I got band 8.5 in speaking without using any idioms. Just as Chris always advises, speak naturally and don't think about what phrase or tense you should use. You'd be shocked how well you'll do in your test. Thank you so much Chris for your lessons, they were really helpful.

@Jess Nguyen for sure, but what Chris urges students is not to go for an exam to show off how many idioms you have learnt. Instead, just focus on answering the question. Applicants most of the time try to impress the examiner with lr going run out of things.

Thank you for making this videos and revealing the truth. I used to memorize idioms and phrases and actually used about 7 idioms on my test day which I learned from online "gurus " and I got 6 at speaking but now I'm trying to be natural and learning everything from native speakers like watching TV series and stuff like that. I really appreciate this and other his videos as well, thanks again 💜

You're one of the most reliable teachers, constantly myth-busting misinformation about IELTS, and it's well appreciated. I've been looking around your videos on Speaking-my weakness-and took the test last Saturday, got an 8.5. Can confirm the common belief of "You can't get a band 9 if you don't have an American/British accent" is false! Thank you. I managed to score that high with barely any idiomatic language, how astonishing. You've probably seen thousands of other thank you messages, but I can't help but show my gratitude! 💝

It’s a really nice video you've made. I always tell ielts candidates to imagine examiners as their students and think that when speaking they must believe that they are the best speakers in the world. I also tell an ielts examinee to speak naturally rather than using too many phrases as they might make idiotic expression instead of idiomatic one. And thanks to you as I learned that body language is not essential in speaking test.

I'm preparing myself to sit for ielts exam and I took part in Ielts exam back in October 8 in 2022 but only managed to get 6.5. I wasn’t happy about the outcome as I wish to get higher band score. Tell me how I can get 8.5/9 overall band score.

Dear teacher. I'm proud of you :) one of the best tips for me is to be simple and flexibility. I don't want to use so much old idioms, use at least one or two. But synonyms are very, very beneficial. I will recommend it for each of you. :)😄😊😊😊 :) Chris thanks.

I think you misunderstood these people who you are referring to. They are simply encouraging students to get confidence the same way you are doing it. For example, let's talk about why students from the subcontinent and it's connected regions are required to study some common questions. The answer is, here in our society we are not habituated of using English in our daily routines as we restrict it's usage for official or formal purposes ( eg. writing email, letters to superiors). Hence, to get confidence about a topic under discussion one needs to gain familiarity with common questions that one can face in the exam. Another example, having a good body language is all about building confidence. And that is what any student requires.
Yes, I do agree overwhelming can be a problem. But I think it arises for students who doesn't know the purpose of the IELTS exam.
BTW, your talk is always inspiring, especially you saying in some video that we do beat around the bush and don't often take a clear stance.
Thanks for such a wonderful video again.
