The Smallest Nintendo 64 Ever Made
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 чер 2020
- The iQue was a refined Nintendo 64 released in China during the early 2000s. This system was a much smaller N64 packing the entire system into a controller the sized of an original Xbox controller. The system itself was fairly impressive even coming out a bit faster than the original N64 console showing that Nintendo has created what is essentially a Nintendo 64 Mini in the past.

Everyone: "We want the N64 Classic"
China in the 2000's: "Been there, done that"
Also, I wonder if it is possible to flash the firmware and replace the cartridge with an everdrive
Yeah, they should just release a slightly modernized version of the iQue and call it the N64 Classic.
@@GilWanderley i know its possible since in my city they sold those already prehacked.

"Not a lot of documentation on it"
The entire Verilog and OS source code leaked a couple months ago, along with tons of design documents. While not documented in the traditional way, in some ways it's now the best documented game console.
Yep ;)
Also Wii
the verilog is BIG! I'm assuming you mean for the SOC itself too? Haha I want one!
We need to decap the chip!
Old Liquid we have the source code it’s as good as cracked
It's basically a plug and play :-)
No!
Except that it’s not an emulator in that controller, and you have to buy all the games. But I guess you could plug it in and play Dr Mario. But ONLY Dr Mario.
Yeah sorta that's probably why this console got past the video game console ban that was in china at the time

Honestly, while I'm not a crazy "got get everything" sort of game collector, this is one of those oddball things I've always wanted.
It's also amazing to me that they got the N64 to be a system on a chip in 2003! The GameCube was only 2 years old, and heck, you could still go to a regular department store and buy N64 games in 2003!
I also dig the controller, I wish there was some way to play a regular N64 with it
Wake me up when you find the largest Nintendo 64 Ever Made
I'm still waiting for a N128 with big-ass cartridges bigger than Neo Geo cartridges.
Pretty sure that was the Pikachu edition.
It was slightly larger than a standard N64
The SGI Onyx? Good luck.
The Pokemon Snap kiosk?
The developer N64 is if you class that... It's like 5 n64 stacked on top of each other
Nintendo NEEDS to "reuse" this SOC for an upcoming N64 mini!
This is probably more expensive to make than using off the shelf ARM chips, remember, it was all custom hardware (especially the GPU part)
Not neccesarrilly. Because the cheap weaker ARM stuff can't do N64 emulation without a lot of glitches.
@@badwrongfun5541 But they can pick their Wii Mini's($99 at time, with Wii Remote+Nunchuk included) and fill it with N64 Virtual Console games in a new cute shell. They perform great in comparison to open source N64 emulation on cheap ARM chipset.
The problem:
It isn't manifacturerd anymore
It'll be a Raspberry Pie inside a N64 mini shell, with their own roms costs them $30.00 to make but will sell for $129.99.
The stick isn’t beat up because kids didn’t beat it to death playing Mario Party
So that's what it was .
Yep I didn’t have that problem but apparently it got crazy with the sticks

Best not tell these true fans there are several Sony chips inside most Nintendo boxes. May break their little hearts. ;)
@@linkthehero8431 that's kind of an idealized version of what actually happened. Sony retained the name that they and Nintendo agreed upon. "Playstation", both in name and effect is a permanent slap in the face to Nintendo and a reminder of whats possibly Nintendo's biggest failure.
Nintendo is finally making a comeback now, but they've been a joke for a long time.
@@sagaciousassessor6237 Nintendo a joke for a long time?, where?
It apparently is possible to inject different games into the system. Look up "iQueBrew". Hoping to get one of these so I can test it out myself.
Oof! I am going to look at this!
I’ve had this video in my Watch Later and I’m just watching it now but I just looked up the iQue on eBay and checked out iQue Brew so thank you for this cuz I might have to get an iQue system now, only thing stopping me is the resell pricing is a lil too much for my liking lol
What about officially released games, meaning not injecting a ROM into one of the demos, assuming the files are out there? There's no other way to get them since the store is shut down.
@@tyisafk As far as I know, all of the stock ROMs have been dumped. But I think they're also identical to the retail cart versions.
Imagine if they had reused the SOC for the Nintendo DS, N64 games coud have easily been ported to the DS and would perfom/look better since the RCP would have been faster also. I guess GBA compatability was one of the reasons they stuck with ARM
The internet: freaks out about Nintendo's collaboration with tencent
Nintendo in 2001:
They managed to integrate the CPU, the RDP and the RSP in one chip. That's really impressive.

I would not have change the results in that console war. A bit less slowdown in certain games, but speed was never the biggest criticism of the N64. It was the storage capacity, and the small texture cache that forces to have blurry textures everywhere.
It couldn’t have the power because this came out two years AFTER the game cube.

There were actually two models of the iQue. One has the mini-USB cable and the support built-in to connect to iQue servers to download the game you'd want after purchasing it. From where the hell u got all the ideas!!
Man u r the best
Is it still possible to transfer games to one?
@Laserdisc If this means international N64 games can be used on it, then from what I hear, the leaked Dinosaur Planet prototype would be the ultimate test of its SoC's accuracy. That game is allegedly just about impossible to run on an emulator!
That soc could definitely fit in a mini N64 shell. Nintendo should use this to make the N64 classic
I’m pretty sure that’s illegal
Well the thing is that wat would be Pia to make
I played my N64 without a heatsink for years and hours of gameplay and it was totally fine. I actually lost the heat sink because I was working on it for a while and after I used it for a whole 3 years without it I chopped up an existing heat sink and used it on the N64 just in case!
The RF shield alone provided a fair amount of surface area, with the heatsink piece acting as a bit of an extension to it.
@@nitrax8629 Yeah I had the RF shield on because I was paranoid! What ended up happening was when I touched the chips while in oot after about an hour or 2 in the fire temple, they were warm not hot to the touch so I didn't worry about it because I wasn't gonna play n64 for more than 3 hours. I left it on overnight to see the result and it was still not hot. The shielding was warm. Overall I think the n64 doesn't really need the heatsink unless you are overclocking!

