Boating Through Georgian Bay - Midland to Henry's Restaurant

  • This segment of our summer boat cruise takes us from Midland, Ontario on Georgian Bay - leaving the Town Docks and passing over to Bayport Yachting Centre. Leaving Bayport, we traveled northward through Honey Harbour and into the heart of the beautiful Thirty Thousand Islands region.
    Our ultimate destination for the day (and subsequent three nights) was the 'world famous' Henry's Fish Restaurant. Henry's is a simple fish and chips restaurant, stuck on an island in an area known as Sans Souci, which translates to 'without cares'. As it is situated on an island, access is only by way of boat or float plane - both which are happy to make the trip to this special place.
    Trying to capture the awesome beauty of this area is challenging, as one must see it first hand to really 'get it'. That said, I'm happy to share these clips with you, so that you may get an idea of the rugged beauty that defines this area.
    ** NOTE ** There is a short segment with no audio just after the 16 minute mark. This is intentional.
    Filmed in July of 2015.
    Captured with Sony HXR-NX30-U video camera & GoPro Hero 3
    Location of this video: 45.17444 -80.13668 (Henry's Restaurant)

    Known as the best fresh water cruising grounds in the world, Georgian Bay is located in the heart of the Great Lakes and forms part of Lake Huron. Renowned for is rugged beauty, Georgian Bay has been attracting adventurous boaters for over a century, but it's rocky shoreline and challenging navigation routes are not for the faint hearted and must be approached with the greatest care and respect. I'm happy to share our own adventures through this inspiring area with my 'Georgian Bay Boating' Playlist here: • Georgian Bay Boating

    God's Country me daddy called it. My parents went there for the 1st time in 1947. You ought to see those old photos, THAT was REALLY roughing it! Such a beautiful place with so many wonderful people we still call family. Havent been since 2004, my 1st time there in 1962 we would some summers stay 5 weeks! Back when most all American's made a good living and could travel and have a most memorable time!
    Good company, the most clean and beautiful waters, great fishing, camp cookouts over a flaming fire, leopard frogs, garner snakes, beaver dams, moose, fox, french fries and gravy and Labatt's Blue!! There is no other place like it.

    You comment, when going through Monument Channel, that it must be hellish in the winter. It is just as beautiful in the winter, different, but beautiful. People I know who only boat Georgian Bay don't recognize where they are when I take them up by snowmobile, but still can't believe how beautiful it is.

    The Waubuno is 150 years old this year and has been underwater for 136 years. Launched 1865 and sank in a winter storm on Nov 22th, 1879. Was a passenger/freight steam side-wheel coming from Collingwood and heading for Parry Sound. Where she foundered is not known but the remains of the hull ended up between Wreck Island and Bradden Island.

    Question Paul.When calling a port.What channel or channels are used on the VHF radio?

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  9 років тому

      +Keith OB Channel #68 is used for calling marinas that monitor VHF traffic. I can't tell you how many times we hear boaters attempting to hail a marina on 16 - before someone lets them know that they should try 68. . .
      If you listen closely at the 24:30 mark of this video, you should hear the dock attendant calling me and mentioned that he's on 6-8.

    • @chrisfarquhar9032
      @chrisfarquhar9032 6 років тому

      Yep, 16 is Coast Guard. The go to call before 911 since they have boats in the water usually much closer than the mainland.

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  6 років тому

      Another benefit of calling for assistance on channel 16 is that other #boaters close by might hear and offer help.

    How long at a nice pace like you were going would you say it would take to go from Parry Sound - Midland?

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  5 років тому

      Taking the 'inside' Main Small Craft Route, as in this video, it takes us roughly three hours Midland to Henry's and then two hours from Henry's to Big Sound Marina at Parry Sound. That is cruising slow all the way, at around 8-10 MPH.
      Of course, if one wanted to go a little quicker in spots where wake isn't an issue for other #boats or shoreline property owners, you could shave some off that. The other option would be to take the big water, out in the open Georgian Bay, where there's no concern about speed limits, but you would miss all this beautiful scenery.

  • @fkordalewski

    It fits biblical timelines better too. however no longer glacial slow carving but a meltdown of the ice.
