  • World-champion skier Lindsey Vonn says that there are some serious trials facing US ski racing, including how it treats its athletes. She wants to help with the recruitment of young talent, but acknowledges that funding may be a difficult hurdle. Vonn also talks about her challenging relationship with fellow skiing phenom Mikaela Shiffrin. Vonn criticizes Shiffrin’s leadership style, and questions Outside Magazine’s claim that Shiffrin is the world’s greatest.

LV has always struggled to give credit to others or accept blame. With all the wins she never seemed truly happy. When she didn't win she seldom offered congratulations to those who beat her and often times came up with excuses for why her run wasn't fair. Lindsey wants to relegate Mikaela's talent to slalom and clearly feels threatened that her mantel of GOAT could be short lived. Meanwhile when LV was at the same point in her career that Mikaela is now she had a total of 13 WC victories compared to Mikaela's 66 victories. Of those 13, 10 were downhill, 2 SG, 1 combined, so pretty much a speed skier. Mikaela has 6 wins in speed and 11 in GS to go along with 43 slalom. The numbers speak for themselves, Mikaela is a far more well rounded skier who is taking speed wins despite her heavy focus on technical events. I think every time Lindsey opens her mouth she probably makes herself feel worse.

This all said I hope Mikaela stays away from DH. It always lead to a path of terrible crashed and body destruction. As a avoid skier and lover of Killington VT I have been fortunate enough to witness Mikaela's greatness on the FIS tour the last few years.

Comparing apples to oranges over the winners podium is part of the supremacists ego each has to ski their run in the place of their placement and under the conditions handed to them .They're all great skiers LV just fell more pushing her envelope . And now it's over for lv and as she reflects the saddest words are what might have been.

I really loved Lindsey and I still do lot but the fact that she tries to narrow Mikaela's talent down to just being the "greatest SLALOM skier" is a bit unfair to say in my opinion. Yes, she does not have as many World Cup wins yet but with her 66 wins she is quite close (to Lindsey's 82), has won in all five disciplines such as Lindsey already (just more in SL and GS and Linds in DH and SG), has more Gold medals in World Champs and Olympics than her and is still very young. I understand Lindsey that she was upset as this article apparently came out while she was still skiing but once again: it would be unfair to narrow Mikaela's talent down to just being a great SLALOM skier as that's clearly not all.

As someone that doesn't know either of these ladies personally, take what I say with a grain of salt. Lindsey strikes me as someone that would take any opportunity to compete if she thought she was able. Mikaela, on the other hand, seems to be very measured with regard to both her physical and mental state. If she has doubts about her readiness, she will not compete. Both approaches are valid. However, I believe Mikaela's approach, to this point, has been best. I think her self-awareness has served her well, and she should stick with that.

These are some great comments from Lindsey on Mikaela and the state of US Ski Team. As a past USSA/FIS ski racer I know how important mental strength is for a sport like this. Having a clear mind with your own gameplan at the forefront is critical. Others' opinions and thoughts can easily mislead you from what your plan is. Mikaela has the recipe for success dialed, why should she want to be influenced by others who are not as successful? To Lindsey's point on being a leader and helping others is something else. It would be awesome if the US had a team of all Mikaela caliber athletes, she could be sharing more with the team to bring others up. And I think that's what Lindsey had wanted with her. On the state of the team I can definitely agree moving up the ranks in the USSA and FIS program was very challenging and often felt unobtainable. College athletes often go overlooked as the college programs are separate from the USSA. Cost is another issue that in my case ultimately ended my pursuit. Having enough opportunity and exposure to see the fastest racers is huge. Having the US team members at regional events like the Lutsen spring series was inspirational. If the team is not seeing up any upcoming athletes they need to remove as many hurdles as possible to pave the way for future stars.

Lindsey says it perfectly here- Shiffrin is the winningest slalom skier of all time, but not the overall g.o.a.t. (Vonn 82 world cup wins, Shiffrin 67, both have 3 olympic medals, Vonn has 8 world championship medals to Shiffrin's 7).
Is it that hard for a reporter to add the words slalom, downhill or overall instead of lumping it together? Vonn and Shiffrin's w.c. wins are almost the exact opposite across the 4 disciplines: DH, SuperG, GS, and Slalom. Vonn had 66 Downhill wins but only 2 slalom, Shiffrin has 43 slalom and only 2 downhill.
If you've skied a downhill course versus slalom course or just seen it on TV, you can see the difference in technique is probably as big a difference in technique as between running a marathon versus running the 100 meter hurdles! If talking about runners, no one would lump every track distance and discipline together and then pick one 'greatest runner of all time'!
sports media need to show skiing and these female athletes respect, don't try to create a rivalry that didn't exist and lump them together- separately they are each the g.o.a.t. for their area of specialty.

