The United States just announced that it will claim a vast swath of sea bed that will enlarge its territory by 11%! This is the greatest addition of territory since the purchase of Alaska, but it's barely reported on by mainstream media. Is the U.S. hiding something? Or is it not as it seems?

Perhaps that is why India turned to Socialism and failed to take advantage of globalization like China. And so remained poor.
If you take the gross world product divided by the world population, you considerably less than the yearly income of an American working at Walmart. No, we don't have enough to "satisfy every man's need" (I'm not surprised Gandhi said this. He was honestly kind of an asshole if you look at his life history).

The whole "extension of our continental shelf" nonsense is about as nebulous as you can get. According to whom? "That feature looks like it maybe should have been part of our landmass, even though it's underwater now. Look, it's a ridge just like the ones we have on land!" Seems like a recipe for conflict.
UNCLOS !
It's true this may cause conflict, but it would also cause conflict if various countries fought to set up deepsea mining operations on the same resource deposits...
It could easily turn the middle of the ocean into the south China sea unless the world comes up with some way of apportioning and/or regulating it.
The problem with regulation as opposed to apportionment (as seen in the South China sea) is that regulation requires muscle to back it up (whereas apportioned territory is the problem of only the country it belongs to). As an American, I'm well aware that will result in US policing everyone else's operations in order to stop China from muscling out smaller countries by force, which I really don't want any more than we already have to do it in various country's EEZs.
@@bschneidez happy that the US never muscled out Latin and South American countries - just to name a few
Do you really think the US is making decisions serving the world? Not even for you. Or do you own a mining company?
Didn't russia started that nonsense by putting flag on some shelf in antarctic few years ago?
This may just be part of political warfare between them. So if russia claims part of arctic sea usa will clam part of sea right inder russias border.
We already have conflicts w/Chinese and Russian fishing in Alaskan waters.
We never hear about this kind of stuff, thanks for the information.

@0 m & 32 sec. You state that the United States has the world's largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which is not accurate. The country with the most square miles of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) is France having an EEZ that covers an impressive 4,514,000 square miles, thanks in large part to its numerous overseas territories located around the globe.
The United States holds the 2nd largest Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) globally with 3.5 Million Sq nmi followed by Australia in 3rd. But then again good chance I could be wrong since I Google everything and go to UA-cam for everything that I need to learn how to do.

Ok with this line of thinking, Eritrea, Sudan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Djibouti own the lower part of the Red Sea and should be entitled to Tariffs, While Gibraltar and Morocco must be paid transit fees for that pass, Argentina , Chile, South Africa Australia and New Zealand have rights to Antarctica.
Yeah, it's pretty aggressive.
So, this line of thinking is alive and well all throughout history including today. If those countries want to claim that land they can, they just have to enforce their claims.
You work hard, you make money, you buy things, you don’t steal other countries, their land and wealth.
How is this any different from the nine-dash claim by China in south china sea?
Just look at the 9 dash. This is nothing like it. This mostly conforms with the extension of the already established zones of control, notice they talked about the treaty with Russia being the limit? If the US did anything like a 9 dash line we would just claim the vast majority of the Atlantic and Pacific.
Would you mind explaining why Russia has a "far worse record" in terms of compliance with UNCLOS than the non-signatory US? I've spent much of my adult life concerned with implementation of the provisions of UNCLOS and how they are applied and I can find no such failures/refusals of implementation and/or compliance by Russia with the Treaty. As for China, I strongly suggest that the actions of Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan, both Koreas, China and Indonesia are as equally engaged in stretching the provisions of UNCLOS for their own respective benefit(s) and for you to name and target China is quite a stretch.
Why are the USA still not signing? Reagan's objections have been dealt with.
As in all laws in dispute, you go to the underlying foundations of said law . In this case territorial is foundational & the fact that all laws are ratified , is the requirement for any extraordinary benefits.
Now we gotta fight over the ocean floor...

