Awake to the Gospel - Awake & Alive - Sermons - Matt Chandler - 2/5/23

  • Galatians 3:1-5
    Having begun their relationship with Christ by a work of the Spirit, the Galatian believers turned to their own works in hopes of perfection. Paul said they had been bewitched into something distorted and evil-a different gospel, which was no gospel at all. In the same way, we can be so church-adjacent, full of facts about Jesus, but never truly know Him. The call is to wake up, get rooted in truth, and marvel at the good news of Jesus Christ.
    We exist to love God, love people, and make disciples of Jesus Christ.

    This gave me so much comfort and reassurance that, though I stumbled a lot the first year that I was truly saved, that the Lord didn’t abandon me and my conversion was real. I don’t have the mental focus atm to write my whole testimony, but I’ll give a just sum of it. I found myself living in a self destructive cycle. When I realized it, I was in the throes of deep grief over a lost friend and was crying to the point of hysteria. This was at my job almost perfectly a year ago now. I finally, from the cold floor of the gas station cooler, cried out “God I can’t live like this anymore!” I haven’t been the same since

    The hardest part of not being critical of your fellow congregation of believers is when you watch them caving to progressive christianaity. When you believe God is the same yesterday, today and always, and you can see them turning to match what society is preaching. And that is BOTH sides of politics. I'm not crunching on just one side.

    The problem in Texas is not legalism, it's licentiousness. It's turning grace into license. It's trees without fruit, twice DEAD & plucked up by the roots.
    The obedience of faith (working through love). Romans 1:5, 16:26
    Do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God. Romans 2:4-11

      I would strongly disagree about Texas. In the last ten years of my walk, I actually haven't met anyone in any of the churches that I've been to that have the idea of "sin all the more". I do have a ton of experience with people adding things to the gospel constantly.

    • @charlespackwood2055
      @charlespackwood2055 Рік тому

      @@Huero87 I haven't heard a message against sin in Texas since Bible College. My grandfather is from Texas, my dad was born in Texas, I've spent more time in Texas than anywhere else. I really believe that most people in Churches here believe that living in sin is the opposite of legalism. Texas used to be the big, cowboy buckle in the Bible belt. If the Bible belt is lukewarm, this country is going to hell unless a 'not fake' revival takes place.

    Matt I don't think you realize that Jesus will save every single one of his sheep called the elect because of his good pleasure and will. Not one will be lost. So if he Jesus decides to gift you the white rob of righteousness there is no way you can refuse or lose your salvation. Just remember none of us deserve God no not one. So with that said if Jane was in the Lambs book of life then she is with Jesus to this day. Amen. You tracking with me man? To quote a famous person lol

    I love you, Matt, but I believe in this case you’re staring the people wrongly. You can’t say it’s covenant when throughout the entire New Testament, Jesus and the other Bible writers talk about abiding in him and remaining in him and staying true to him as Lord so it’s not just a once and forever, no matter what you do thing because your heart was genuine and real when you said yes. Remember just as you excepted Christ Jesus, so you must continue to follow him.

    I think this guy's msg. is that the way is wide that leads to life & many will find it and enter.
    “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Matthew 7:13-15

    • @aetherwise2159
      @aetherwise2159 Рік тому

      I think we were listening to two different sermons, brother. I don’t hear anything that makes the gate wide, I hear scripturally accurate admission that stumbling in your faith does not mean you have to agonize over whether you’re saved. Context matters. The gate Christ refers to is those few that would actually love and follow him. His scope in that statement is the entire population, or one could argue maybe for Israel specifically. The context here of Chandler’s sermon AND the verses he uses are WITHIN those that claim to be believers. Meaning the scope is those that are already claiming to have walked through that narrow gate. If anything, he’s made the gate narrower because of sharing the scary truth that just because you show up Sunday and check all the boxes, you can do all of that and STILL have missed the gate and not even have a relationship with Christ. That’s not a wide gate. It’s a wide view of God’s mercy on his children, who fall on their need for Christ.

      @@aetherwise2159 I didn't see any conviction from his pulpit. No blazing light that's for sure. I heard maybe 3 weeks of his sermons. Nothing expository. Nothing 🥩 beefy. Nothing about the dangers of sin. I think there was more jokes than straight up Word. Nothing to make me sober minded or anything that made me look at my life or relationships. I think the pastor is aiming for a Mega Church. If i had to guess, id say the Pastor had like a 10 to 15 min. prayer life, and maybe the same in the Word.... but probably less. You're probable in the same ballpark.The last time I was at His church, was like the week before it came out that he was texting somebody else's wife.
      It's been my experience that people don't usually go from being the Apostle John to Bingo the Clown overnight. So I extrapolated a little, weighed it on the balance, and considered it wanting. ( I kinda saw the same thing in Ravi Zacharias, too ) Guess we have different goals man. We all are gonna have to stand before God and give an account. And you and he won't be able to have your buddies there with you. Wood, hay and stubble? Anyway, thanks for calling me out.

    • @aetherwise2159
      @aetherwise2159 Рік тому

      @@charlespackwood2055 So, let’s take a quick second to realign here. We both love Christ and are pursuing a life of obedience and submission to God’s Word, correct? We both believe that our only hope in life and death is clinging to Christ as the propitiation for our sins, and that there is NO salvation outside of Christ? If those assumptions are correct, then we are at least brothers in the faith to those crucial points. So we have a problem to examine in that you’ve made an unkind assumption about both my prayer life and my need for ‘buddies’ before the throne of judgement, and something in my initial comment was clearly insulting or rude for you to feel provoked toward that. So inasmuch as I don’t want to stir up quarreling amongst believers, I apologize for my way of speaking. The response to your experiences are logical, and I would even agree to your thoughts on expository style. In the context of your other experiences, your original comment makes more sense, but the specifics of what you called out didn’t seem to me to be at play in this sermon standing on its own. And honestly, the text thing was disappointing, but I was impressed to see a church and high profile pastor actually follow the biblical model for church discipline instead of trying to hide it, not something I think compares fairly to Ravi’s failings and deception.

      @@charlespackwood2055 I don’t want to appear like I think Chandler is infallible or that I swear by his every word, I just hold the belief that if we, as believers are going to draw battle lines against each other, they must be for biblically specific and biblically potent reasons. Not liking someone’s style or finding it lacking is one thing, but accusations of false teaching are another level that seemed unwarranted from this sermon.
