work as an english tutor at an elementary school for $25/hour at a 10-20 hour per week minimum. I fully believe I am capable of doing this and that it fits my schedule, nevertheless, I would like to ask for your opinion on this award. What course of action should I take towards this award package? Do you feel I should appeal for a grant instead (note that I already receive pell grant)?
That is way too much work-study
I would definitely appeal for less work-study and switch with grants
thank you for your video, very helpful
Thank you for watch.
My work study offer is for $4500, however in Seattle minimum wage is 15 but the jobs on campus pay around 17/hr
Wow $17 an hour is really good for work study
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 it is!
Hi I have a question
If I accept my work-study does it mean I have to work right away or Can I wait unit the next semester/ quarter?
No you can by pass it the first semester even the 1 year.
Howdy, I was offered one that was 4000 for the entire year (2000 a semester). I have never worked a day in my life, will that be ok? I am required to work 19 hours a week, what would my schedule look like? Thanks
I would appeal this and ask for grant money instead
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 Can you explain why? Thanks
@@okiagreebut5609 The amount to too much most work-study awards are around $2,000 for the year
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 so does that mean that working for 2000 a semester isnt worth it or that i can be given grant money to replace this?
@@okiagreebut5609 It means it very tough to do

I was given an opportunity to apply for WS as a tutor. However, I was asked if I was interested in canceling my unaccepted loans in exchange for the program. Would it make any difference if I canceled my loans or not for WS?
Did they cancel your loans to make space in your budget to award you the work-study? I ask because with work-study it has to fit your budget for the college's Cost of Attendance.
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 they haven’t as far as I know, but my original loan didn’t include any work study grant. Which is why I’m assuming why I was given the option to cancel my already existing loan offer
@@antte_ I would definitely ask the college break as long as you have the space in your budget you can have both
@@antte_ It more than likely is why
Seattle might pay around $19 an hour now a days
Hi Ed - so if my son starts W/S in fall then when they break - does he need a new job or he returns to the same one? Thanks you!
He should be able to return to the same one. He can elect to change jobs too if he wants to do something different.
Not quite understanding the payout… so if my daughter accepted ($1500) and will work on campus, she will receive a check every 2 weeks, but I don’t understand how this helps towards tuition if essentially she’s just getting paid to work. How does this affect her tuition cost? Maybe I’m just lost 🤔
She will only get a check if she works the hours required. Each college pays out differently some pay weekly some bi-weekly
Wait so you're telling me that since Im capped out at $800 per term, and id be making $15.50 an hour, I can only work a max of 50-60 hours per term? And then what? They're not obligated to pay me anymore? They'll terminate my job? I think its ridiculous, might as well get a off campus job for those students who actually need money
This is agent your … so I have never held any-job but I’m planning to start working this April.. and I already got my fafsa money and I’m going to college in September. If I start working in April will that affect me with fafsa money??? Help
Since they said that work study is not directed to dorms or tuition but if the work study money comes back to your account can it then be used for dorms ?
The student is usually paid directly. You can use the money once they are paid to go towards college expenses
How is the Federal work-study award distributed, does it come from our check or is it seperate?
Most colleges pay you every week to every two weeks the check is from the college.
IHA 2023 Good to know!!
I have been awarded $3,000 ($1,500
Per semester) work study and only $1,400 pell grant. Can I appeal the $3000 work study and get it added to my pell grant instead?
$3,000 is about average for a work-study program now a days but I would appeal it to see if they can add some seog instead
I got offered $4,928 for work-study. Does that mean I have to work until I pay off $4,928???
It means you must work all the hours required to get the whole $4,928
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 okay thank you
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 would I still receive money for personal cost? Or would my whole check go towards the work study money?
@@ma99otfood The work-study money would typically be given to you each week or two weeks depending on how much you worked

Can I ask my work study money to go to educational grants?

How much is the college and what is your EFC?
I have a ton of questions.. my daughter in AZ get $1750.00 in work-study, If she works at school does she get a paycheck?
if she does work-study then yes she gets a pay check
Does international students have to apply for work study program?
omg i accepted this and thought it was a grant. since the money wont be given until i work the amount off, is there any way i can just cancel it ??? also, is it necessary to work during the exact semester you accepted it?? like if i accepted work study for the incoming semester, does it HAVE to be done during that semester???
Even if you accept it does not mean you have to do it
can I work my work study job on a day I don't have class??
You can do the hours when ever job work-study job is possible
I got offered $6,100 for work study but I work a full time job at $16/hr so it sounds like this wouldn’t help me.
That's way too much money for a work-study. I would definitely look to appeal this amount in exchange for grant money
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 what’s the best way to do that? Contact my financial aid office?
@@madi3191 Yes contact the financial aid office and ask them what you need to do to to send in a financial aid appeal
Montana $4 an hr 💀
Hey what is difference between Institutional work study and federal work study
Federal work study is money the gov gives the colleges to employee students.
If the school has institutional work programs this typically means the school is paying the students from the departments budget. Federal does not count against financial aid the other does since its like any other job.
How does that work during the pandemic being that less people are needed
Are you asking if there is less work study programs?
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 more of what happens to the money if the student can’t work for the work-study money because there’s no jobs available
@@tyycha1324 They lose it usually. The college will only pay it out if they work
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 thank you
totally throwing my experience out there .... but I am currently doing work-study for the outreach/recruitment center at my college and everything is remote. so we have zoom trainings and zoom meetings. I was sad that there weren’t any jobs ON CAMPUS but there were remote jobs available!
I accepted a work study position will I receive the remainder of my pell grant that I didn’t use or will they pay me from work study with the money instead?
You will only receive your workstudy money after you complete the work hours. Usually they pay you each week or so.
@@edzamoracollegeprepchannel3820 is that a separate entity from the pell grant funds ?
@@januarijohnson4957 The Fafsa helps get both

Ugh, I never worked a job for $7.25. It seems like a waste of time.
It all depends
Well considering you don't have to pay Medicaid Etc out of it and it doesn't count against your financial aid it kind of balances out. Also like he said you may very well be able to get paid to be doing your homework etc. most of the time..
@@positivevibesdiys496 Yes paid to read is not a bad deal. Thank you for watching .
