I love Italy in general, and you're right Milan is definitely a beautiful place. Great video :)

I have to say that from an Italian point of view THE university city is Bologna. Milan still has many universities, Rome has many too (I can count at least 4 and I'm sure that there are many that I can't remember now) but if you want to go to university in Italy the place to go is Bologna (population of about 400000, students are about ¼). Beside this, I quite agree that Milan is pretty much underrated and i like it a lot.

Bologna has the oldest university in the world. It is a beautiful city. But Bolo is for artists. Milano is for economics.

Tya I'm Italian and when I moved to Milan months ago I was really upset because I really thought that this city was grey, sad and posh. But from the very first day I came I completely changed my mind and now I love it for all the reasons you said in the video. I wish I could live here forever!
P.S. the university city in Italy is Bologna, no one thinks to Florence as THE university city.

So true! Thank you so much for supporting such a beautiful city! I'm Italian from Como but spent many years in Milan and I always love to go there for all the reasons you just said.. I don't know why it got that bad reputation of being sad and grey.. Cheers

Hei great channel! I am from Milan and I am an expat to the UK.. and of course I miss my city a lot for most of the reasons you mention in your videos (but, as you say, Milano is well connected with airports). Ah, I would add another one, Milano is quite close to the mountains.. and I miss my Alps! eheh.
I think it got this stigma of "grey city" because in the past decades (let's say after WW2) many many people came there to work from the south, and of course they were missing the seaside, the sun, the olives etc.. Just as much as I miss Milano now.. But we natives have a way to say in Milanese dialect "Canten tücc 'luntan de Napuli se mör', ma pö i vegnen chì a Milan." which in English I think it would translate "They all are singing 'Away from Napoli we die', but then they are coming to Milan"

Great Tia! Finally an intelligent person making intelligent remarks on "my" beloved Milano! What can I say: thank you for saying aloud what I've always thought about the city. Personally I'm not much of a fascionista but I'm glad that Milan is so well known about and surely is the most cosmopolitan city in Italy. P.s. don't tell a roman!

+Tia Taylor Well I live in Rome but I like Milan and, as you said, Milan is certainly more "european" (Turin and Trieste feel pretty european too). Furthermore, talking about events, Milan has "La Scala" and other theatres which usually stage better productions than the theatres here in Rome. Anyway I actually prefer WILD cities like Rome and Naples ahahaha! Talking about diversity, have you ever been to Naples? You'd be surprised... Naples is one of the most diverse cities in Italy.

I Would like to watch more videos in whic you speak about your impressions about Italian cities :).And of course i'd like watch a Video on my full of problems but still beautiful Naples .

Just found this video now, and I'm so glad we share the same opinion! I lived in Milan for half a year in my exchange period and got the exactly same vibe from other people that said Milan was ugly. And I think that the majority of people that like Milan are the ones who live or lived there, because we got to experience all the things Milan has to give... It is an unique city, and I never knew I could love a place so much as I do !

You said you don't know why Milan got its bad reputation. I think one reason might be that it really changed during the last years. I moved to Milan as a child in 2000, and I've seen that change: everything has improved a little bit, we have now more green and pedestrian areas, some neighbourhood have been rebuilt (think of Gae Aulenti, Navigli, le Tre Torri being built right now, the subway). It's as if the city suddenly woke up. I think it's a great moment to live here. Also, I believe many Italians still think of Milan as an industrial city, which it was in the past, but now the factories are closed or work in a different way.
I've been wondering about some of your same questions because, despite being Italian, I'm not originally from Milan and my boyfriend and many friends are not from Milan and I feel like I have to constantly stand up for the city... and I've observed two things:
1, people apparently simply DON'T know about Milan's museums, churches, monuments. They don't consider La Scala such a big thing, they don't know there are dozens of theatres proposing an amazing number of plays each season (it took my boyfriend's passion for the stage to make me discover that). Milan has Romans ruins and Medieval rests (well, just the Castle itself...) but somehow, since they're not as imposing as i Fori in Rome, they don't count.
    2. many people think that Milanese are rude and that they are all right-winged because Berlusconi was originally from here. This is a bit political but it needs to be said that Milan had actually a role in many popular movements since the unification and before because it was traditionally a leftist city. Though it's true that nowadays you will find a lot of people voting for the extremist party or just "figli di papà" (meaning, the children of rich people who made money with industry or television), it's a recent thing. But many people in Italy simply do not consider that?...
(Ps: Sorry for the rant; compliments and thank you for your insightful videos!)

