Soma Laboratories Pulsar-23 | Wonderfully Uncomfortable

- The fantasy is always better than the real thing. Or is it? I've been waiting for my Pulsar-23 for months and it arrived yesterday. I had this sound in my head after playing with my Mutable case, but the real thing felt dull, uncomfortable and sonically cramped at first patch. The 23 is nothing like a conventional drum machine and shouldn't be treated as such. Then it came to life :). Also features the Lyra-8 synthesizer.
Maybe the best review video I've ever seen. Wow!
Well, it wasn't intended as a review or demo, just me doing my first baby steps in unknown territory, showcasing my ignorance. It can't all be bliss :).
@@CinematicLaboratory Works for me, anyway :)
Fantastic. You never fail to inspire me!
Wow, thanks for the compliment. More exploration coming soon!
Got mine last week. Def a lot to dive into. I agree on the mono mix being a big constraint.
I'll be receiving six 6,5 to 3,5 inch jack cables this week to patch it into the modular system :). Can't wait to give it a try.
🔥
@Cinematic Laboratory Have you had more of a play with the Pulsar? is it a keeper?
Unfortunately I do not have space to have it in a permanent setup (It's under the bed) and I also did not have enough time to explore it. Regardless, I bought this because I already knew it would be a keeper next to the Lyra-8. Also pre-ordered Enner. I am planning to revisit the Pulsar-23 in January.
The work you did with the Mutable stuff was impressive. That said, I had the opposite feeling upon first play with the P-23. I was amazed at how far I went without fully wrapping my head around the patching possibilities. Perhaps it is, as you imply, more about expectations.
I don't know how it works for other people, but I always get these ideas in my head of the sound I am looking for. I know my way around the modular pretty well, but with the 23 it was back to square one. I hope a first impression video like this one will help people to get an idea of what can happen at first patch, but also how you can develop your patches over time. So this video really needs a 'pulsar-23 two months later' episode. I'll definitely revisit this wonderful machine on video!
@@CinematicLaboratory и так, прошло 2 месяца )
@@ilyacosmonaut Я знаю, моя повестка дня дала сигнал. Я должен вернуться к этому. Спасибо!
@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks for the review. The Lyra 8 has led me to my interest on the pulsar 23, and I’m pretty excited. However, i am definitely going to start slow and with low expectations before I go steady with her. Im looking forward to further videos. I do feel that the Lyra 8 and pulsar 23 have a special attraction different from other instruments.
Huge fan of this channel.
Wich eurorack module would you recomend me for Panning automated motion to achieve similar stuff as the Brauer Motion Plug in ?
I don't think there's a module like that but maybe someone else has a tip. If I had to approach the dual panner with filtering (for a sense of distance), I'd pick an X-PAN (or similar) for panning and Worng Soundstage for near/far placement in the stereo field. And maybe some reverb on the rear channel.
That sounded bad ass bro
wow that was super cool!!!
Sounds great. I use mine with the seperate outs and have the two effects as a stereo mix on two outputs
Thanks! I want to try that too. I'll be getting extra cables to connect all outs to the WMD performance mixer or cosmix. And I have to read the manual front to back and watch all Vlad Kreimer videos again :).
I’d be very interested to hear what you think about it after a month or two.
Love the new logo btw, less busy than the multiple icons.
@@medenine4828 I am puzzled. I haven't changed my logo since 2020 :)
You're on. I'll definitely want to revisit the 23. I've put it in my schedule. But hopefully I was aware of what i got into. I also had this dip with Lyra-8 and I actually put it on sale a year ago. But I am super grateful I kept it. I bet there will be a dip with 23 too because it's just too special (weird) to become part of a daily workflow. But for now, there's so much undiscovered territory to explore. I also have this Error Instruments Cloud Busting which also uses alligator clips for its CV sources and I want to explore iron wire (voodoo) patching too. I also expect it's easy to find a new owner when it turns out it's not for me. We'll see!
@@CinematicLaboratory i actually got the Lyra-8 , 6 months ago - and only once or twice did i "Play" ..."with" it ! until last week - i ran it through a Specular Tempus - and the "Julia" chorus - .. And and old guitarsynth pedal i had lin a drawer - SY-300 BOSS guitarsynth - It TOTALLY opened up for me - - that Lyra is an A L I E N device !!! ;-) with a SEROIUS life of its own - ...i can litterally get it to FM, with the power of my mind and feelings .... i never believed in all that woo - but , now i know it exist´s ! I Believe ! In what, i have no clue , but my faith is strong,- Its a hoe hop world !
@@CinematicLaboratory The Mandela Effect :-O
Great video!
Thanks! I've been experimenting some more, this time with the six outputs. This first video is more like scratching the surface of the box Pulsar-23 came in. There's definitely a part 2 coming, but it takes some time to figure out all 23 'modules'.
@@CinematicLaboratory Looking forward! ;)
You don't seem to be very impressed by your Pulsar and that's totally fine. It's the same with me, but the more time I spend with this drum machine, the more I love it. Pulsar even inspired me to start working on another album. Just give it some time and don't sell it for a couple of months, I think you'll become best friends
It's not Pulsar-23, It's me that needs work. I need to learn it. Thank you for sharing and I just subscribed to your channel. Good to meet you!
oooh ‼️ this... 🎶❤️
Something is Something !
Oooooo i enjoyed that
WOW!!
good thinking out of the box...in the box ....cutter....9-11 afgan box cut-up´s ,- see !? clever cookie cutter ,- - i never really cared much for U2 ....
i like the sounds ...and the rythms....
I am not sure I understand everything you write here, but I definitely appreciate that you checked out the video!
@@CinematicLaboratory Neither am i ...sure..... but i believe again ! In what, i have no clue ...but my faith is strong !
I had , the exact same feeling , when i FINALLY - got my Lyra-8 .... I really kicked myself , for having bourgt into a onetrick pony tail....of a pibe dream,-
and there it stood , for months - and ..then , a couple of weeks ago - i drove the Lyra trough a "Julia" chorus , a "Specular Tempus" Delay and Verb pedal in a and it EXPLODED of Godly Soundscapes - and its been in use , nearly every day since ! Now im working with a Looper pedal and a Harmonizer/whammy pedal in the chain - and this Russian Box of Strange deligh´st , has begun talking back at me ! Wonderfully Weird - it picks up on strange vibes , like feelings, it can be in a good mood , or ready to go to WAR - its a trip - and utterly completely alien !
I want to love this synth, I really do, but I just can't. Lets be honest, this synth plays 95% of the producers, and not the producers the instruments. This is just sonic masturbation, nothing else. And not a precise and consistent music/sound production.
Thats exactly what this is about - i want to play with weird contraptions and be surprised what happens. Not interested in consistent music production at all. I never touched a DAW.
