- Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 1 (stylised as Gangs of वासेपुर) is a 2012 Indian dark comedy crime film directed by Anurag Kashyap, and written by Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri. It is the first installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur series, centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad, and the underlying power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families from 1941 to the mid-1990s. Part 1 stars an ensemble cast, featuring Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadda, Reema Sen, Piyush Mishra, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vineet Kumar Singh, Pankaj Tripathi, Huma Qureshi, Anurita Jha and Tigmanshu Dhulia.

I'd worry if such movies were included in school syllabus as history lessons or moral studies. As long as we notice the A-rating on their certificates, we should know that these artworks are meant for appreciation by adults, as artworks; not as academic material for children.

When this came out I was in Toronto, Canada with two roommates. One a Canadian, the other Swedish. They are also absolute movie lovers like me, I let them watch this movie Part 1 and Part 2 with me in one night. They say this is one of the most realistic depiction of rural gangs and is upthere with "City of God", the other one compared it to "Sin Nombre"!!! I was so proud 😎...
But honestly, most other Bollywood movies like Race 3, Radhe, Total Dhamaal, Coolie No 1, etc. are so bad it can give you second hand embarrassment for Bollywood. Ugh. And learning Race 3 did ₹300 crore+ and Gangs of Wasseypur barely around ₹30 crores. This makes me still sad even in 2021!😭
