    Very cool. I made a lemon oil tallow mix on the stove, after repeated cleaning of the beef fat, for my leather jacket. The tallow mix lasted a year and a half before souring. My jaxket looks great. I will try some of your products.

    Thanks, Kirby. Do you need to condition the reverse (waist side) of the belt?

    • @TheFishFTW
      @TheFishFTW 3 роки тому +3

      yes you should. Often the belt consists of 2 layers of leather, a colored one and a neutral leather color. There is glue in between and ofcourse they are stitched together from the sides. You should just use a mink oil product to condition the lower layer aswell. You can check the layers very easily by making an extra hole to the belt. You can see the layers from the small piece that comes off or just by looking at the holes.

    Hi Kirby, love your videos. Can you refer to shoe/belt color coordination? how exact do they have to be? Sometimes it is difficult for me to find a belt that is the same color as my shoes.
    Appreciate your advise

    the saphir pommadier works for me too, the other day I gave a brother of mine a "new" black belt by applying the pommadier onto the leather which was gray already, the final result was impressive.

      The Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish can certainly be used... we've used it in some old tutorials. But the Canadian is better for this purpose and doesn't have the same risk of rubbing off on clothing as the Pommadier Cream Polish.

      Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique I hang mine on one of our belt hangers. Belts don’t roll well - generally they are too stiff. Better and easier to hang.

    Other than the quality of leather and hardware, what separates cheaper belts from quality belts? Is there a difference between a $100 Allen Edmonds belt and leather belt costing $200+? I'm looking to match my Cobbler Union Museum Cognac cap toes and I'm wondering if $180 is worth it.

    Quick question. Just before the instructional portion starts (after you say "today we will be conditioning one of our...") there is a close up of 4 belts. Hello, I have a question, what is the difference between Saphir Medaille d'Or and Saphir Beauté du Cuir products. I see both brands sell some similar items. For example, both have a Pate de Luxe and a crème pommadier. Are this different quality or they are just targeted to different leather products?? Cheers

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 років тому +4

      The Saphir Beauty Cuir (SBC, as I call it, or their standard blue label), is a good polish. It is definitely better than all of other polishes we used in this video. It contains high-quality waxes and uses natural solvents. However, the difference between the SBC and the MDO is in quality, concentration, and variety of waxes, ingredients.
      Saphir Medaille d'Or contains a different and higher concentration of hard and soft waxes, which is why you get an easier, higher shine than in the Beauty Cuir. It also contains a higher concentration and quality of pigments, which produces better recoloring and restoration of the finish.
      And there is a "huge difference" in the waxes you are using in the Saphir Pommadier MDO vs. SBC. The Saphir SBC uses almond oil vs the shea butter in the Medaille d’Or. Combined with the unique combination of the other waxes, the Saphir Medaille d'Or is a much better nourishing polish and produces a higher-quality, longer-lasting shine.
      Lower quantity of beeswax in the Medaille d’Or vs. vegetable saxes, which produce better nourishing. MDO contains carnuba wax (I'm spelling this incorrectly), which is a harder wax that produces a higher shine.
      Tons of differences... is the Saphir Beauty Cuir good? Yes. Is it better than the Saphir Medaille d'Or? No.

    Hi Kirby, I have have been following The Hanger Project UA-cam channel since it started. I personally would never wear a belt on a bespoke trouser, because if you wear a belt the trouser will slide down ever so slightly. If I had to choose, I would stick to suspenders, because they will keep trousers of the same length all day. My question is: Do you think a well-dressed man should invest in a quality belt if they wear a bespoke trouser?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 років тому +4

      Beement No... I honestly haven’t worn a belt with trousers since college. All of my trousers are tabbed. I’m having some cut for braces now.
      These Allen Edmund belts were just for the video.

    Hey Kirby. I have a really old ww2 Sam brown army belt. Its a great sand light brown colour which I don't want to darken. The leather is stiff and it has some dark spots. Can I use the same routine for the thick leather of the army belt? How do I remove the dark (almost black) spots? How do I protect against water marks? Thanks a lot Kirby!

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 років тому +1

      Yes. You could absolutely use this routine. Dark spots are hard to remove... it really depends on what caused the dark spot. If it's an oil stain, there is really nothing you can do to remove it. Best bet is to try to darken the entire leather belt and to blend.

    • @monobgantonina5577
      @monobgantonina5577 6 років тому

      The Hanger Project I think I'll live with them. I prefer to not darken the whole belt. I love the light colour.

    Hello Kirby. I noticed you would preferably use Saphir's mink oil based leather lotion for leather garments over the Saphir Renovateur that you use to condition leather shoes. Is there any significant difference between the two ? Or is Saphir's mink oil also great to condition leather shoes ?

    Dear Mr Allison,
    Most of good belts are multi-layers. Is it necessary to condition a "dark side" of such belt to avoid lack of elasticity?
    I use an Arthur Barker belts from London, all they are 3-layers.

      Why is there a need to use different colour pigment products, such as Saphir Canadian Restorative Cream and Saphir Pommadier Cream Shoe Polish, for large leather goods and leather shoes?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 років тому

      The Saphir Canadian is designed for application on larger leather goods and contains a higher concentration of hard beeswax to prevent the pigment from potentially rubbing off onto clothing. This is a risk if you use shoe polish. It is less permanent.
