I brake down the magnetron, I put tape on the ends where the beryllium is. The center part is #2 copper. I learned that from the Tin man.

@hisandherscoins every yard is different from what I've experienced. My yard will accept bare bright copper of any thickness or stranded wire so long as it's bright and pink and wire only. Other yards will only except bare bright if the strands of each wire is thicker than 1/16 or a standard wooden pencil lead thickness. So, from my knowledge, your yard is unique in that regard as most people have to cut the ceramic parts off before they accept it as #2 copper. Some people get lucky with what their yards' policy and sorting rules.

I have sold 4 magnetron on ebay for around $30-$40 each. So even if the transform is all aluminum windings, I get way more back through the magnetron. Ofc there is copper in the magnetron too, if you're careful enough to cut it away from the pink of death ceramic material.

I've been curious what people buy them for other than fixing other microwaves
. I save them for ebay too. Gonna list a bunch soon. I've sold at least one for 20 plus shipping.

When scrapping a microwave, be careful of the magnetron. I don't know if the beryllium oxide they used to use is being phased out, but if that ceramic like material is cracked, the dust is highly toxic.
Frankly, I'm surprised scrap yards aren't having them put in a special pile.
I love microwaves for those large magnets.
Also, the transformers aren't always copper wire. It's quite common for me to come across aluminum windings. Sometimes half/half. Scratch the wire and it'll reveal 😉

This is an absolute myth. Microwave oven magnetron have never contained beryllium oxide, the only magnetron that ever used beryllium oxide were high-power radio magnetron for radar and sonar use.

Hello Tom,,,, you have a nice peice of copper in the magnetron and a little brass mesh as well.
Microwaves are one of the best buckets you can get when scrapping,, fill them up with bits and peices and take it in as shred steel.
My yard gives me prepared steel price for nuts and bolts and any clean steel, even that light iron cover on the Microwave.

The magnetron is a resellable complement that sells for 40 to 60 dollars used...also I'm sure you have noticed that some motors and transformers use copper coated aluminum wires in the secondary or coil windings ..I have seen dryer motors and alternators from China are made with aluminum wire NOT copper
