  • ... approximately.
I revisit an area I rode a few months ago looking for a route to a lake view I couldn't get to because of snow. I still don't get there ... but, I learn a lesson about using an app with outdated maps, get a lot of training on how to cross cross ditches on a dual sport bike and realize that soft dirt may be comfy for sleeping on but doesn't give good traction.

The challenge for BRMB is that they rely solely on government data for their road map. However, the government data just tells you a road was maybe there at some point. If you're lucky the data tells you when they built the road. It doesn't tell you anything else. It doesn't tell you the last time they graded it. It doesn't tell you if they pulled the bridge/culverts. It doesn't tell you if they only temporarily deactivated the road or if they permanently deactivated it. Nothing. It's impossible for BRMB staff to go out and survey every road in the Province. It would be too costly and conditions change too frequently so it would be out of date anyways. So BRMB just shows you every road ever built.
Until the Province gets it's act together and overhauls the forestry IT infrastructure and forces BC Hydro to publish their road data, it will remain a problem. Doesn't even matter if you switch to OnX, Gaia, or AllTrails as they suffer from similar issues related to freshness of the data.

      Interesting info, thanks!
I have found Gaia to be a bit more reliable but not great for planning because while the track info seems more up to date (because it's crowd sourced ...?) it doesn't readily identify what kind of track it is - FSR, Hydro access, hiking or ORV. For me personally, I find BRMB easier to read on the phone without having to dig out my glasses and that's what got me started on it.
I'm not going to complain too much though because the reason I'm out doing what I'm doing is that I enjoy riding, hiking and exploring to find those scenic gems. Even a ride that's a bit of a fail from a navigational perspective is still a day in the mountains, in the forest and that's always a great day.

I remember some of that! You didn't want to cross over to Chehalis? Must be a record for most ditches ever in a single ride

I've done Chehalis both ways now so it's not really on the menu anymore. There's also a gate at the east end now.

Looks like those people were onto something with their camping in the middle of the road just at the first ditch :)
The 450L is infamous for its flame-outs, good thing you didn't get hurt and managed to get out.

Nah, I've given up on getting hurt. It never worked out for me.

@@M.C.A.T. you didn't try hard enough it seems. Here's how it's done: a drop-off about 1.5m high, a flameout when giving it throttle to lift the front wheel for a flat jump, a nose-dive instead... works like a charm.
