- Townsend, Tennessee is a great little town to visit with many things going on, including this "Old Timer's" Festival. Blue Grass music on stage and in every corner of the property of the welcome center.2014
When a man carries his own stage, he’s fixin’ to show up and show out!!!
That was like bringing cardboard back in the day for a break dancing battle LOL
@@chrisshields5448 🤣🤣🤣🤣...... it really was..... fat piece a cardboard...... a boombox and some Fat laced Adidas
You had me at fixin’ LOL
And he did! 😄
To be in that kind of shape at that age!
I went on vacation in Tennessee in 2015 we stayed in Townsend Tennessee what wonderful people and also state 😎👍👍
Absolutely love this. Can’t watch this without a smile. 😃 love it 🥰
Hi from Australia. Absolutely love this!
As a Scot I love this. Good wholesome fun.
Scotland is where a ton of our music came from.
Thanks for it, and thanks for the fighting spirit. We're going to call on that in the days to come.
@@kathyleicester7306 Madam I wish you well in your future struggles, my heart is with all true Americans. May I add never ever forget where you came from, they are the roots of your land. May you live long and well. SLAINTE

Six year old clip and I just seen it today, 07.22.2020
I gotta say it made me smile ear to ear!
It was sweet and the Appalachia CLOGER tapped those feet like magic!
Never seen this video b4 but I truly enjoyed it much respect to all of these people they sure got down wow
That old timer is serious and good dancer!!! Wished I could do it..
Love music and specially bluegrass...
Makes me want to move to Tennessee ! You don't see this kind of friends , people gathering doing a dance like this here in Kansas...
BYOB - bring your own board.
The guy with the board is good but he is doing the cord version of the dance. Guy in blue who took off his shirt is really good. Doing the finger picking version of the dance. Wish I could do either.
kids dancing with mum & dad, fantastic I love it.hope to make over some day & watch.xxxx
AMERICAN. LET. BRING. BACK. ENJOYMENT. FOR. OURS. SOULS
Culture is a beautiful thing.
Watching from Uganda 🇺🇬.
This year was my first year to this I had a blast will be back next year with my dancing shoes
I'm in tears! So beautiful to see!
All of the dancers are great but the young man who took off his shirt should win the blue ribbon for sure. My Daddy, back in the l940's thru the l970's would get up when just the right music was on the radio and he'd start "The Old fashion Hoe Down" dancing. , very much like the young guy in this video. He used his arms, his entire body was into the found and he would stomp the floor so hard we were afraid he'd end up falling right threw the floor. I haven't seen anyone who could even compete with my dear old dad at the Hoe Down. I really enjoyed watching these guys... brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. I hope Dad is still dancing in Heaven.
He gave up. Quitters aren't winners.
Technically the old guy with his own board is doing traditional buck dancing. The others are clogging and flatfootin'. Most are doing just the basic step. It takes alot of energy. The steps and style of dance is to put the ficus and energy into the feet and legs while the arms are still and typically held close to the body, not flinging arms around.
Dancing on a board or a low wooden platform comes straight from Irish & Scottish traditional dances. Scottish and Irish people who settled heavily through the Appalachian mountains retained their music and dances. And the style retained the traditional rhythm and original steps.
The young dude couldn't last because he's moving his upper body too much ... so much he's wrecking his ability to keep the pace and balance and timing of the lower body. The steps naturally lent to minimal upper body movement. The fast taps and footwork and legwork takes so much energy, focus and precision that you need to keep your arms under control. And large upper body movement actually throws off the rythm, balance and timing the lower body.
That's why he keeps losing his rythem and balance.
Let the legs do the work. The arms only move slightly.
Appalachian flatfootin', clogging, and buck dancing come from Irish and English dances were done on a flat board outside or on a wooden platform the constructed outside. Or inside on a wooden floor.
And the point is to make the clapping/clogging sound with heel and toe taps just loud enough to hear them and still hear the music.
Kaleido Scope Awesome information. I'm from an Irish background and I LOVE this type of clog foot dancing. It literally brings tears to my eyes. So I will reread your info.
superbe!!! bravo! et merci!
This is just fantastic!
That's the heart of America!
God bless y'all!
They are people proud of themselves and their wonderful culture
Such nice old days were wonderful
That's cool!
I do surely hope that the children will learn this dance. This is heritage.
The guy in yellow is straight up gansta!
You think he’s good here.....look up Grandpa move that dope.
That old guy is old on looks but young man in heart and soul, he is killing any sickness coming like arthritis etc
Damn, those blokes rock it! 👏🏼👍🏼🇦🇺
Superb footwork and playing👍 from Suffolk England 💙
I'm Mexican. And I strongly believe I can dance this.
Similar to many Mexican folk dances.
Then git after it.
I just LOVE this! Speaks to me down to my core. And that big fella in the green shirt can move! Gives me hope a thick fella like me can still learn to do this. I used to be an athlete but these guys got some serious cardio! I hope this part of our culture never dies.
THIS is why I go on “vacation” in Appalachia. Everyone participates, even if you’re 300lbs with arthritis. Or feet tapping from a wheelchair. Pick up what little work I can find, car sleep, tent squat, dumpster dive, whatever!
Your're a gem.. I hope you know that...
They look like they are enjoying themselves, clean fun....
I'm in the UK and I SO love this. Go people 👍
These are your people. These folks are from Appalachia, which is comprised of Irish, Scot and Scots Irish descendants.
Cheers for this info Roger.....only wish I could dance like that myself!! 😊
genial.....danzar es tan lleno de vida...........al alma se divirte

