  • Despite the releases of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem: Engage, are Nintendo and Intelligent Systems really done with Switch? This video will look at the rumours of a new Fire Emblem title and will deep-dive the credits to see if there's any evidence of who could be shepherding this title.

Three houses developers were heaily inspired during the production by genealogy of the holy war. It would make a lot of sense if those developers who made themmos successful fire emblem ever, based on the crewtive inspiration of fe4, then moved on to just properly remake fe4. Moving from big success to potential big success.

One thing you didn't mention was that FE Engage had a datamined codename of FE19 or something like that and Three Houses was FE17, so a FE game is missing somewhere (and no, the Warriors games aren't in this datamined set, so Three Hopes couldn't have been the missing one).
Also, Intelligent Systems is doing Thousand Year Door, so......probably no FE game this year.

Three Houses is FE16 and Engage is FE17. Also, the FE4 remake has been said it's done for years now. Intelligent Systems is probably one of the most capable development software companies there are. They had so much downtime during covid they worked on FE4 the entire time. Engage was suppose to release in 2020 as the 30th Anniversary game. That's the only reason why you are able to use characters from past games, its a celebration of the series.

I absolutely love Fire Emblem games! While I liked Engage enough: the concept of pairing with past characters was cool and the art style was vibrant, but I miss the more complex story-driven Three Houses direction! If they could marry the combat and art of Engage with a Three Houses-like story, it’s a match made in heaven for me!

As someone who has played Fire Emblem 4 on Super Famicom, this isn't a game that I expect them to remake on Switch 1 actually for a few key reasons.
The first is actually hardware limitations, which sounds weird, but one of the things that makes Genealogy of the Holy War stand out, is the sheer size and scale of it's individual maps. A typical "large" Fire Emblem map might be 16x16 squares, whereas all of the maps in FE4 except for the tutorial which is half the size of the rest, are 64x64 a x16 increase in size. Each chapter/map in the game has you field your entire army rather than a squad of 10-15 like most 3D FE games (and that number has only gone down for Engage and 3H), there are so many enemies on the map that they move in formations rather than one at a time. The maps all have multiple objectives that can be completed in any order, tons of story events and side objectives/tasks, it's kind of like an "open world" strategy game of sorts. In order for this to work in 3D, you'd have to make it look very low poly and ugly, worse than FE3H, to make it run well enough for it not to chug.
I do think remaking it makes a ton of sense for Switch 2 because of the aforementioned hardware issue, but also to course correct after Engage underperformed greatly in terms of sales and critical/fan reception compared to the massive 4+ million selling FE3H. FE4 is far more in line with 3H in terms of tone, except it's a more darker story with many adult themes and subject matter in it's plot making a very faithful remake of it being as close as you could get tonally to doing a 180 from Engage and back towards 3H. I do think Engage did poorly because of it's character designs and more fun/poppy tone compared to the other games in the series. I didn't dislike Engage, I think it has great gameplay but it doesn't have that hook that 3H had with multiple paths, the politics, etc, all things that the director of 3H has said came from FE4 as an inspiration.
Two of the things that would prevent IntSys from remaking it are: The original is on NSO already, very simple, and 2, Nintendo might not want a game where things like siblings engaging in "adult activities of questionable consent" happen as a part of the core plot and are so central to the main plot they can't really be removed or changed. That being said, I do think a remake of it is a great idea and instead of changing it to make it more family friendly or more in-line with other games in the series, they should actually double down on what makes it so different and just embrace getting an inevitable M rating. The audience for Fire Emblem is far older than pretty much every Nintendo series and aside from maybe Metroid or Xenoblade would be more than accepting of the series taking a chance of a more "grown up" take.

Great take - persuasive on all fronts. Thanks for posting!