I quite agree with what you're saying because I love Milan , I love its organization and I love the fact that in the same city you can find very old monuments and the most recent and highest buildings, very technological. I also like the fact that you can easily find a job, especially in financial stuff. On the other side I don't like the shape of Milan. It looks so flat in residential areas and there are no panoramic places or something. It also looks so dirty in some places. But there is no city in Italy in which you can't find some dirty places so... moreover it is very polluted because of the smog and its position isn't the best in order to make the pollution go away (usually there is no wind).

I agree with everything you said! The only thing is that I believe you can find more traditional Italian food in other parts of Italy. Sure, Milan is great when you want to find very diverse types of cuisine and food from all over the world, but there are other places in Italy that just don't compare with Milan.
Also, I would say my favorite Italian city must be Rome. I mean, yeah, Milan is probably more organized, but Rome is "caput mundi" if you know what I mean xD I hope you'll get the chance to live in other Italian cities too so you can tell the difference!

Hi beautiful!! I am also an expat living in Milan (since April) and I am incredibly excited about hearing you were able to go to fashion week? This is news to me! Hey! I saw that you did not get a reply so I can maybe help you :) Torino is smaller than Milan and there's less to do, but still it is an enjoyable and walkable city. It is also well-connected to Milan( it takes one hour to get from a city to the other). I visited it( I am from Milan) and I though that I wouldn't dislike living there for a while. It is lively and pretty. Go there for your erasmus, you won't regret it! Genoa( and so sea, beaches) is not the far either. Same for Aosta( beautiful mountains). Turin so it is perfectly located to take amazing trips!

  • @londinesedoc3072
    @londinesedoc3072 9 років тому +3

I love Milan. And it's getting better and better. Over the last 5-7 years Milan has had a huge urban renewal: porta nuova, la darsena e i Navigli and so on. It's maybe fair to say that during the 90' and the early 00' Milan has suffered a little cause the end of the so called "Milano da bere'' after the 80' and for this reason the city became a bit "grey" if you want to say so. But those Days are long gone. Just today Il Sole 24, which is the most important economic newspaper in Italy, released the annual survey about the "quality of living" among all the italian cities. the survey puts Milan in 2ND! Whereas Rome has fallen 16th. Lots of people hates Milan just because they are forced to move here to find a job (south Italians mostly) and they "link" their mood and frustration to Milan. and that even though Milan is the most welcoming city in Italy where nobody cares where you come from and offers an opportunity to everybody. Plus like you said there's always something to do. sadly haters will always be around talking shit...

Milan is little because it's a very old city, like almost all the cities in Italy, Milan didn't have the chance to increase its size during its history because of all the nearest little cities that were born close to Milan, cities like Sesto San Giovanni are, at the end, parts of Milan but are different cities.

+Tia Taylor lol the big citys are all pretty good in italy but beside that i dont really like it i went there for a class trip to viareggio which is the worst city ever. pisa and firenze where good but besides that ...
it was just like burning cash ... in the big cities you can do thinks but the class trip was like 50% bus driving 20% sleeping and the rest eating and visiting sights it was so boring why did we go to viareggio you cant do anything there everytime we came back there where literally NO stores opend. italy is good but besides the great city you cant do anything there so out of 100 italy is maybe a 40. i dont recommend italy to young people if you dont go to a bigger city. i only like itally cause they are very good at desining sportcars(lamborghini/ferrari/pagani) + shoes and clothes (most manufactures are in italy like moschino versace(i think so) giuseppe zanotti. and ofc the food but you dont have to go to italy to eat italian food so we can exclude that . maybe the most beautiful thing is the nature in the ligurian(?) alps but enough hate its still very beautiful just sayin that there are so many citys and countrys i would rather go to than italy