That homemade tool is great for taking out the top to get into the chip. Worked for the ps3 and it worked again on this.
I had no idea this existed and it's so fascinating.
If you ever do a techwave on the evercade it'll be interesting to see how you get it open because I don't see any screws on my evercade. Maybe it is using clips?
I did not know about the higher RAM or clock speed. That's very interesting
It was a speedruning machine for OOT cuz it gave a 1min advaintige but since one glitch bricks iQue Player and so the system has been phased out
Very cool! Didn't even know iQue was a thing.
I'm actually jealous of this. I'm sure that someone could modify it to play N64 games directly and remove the obsolete kiosk port. This controller kind of reminds me of the modern "Brawler" third party N64 controller. I have heard of this console device a few times in the past and I had assumed it was a typical Chinese knockoff with Super Mario Bros and a bunch of other Nes games on it. This was incredible to hear that it was an official Nintendo product that was a miniature N64.
Yes, that "SoC" means system-on-chip in that line. Also, this was released before the console-ban in China (there was official PlayStation 2 in China as well). iQue (the company) was able to release DS and 3DS in China during the console ban for some reason though, but they are just modified DS/3DS systems, not like iQue. There were multiple accessories released for iQue as well, one of being the "controller-only" version of this controller-console hybrid designed for local multiplayer, and a box for four -player multiplayer capability.
I thought the iQue existed because of the console ban, and that the fact that the whole system existed within the controller circumvented said ban, as it would be classified as a portable rather than a home console
and also the iQue was released after the ban in 2003 (the ban started in 2000). Sony on the other hand tried to position the ps2 as a "computer entertainment system" and planned to release the ps2 in 2003, China quickly responded by banning sales and advertising. Eventually in 2004 the ps2 did see a release in china however only 10 games ever got released during it's lifespan. The history of video games in China is indeed very interesting. South Korea also has a pretty interesting ban on Japanese game consoles where Samsung & Hyundai would release versions of Sega & Nintendo consoles. And the of course you have the Dendy in Russia (another Famiclone)
Video starts: Oooh a mini N64. What late edition release could this be?
**SpawnWave holds up the iQue.**
Oh well. I'll watch anyway just because I like the dude.
I played golden eye again with a few friends the other day. Most fun I've had playing a game in a hot minute. Proximity mines make the multiplayer matches both funny and extremely frustrating lol
What does that have to do with the ique player
Reminds me of those n64 controllers that were in hotel rooms back in the day. Probably the same idea.
How did you get your hands on one of these?! They are freaking expensive now! I wish I would have bought one when I heard of it back in 2010.
I remember the whole project reality with Silicon graphics, the fish and the train demo...everything. Anyone else?
I don't remember those. But I do remember wave race 64 being a weird mix of F-Zero meets racing on Venice Italy. It was totally different to the jetski game that was finally released.
The Chinese will never know the struggle of blowing dust off the cartridge
Nah they have famiclones
Tbh u could get the same effect after leaving from a Kiosk
Speedrunners actually use this system, because the Chinese text is very compact due to every symbol being a word.
Not anymore cuz some glitches crash the system so iQue has become slower
Nice and compact, easy to hide behind the TV when Red Guards come knocking on your door.
I was wondering which N64 was the smallest ever. Thank you.

I am surprised it wasn't hacked yet, but I guess that is only because not many people have one or know about it. I certainly haven't heard of it until now. I am sure it is definitely hackable to run all the games, or most.
I wish a way to upload roms to this thing would be found. It'd be great :)
that was Pretty Rare Smallest N64 I've never seen that before
Very good dude. An awesome teacher.
With all the N64 hardware documentation being found in the iQue leak, proving that Nintendo still has all schematics and whatnot to make another, modern N64 SoC, the chances are pretty high that they'd do it for an N64 Mini. It certainly would help for power usage since the SoC alone should only draw a couple of watts, if not less than a Watt. =P
Disassembling and Reassembling classic tech always stresses me out
I remember this thing! It’s pretty cool!
It's a shame your box is missing the box/manual for Dr Mario. The other games it was possible to get the manuals for them when you bought the games from a kiosk. Sadly the manuals are insanely rare to obtain now a days. :(
I've seen that shirt before at Kohl's, I've got ya figured out.
Would be cool if Nintnendo would somehow get a hold of a bunch of leftover SoC so they could repurpose them to a N64 Mini, but that is very unlikely I guess.
Very interesting video thanks. It would have been great to see you playing the actual console plugged in and connected to a TV. And it appears that a real drawback to this form-factor for modern-day use is lack of multiplayer (I assume).
If this gets hacked, this Controller could be a Portable N64 Makers dream come true!
Looks like a Polycom with colorful buttons.
Hey spawn, just wanted to note: you talked about "hoping someone hacked it" and I just wanted to say, it was hacked back in 2018 :)
You can load normal n64 games on it, with some caveats (either games need patches or you need to use my OS hack which makes most games run just fine). Some games have other issues (OoT doesn't boot because it has issues with how it checks memory, for example)
Love the background color 👌