    • @thefreshvince879
      @thefreshvince879 Місяць тому

The Switch sucks ass. It's 100% possible to do, but like you said it would end up looking worse than 3H.
Going with an older established story, thats more mature and dark would actually help them more than hurt. Engage was a functionally impressive and fantastic entry to the series. I'm disappointed that the characters are so annoying and the story and world is horrible. 3H was a loveletter to FE4.
They aren't going to translate a random game in the series and bring it out of Japan just because it's the next one that hasn't been released in the west.
Going off their track record, they are just going to completely remake the game and improve on it in every way. Nobody saw Echoes happening, it came out of nowhere and was a great suprise, especially it was releasing later on that year.
Your excuse of adult consent and siblings are immedately invalid based on how you can LITERALLY marry your siblings in fates and have kids with them. That's a way more recent game where they love to promote the characters...so the logic is out the window.
of course the audience is older, the game is about war and murdering your enemies with deadly weapons and magic for politics, usually. it shouldn't be a E rated game. The only thing keeping fire emblem from being M rated is the lack of blood and strong violence, because we all know the sexual themes are there.

  • @agromchung
    @agromchung 2 місяці тому +12

Oh hey, FE content! I was one of the translators on the New Mystery of the Emblem fan translation project back in the day, so I'm old hat now.
Like any longstanding series with newfound success (see also: Zelda, Persona, etc.) the newer games have brought in new waves of fans. I think you can broadly split the fandom into 3 circles in a Venn diagram, which would be like:
    1. Old School: Pre-Awakening fans who dislike everything from Awakening and beyond. They love the politics-centric stories of Path of Radiance, archetypal character builds, and wonky game balance. Active in speedrunning and ROMhacking communities. Generally dislikes the revival era but most likely to enjoy Engage for its gameplay.
    2. 3DS Era: These people jumped on at Awakening. They like the lighthearted tone, the waifu mechanics, the anime stuff, and are generally less concerned about gameplay mechanics.
    3. 3H Fans: Jumped on at Three Houses. They like the life sim, the voice acting, the grey morality, the lore. Hate Engage for its weak characters and even weaker story.
I've loved pretty much every title for their strengths and I'm willing to overlook the flaws because I love the series so much. I love Three Houses for its life simulation, the transcendent English dub, the FEELING of hanging out with a bunch of high schoolers, but its maps and class/character balancing are horrid. I love Engage's deep customisation options and the map design is PEAK. It has some of the most memorable character designs and visual flair. But, my god, the story is hot anime garbage and it knows it.

Also speaking from personal experience, the gba games are as far back as I’m willing to go, the first 5 games are so awful to play by todays standards, I’m just waiting for 4 and 5 to be remade like 1,3 and 2.

This is probably to be taken with a huge grain of salt, but I think I remember a rumor a few years ago that a FE4 remake developed fully by IS was supposed to come out on the 3ds, but the project was presumably moved away from that system when Nintendo stopped publishing games for it. It would fit with the fact that there is a gap in the internal codenames with Engage and if we assume that Engage was supposed to be an aniversery game it makes sense that it would have been prioritised, but then the pandemic happened and Engage was not done in time and following that they presumably thought it would make more sense to release Three Hopes first, which could have meant that they held on to a completed games for quite a while (as rumors suggest). This could of course have given them plenty of time to finish the FE4 remake.

I sincerely hope that the three houses director is on the next game. Engage has very good gameplay but for people invested in fire emblem's stories it seems to have been largely seen as a letdown (not by everyone obviously but by a lot.) Not quite as broad but still also brought up is the game's very "genshin impact" art style that's been criticized as well. I think the series would benefit a lot more from more games like three houses that are willing to take risks on their stories

Hello grate video but I think some information could be useful and maybe you said it but I don't remember if you mentioned this information but i left ir here if isn't. Engage was a game that was already finished in 2020 (you can confirm this if you check the date in the data of the game) (a year after 3 Houses) and according to rumors that leek Engege (the ones with screenshot) originally said was suppouse to launch for the 30 anniversary for the series but because of COVID they delay indefinitely, they also said that the studio Gust help with Engage but they not appers in the credits but the rest of the rumor was true. Also in the Data of Engage indicates that another title exists, because of the codenames, each main game in the series Engage was 19, Three Houses was 17 , so 18 is left (spin off like The Warriors games are nor concider in the codename so no TMS or Three Hopes).