+SHRUIKAN The fact that you didn't find much to do in one place doesn't mean there's nothing to do all over the country. There's plenty of stuff to do even outside the bigger cities. Just have to travel by yourself, not with school. And you can't say you dislike a whole country only after seeing a single place, come on...

  • @DanieleElaborati

From my point of view, there's no "better" city or "best" city in italy. We have many ( and with that word i mean A LOT) of beatiful cities. I think that you should take some time to travel around the country and find out the differences among them all. I know, maybe it's time that you don't have, but there's no hurry. Take your time and try to dig deeper in our coulture , which is not the one you see in Milan...or at least that's just a part of it. Have you ever been in Bologna or Trento, just to name a few with a lot of history . And there are so many more i can't mention here. Our colture it's not all about fashion . It's more about craftmanship and dedication, like the one you would see from a worker in Murano, creating extremely fine glass works ,or from a man in Modena who can recognize the state of maturation of a Parmesan cheese just by tapping it with a small hammer and listening the sound it makes. Nightlife is great in many cities and are even more "man-size" than Milan. Milan it's a very important city, no one can deny it, it's always been and will be, but it's not the best...simply because there's no "best city" . Every place has it's pros and cons . So i have to say that i disagree ..even if it's just a poit of view. Anyway, keep up the good job you're doing with this channel. Watching at your channel has given me back the confidence in my country: a confidence i've lost long ago, especially in the people.

+Daniele Elaborati oh no! I'm sorry if you thought that I meant to say milan was the best city, I just think it's underrated! A lot of tourists especially think it's just duomo, galleria and fashion week but it's really so much more... I've been to venice, florence, bologna, rome and turin and I love each of those cities and find that they're all very different from one another. You're right, every city has it's pros and their cons but I never see too many videos praising Milan for what it has to offer so I just thought I'd put one out there. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you like my channel :)

1:44 Square kilometres: Milan 181.8, Paris 105.4. So yes, Milan isn't very big, but Paris Is smaller, wrong example!

All right but...Milan is bigger than Paris! 182kmq (Milan) against 105kmq (Paris)...Paris has a very big metropolitan area (the second in europe) but milan is the third, there's no much difference between. but the "city" of milan is bigger than the "city" of Paris!

      @misstiataylor_  9 років тому +2

You know i actually checked that after And you're right! Weird! People were always telling me before the trip that paris was bigger and moving around did take longer for me... Guess milan metros are just better;)

Paris within its administrative limits is the same size as Milan. But in reality, Paris metro area is one of the largest in Europe. So, you are not wrong, Paris is huge and much bigger than Milan. It's just about administrative limits of Paris that make confusion.

Obviously Milan looks ''ancient'' to you cause you're comparing it to US cities which are all pretty new and with low to none historical background to them (talking bout thousands of years ago)...however (we) Italians get to ''compare'' Milan to other Italian cities and thats basically why we dont fancy it that much or as much as a foreigner would

thats not what I said dont get me wrong I've been living in Milan and I find it pretty cool (maybe even more than other cities) all Im stating is that theres a bunch of other Italian cities which may be considered a lot more interesting from a historical point of view

Milan is Italy as NY is New Jersey. I'm sure that Milan is the best city to live in, but it is also the less Italian city of all. If you want a taste of everything there is to love and hate about Italy you'll should be moving south... maybe just as a tourist for small medium periods. Anyway you are doing a great job with this channel... congrats!!!

BTW Milan got its boring reputation because the Milanese are stereotypically "colder" people than most Italians, but if you go anywhere in the northern part Italy people are like this..I live in Turin and I can confirm that :D