I'm most impressed by the gentleman in the dark green shirt, he looked impressively light on his feet.
Oh my God that older gentleman who brought his own board had not down all the young folks and said get out of the way I'm coming in
The old dude with his own board showed them how it's done

Can't nobody do it like the old man. Those youngins couldn't keep up like him. Lol
Zassss zassss..love you grandpa..abuelito 😘
I could see the man with the board been told to walk the plank and him just jigging down the plank 🇺🇸🎶
For all those people saying these people are out of shape, I beg to differ, round IS a shape.
Who said they were out of shape?
This is great, even sounds better with dancers.
Great he's still a dancing been a long time since I saw him last .WOW
RIP to the board dancer, Paul Bordon Dwight Shelnutt. He passed on October 24, 1921.

Col Sanders was cuttin a sweet rug!
That's Colonel Sanders JR to you sir. :)
This reminds me that with the exception of my dad's father's family (who were all the way in Indiana until the late 1890s after arriving in NC by 1750, ha!) pretty much rest of the lot of my ancestors had arrived in central to east and central to southern Kentucky (principly Perry, Jackson, Owsley, Pulaski, Rockcastle and Madison counties) from the British Isles, before The War of 1812, gathered here by Revolutionary War service land grants, after that original influx of former English colonists and Germans who volunteered to aid our cause in exchange for land, not many others except escaped and freed slaves came into those often unforgiving hollers until the early 20th Century Coal Barons bought the "mineral rights" to the wealth they knew lay below ground and, as one miner put it, miners and their families came from all over the world. He describes the superior schools in his coal camp town, where teachers often had student(d thlat spoke up to 30 languages. protected in these here hills. Add some Affrilachian neibors with their banjos, guitars and pickin' style a master African American picker's style Mother Maybelle made famous as the "Carter Scratch" and you get Bluegrass and, well, if they let me link it, this:

Great information, Lara. I love hearing about that kind of history so many of us are a part of.
Great video in your link too!
@@RogerRowe I didn't expect anyone to see it so soon! Trying to clean up my text and confirm a few further facts, but it's an amazing history. I'll be adding a bit more over the next days. I appreciate your kind words!
Don't need to see more. That old guy gets my vote!
He was one of kind. Paul Shelnut. RIP.
Bonito video waooooo hermoso
The man behind in great too!!!
LIFE IS GOOD!
Thall be such hootin'and hollerin'. And oh my possum pie with ground hog casserole. Ever body will be high on "shine" and makin' a fool of themselves. Bring. The kids.... it's a heritage worth savin'.
Tennessee tar heel tapping. They probably thought this dance up after trying get that tar off their shoes. 😊
Skinny Santa, from The same video of the same guys dancing to a different song every day
Hey if they all brought there own bourds, it might get rid of those moles in the lawn.
I'd rather they just sort of run ran off.
Without bumping into anything!
Love it...
.
I’d love to learn this, I’d dance anytime I’m in a line. Grocery store, bank, probably lose five pounds at the DMV.
Great idea
Wonder how many pacemakers were reset after this?
U win

I love this and I don't know why. I also thought about the amount of firearms that must be present.
I am sure!
Paul Shelnutt is my dad and I miss dancing with him dearly. Thank you to whoever filmed this.
Hi Wally, Seems a lot of people knew Paul or at least knew who he was. The day I recorded this I had no idea who he was I could tell it wasn't his time! He entertained a lot of people and people loved him, from all over the place. Please accept my condolences. A lot of folks are going to miss him too.
He was a special dancer. I recognized him from other videos :) hopefully the dance has passed on as well as his other good traits.
@@RogerRowe i see him from the video they had of him....with the same guys dancing with a different song
RIP Paul Shelnutt .
Cool as hell. ...Master
So good to see the older folks having a good time. Enjoy life while we can! Bless your hearts.
And the young kids joining in and being passed down this great heritage.
It would do your heart good just to see sure innocent fun. Well done Folks.
This is one way of keeping traditions alive and well in modern times. If we don't, cultures are lost.
When that guy brought on his own dance board it got real, you just knew the other where just backing dancers .
Wolfbbq BBQ clogging on concrete is really bad for the joints. He uses the wood as a shock absorber. Plus it sounds better.
The man who brought his own board is Paul Shelnutt and he is perhaps the best clog dancer in the Appalachian Mountains.
He is the man, for sure.
Love this stuff. Hello from Ireland
@@tonymcgahan7272 Hey Tony. Greetings.
@@RogerRowe Hey Roger. Thanks for posting. I'm a big fan of Bluegrass. You can feel the connection with Traditional Irish music...

Funny you say that, I was watching more and saw him on a lot of videos
Love his enthusiasm and spirit
Michael Lives on even through hillbillies.

That 'dude' is a master and great ambassor to his culture.