I remember in early 2020, there was supposedly a Fire Emblem Expo for 2 days in Japan, starting at May 5th. What stood out was the character voice of Ike, Michihiko Hagi attended both days. Furthermore, the Telius saga (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) are the only few games who are yet to be on any virtual consoles, with the only other being Binding Blade. Last but also equally noteworthy then, someone in Nintendo America made a post about Ike, and there's a "typo" in which he is the MC of "Fire Emblem Echoes: Path of Radiance".
I pretty much remember this from FE youtuber Mangs. His video is titled "The Next Fire Emblem Remake".
For my own experience, I love Three Houses, Sacred Stones, and Path of Radiance. I will most likely avoid or at least play Engage way later, mainly because of the art direction. Yes, it is colorful but in a greyed out manner. The colours are barely contrasting to one another making me need to squint at the gameplay graphics. I have no problem with the characters though, since I know very well silly FE characters have existed since FE3 with Marisha. I do, however, certainly hope we can have proper MC instead of "avatar units" for a brand new title.

The overall conclusion the community has about the last couple games is that Engage has amazing gameplay, but the characters are mediocre (or outright bad if you don't go out of the way to know them) and the story is very bland. The Art in particular has been very polarizing, some people hate it, some people have gotten used to it, and as time passed I've also seen support for it.
Three Houses on the other hand, has great characters and art, a potentially good story (the more you think about it the less it holds up, and even without thinking about it there's some scope creep with some factions not being all that important), but the gameplay is kinda mid especially when factoring the long and repetitive Monastery tasks that can and will wear you down over the course of a route even if you are technically not required to use the Monastery at all.
Pretty much the unspoken consensus is that the greatest Fire Emblem of all time lies somewhere between Engage and 3Hs, and given that Engage was purposefully designed to be a "anti-3Hs" game with opposing priorities... well, we are in for a treat next time as long as they have good writing.
(I for one am not as hopeful because Fire Emblem Heores has made my faith on IS negative, and a few elements Engage and 3Hs do share like an Avatar character and way too much customization are big no nos for me, but are unlikely to go away)

Thanks for covering this topic! You might not be aware, but Engage and 3H were developed concurrently, with the specific intent of being as different as possible. 3H was the “classic” game, and Engage was trying a newer tone and approach. Engage had 6 to 7 years of dev time, with the last couple being for polish.
And since you were so brave as to ask for FE fans’ opinions, Engage is pretty well hated and only has a small, vocal section of fans. 3 Houses is the most popular game in the series, though Path of Radiance on the gamecube is generally agreed upon to be the best game.

I disagree that the logic is there for Fire Emblem remakes based on IS' past releases. Remakes typically sell far less than the mainline games, and they take notice of that as well. Shadow Dragon and Mystery sold very badly, and as good as Echoes: Shadow of Valentia was, it didn't sell well either. That is a huge demotivator for discontinuing Fire Emblem remakes, especially since the SNES period are controversial titles that frankly don't appeal to the modern Fire Emblem community anymore. For every fervent supporter of these games, you'll find 100 more than would hate these games without major reworks. That doesn't spell good for sales.
On top of this, we just didn't see the same engine reuse on Switch that we saw on the 3DS. WIth so many studios being involved, it was probably more difficult to produce cheaper remakes compared to the 3DS.
I would actually expect there to be a new Fire Emblem game on Switch 2 instead. And they will need yet another engine or major upgrade for that game too because it's almost certainly a Switch 2 title.
And don't get me wrong, i actually would love more fire emblem games. I can play and replay these games endlessly. But I just don't see the logic for remakes being there anymore.

In 3H every unit defaults to a player phase bot, be it with CAs or Gambits. The variations on these builds is borderline cosmetic, with clear better options, with no reasons to fall back on them nor a reason to favor on over the other. In a nutshell: brave CA go brrrr.
The part that makes the game an absolute strategic travesty is that taking combat in enemy phase is either a suicide, with close to zero gain for baiting enemies OR absolutely broken stacking absurd abilities or rigged defense gains to end with a character immune to death that wins every map by waiting a lot.
And goes without saying, weapon rank building is objectively bad in this game because they took a perfectly decent progression system and artificially stretched of thin to accommodate a boring tutoring system that rewards grinding to an ungodly degree.
While Engage's systems are not my favorite, at the very least they're fun to use, immediately useable and every map tries (though mostly fails, magic is op) at giving reasons to use different unit classes

@@SinNun-tx5jp Literally everything you said is incorrect or a gross over exaggeration, Every unit is viable on every map and actually feel like they matter and there's plenty of reasons to experiment and customize them, and the combat is really fun and to try to say that it's bad is a straight up lie
