How to NOT catch a Marlin. Waianae, Oahu, Hawaii

Thanks for sharing! Did you switch to the lower gear on your reel? I can't tell you how many fish I've lost using the low gear on a two speed reel. I think the retrieve is so slow that the fish can easily swim forward and do head shakes working the lure loose even though the line feels somewhat tight. For that reason I've stopped using it. Thank you for sharing your experience. Oh yeah, nice boat set up! Aloha!

Braddah, I did! Awww Man! Maybe that's it. I usually don't use the low gear and just pump the line into the reel. Big Mahalos!!!

Hooks were probably just around the bill and they slid off. We get that a lot with our Striped Marlin here in NZ.

Look into putting Red or Yellow electrical tape on the bend and up the shank of your hooks. Two reasons: lets you see where the fish is hooked if/when it jumps and for when it gets close to the boat for leadering/tracing the fish and if you hook a Marlin and it managrs to get free ( bugga) you can see if the tape is all scuffed up showing you it was just hooked around the bill.