China does something similar in the South china Sea, and the US screams
You mean US is building artificial islands?
The Chinese are essentially claiming an EEZ that was never theirs. Anyways, the US backing the ASEAN states involved is a good idea. The Chinese Commies can scream all they want, but a multinational backing for the ASEAN states involved is not only for the US's advantage but to global trade in general.
What the CCP is doing in the SCS goes against UNCLOS and all of the ASEAN nations are in agreement against China.
What the US is claiming does not go against the UNCLOS and EEZ convention. China is claiming EEZ and territorial waters that is 1000 km from their land.
China claims territories of it's neighbors. Not quite same now, is it?
Greed, greed of the hypocrites.

11:10 Russia is not in violation of anything. The treaty says that the maritime boundary extends north along the 168° 58' 37" W meridian through the Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea into the Arctic Ocean, *as far as permitted under international law*.
So, "international law", meaning the line ends in at the EEZ. You extended the line as far as the new Extended Continental Shelf claim. Very sneaky lie

Was this reported on April Fool's Day? Good reason why not to believe it!
This video fails to explain why the US is making these claims on maritime territories. Did they find petrol? Is it something else?
The explanation as to why this is not reported in the general media is not convincing. The majority of mainstream news is not interesting to most people. Who could sincerely say they are not fed up of hearing about conflicts in the Middle East? So this would come as an interesting change of topic. If they aren't reporting it it might be for a good reasons. Maybe because if it's about oil, the US government doesn't want to be accused of seeking even more oilfields in the context of global warming. All they don't want to draw the attention to the fact that the US is the only developed or democratic country that didn't sign the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Personally, I think the treaty is only as good as the countries that follow it. China signed them but she don't seem to follow what she signed and nothing is done against China. So what is the point.
@@cck4863 Countries that break the treaty can be sued in international courts. That can take time, but past infractions could still have consequences.
@@julienb.9526
What consequences? Beside making it a laughing joke, what did anyone do anything to China. Comically, it is the US that try to enforce the same law in South China Sea. Like the Paris Agreement, almost all the developing countries don't meet the target, even some of the western countries can't meet it.
Ironically, China and Russia did sign UNCLOS but refuse to follow it. The US did not sign, but still follow UNCLOS.
@@julienb.9526the Philippines took China to international court in the Hague and won it's UNCLOS case in 2016. Yet, China a signer of UNCLOS is claiming all of the SCS as territorial waters. All of the ASEAN wants the CCP to abide by UNCLOS, but Xi refuses to do so.
You lost me at the claim the United Nations is the most important treaty in history. Uh huh.
Why wouldn’t the UN treaty be the most important treaty? It does involve nearly all nations.
@@klardfarkus3891The U.N is a corrupt organization. And it’s time it gets booted from NYC, Let the other Nations pick up the tab. Also telling the USA what it can do in its own Waters? 😅

why are you talking like you are smirking and laughing?
Don't get into a border dispute with Canada. They have partnered with the United States on so many military missions, and they are a dependable border nation. China is doing nat8ion-spreading beyond reason, and these mega projects they are doing in foreign countries, like building harbors for African countries with skyscrapers for people to buy or rent and live in, but the locals can't afford them so they are being filled up with Chinese nationals, and if they default on payments to China for the harbor, China can take it over. There are enough places in the world that if there was a World War with China, they would have ports across the globe. China has over a billion people, so their nation-spreading isn't such a shock, but the United States isn't China. We are tying to help the countries that China is trying to infringe upon in the South China Sea, so can we really do the same to Canada? The Atlantic and Pacific where there are no nations in the way, that's one thing, particularly when we have islands out that way, but don't mess with our friends in Canada and Mexico. That's B.S.
Also we are slow to fix territorial disputes. It took fifty years to end a dispute with Denmark about the Hans island. For so much space our diplomate will argue around for few centuries.

Now let’s talk about the major polluting countries of China, India, Brazil, and nations in Africa, etc that will not reduce emissions. The U.S. and EU even if emissions dropped significantly would have no noticeable effect due to these super emitters.
We should use Emissions per capita, not just emissions.
If we do use emissions per capita then west would have higher numbers compared to India/China/Africa.
@gund89123 that is a silly metric to use because total output will not discriminate on who gets affected. This is not some GDP per capita shenanigans.