I gotta agree with the comments here. Why go out of your way to disrespect Mikaela Shiffrin? Besides being the best skier in the world the past 5 years, Mikaela has been the classiest skier. She always goes out of her way to congratulate her opponents when they beat her. Always. She has never publicly uttered a bad word about anyone. Never. Vonn simply cannot deal with the fact that Mikaela will almost certainly end her career with more wins than she has. She claimed that Outdoor Mag calling Mikaela the best ever didn’t bother her, but she then said it was disrespectful, tweeted about it, and relegated Mikaela to being merely the best slalom skier ever. I feel sorry for Vonn that she’s so insecure and bitter about her place in skiing history. Vonn is one of the best skiers ever. She’s definitely on the Mount Rushmore of skiers. She’s undoubtedly the toughest and most fearless skier ever. It’s impossible not to admire her tenacity, courage, and abilities, but it’s unfortunate that she is so insecure about her place in history. Is Joe Montana bitter that Tom Brady won two more superbowls? The truth is that Mikaela has the same level of talent as Vonn, but unlike Vonn she is way better at managing the risks. Which is why Mikaela has suffered no major injury in her career and has won more races much more quickly than Vonn. Think about NFL QBs would can run. And think about the ones who had the best and longest careers. Is it the guy who ran with reckless abandon and head first into the teeth of the defense or the guy who picked his spots and always slid feet first. How about hockey? His much longer and better would Eric Lindross have been if he left the forechecking and aggressive play to enforcers? Bully for Lyndsey for skiing with reckless abandon, but she has only herself to blame for many if not most of her injuries. But I am officially done caring about Lyndsey Vonn. I have better things to do than to care about such a poor sport who needlessly felt the need to trash Mikaela Shiffrin.

Vonn complains about the media, yet decision after decision she’s made has kept her in the spotlight because she can’t live without the attention. She’s just a slightly less trashy version of Hope Solo. Shiffrin should stay far far far away from the train wreck of a person that Vonn is. Look at the social media of Shiffrin vs. Vonn and tell me which one lives a better life. It ain’t Vonn. She’s obsessed with herself and it’s frankly just sad.

The big reason the US ski team is not getting enough good talent is simply money. Ski racing is generally a sport of the rich or at the very least well off. Yes I know there have been few outliers. Just how it is and I don't see that ever changing. The cost of a day ski ticket is insane, fortunately season passes make it doable. The reason we don’t have a lot of women great women’s skiers on the team is the sport is ridiculous expensive. You need to have wealthy parents or sponsors. The cost for lift tickets, coaches, training time, travel and equipment. The team travels to Chile or New Zealand during summer months. Only a few kids can do this. The sport is more supported by countries and fans in Europe. It is a dangerous sport and there are a lot of knee injuries.

But, they’re both changing all the time and have changed since this interview as Lindsey is becoming more famous for other things besides her skiing and Mikaela has transitioned to a more independent lifestyle without losing much of her former ambition and desire to perfect her skills, although she provided has lost some, I mean, come on, how could you not be she’ll shocked by whatever happened, still she’s so phenomenal that she’s still in one piece even after all that and is still going really strong so she’s not likely to just stop pursuing her fame and fortune unless she becomes a fan of Elvis Presley and decides that she no longer wants fame and fortune, right? I don't think she's bitter though that's initially what I thought. I think some of it is that it still kind of hurts to even think about ski racing right now because for the first time in her life she's not only not in it but not going back. Also, when she said that the media sensationalizes things she wasn't trying to say that Mikeala is overrated. What she was saying is that Mikeala is the best slalom skier ever right now because she is. But she isn't the greatest of all time, yet. That doesn't mean she won't respect the crap out of her when she does become the GOAT. Is Lindsey still struggling with the fact that she got that close? Probably. When you have a childhood dream and you want it so bad and you get so close it hurts. At the same time I remember when Abby Wambach did that Gatorade commercial and she was saying "Forget me. Forget I ever existed", it was about not letting it stop with her. I think Lindsey was trying to be careful about how she worded her answer. So they aren't that close, big deal. I think Lindsey sort of takes personally the fact that Mikeala kind of shuts herself off with her own team of people. Lindsey herself used to do that and found out that support from your teammates can really help. When you're young and successful, you don't always see both sides of the coin. On one hand Shiffrin is an amazing elite athlete and her system works for her and that's great. At the same time, while ski racing is very much individualized, you also are a team. Lindsey was trying to be a supportive teammate. Plus Lindsey initially started out skiing slalom. She switched over to speed. It's very difficult to be successful across all disciplines. That's why most people focus on one or the other. Lindsey is one of the few people that has won races across all disciplines.

Even some of the more recent interviews with Ms Shiffren were not very flattering. I chalk it up to a character trait that allows them to excel, but also makes it difficult for them to find peace and purpose within themselves. Lendl and McEnroe, Navratilova, .... Just the over-achieving mentality of all these athletes will take its toll. We only watch the highlight reels of their lives and pass judgement.

Shiffrin will never have the impact on the sport that Vonn has regardless of how many records or wins she wracks up. Vonn's personality is relatable, we felt her emotions, we felt like we were winning with her. They are different people, both excellent skiers but Vonn's personality and approach to the sport were significantly more entertaining to watch and we all felt like rooting for her. Vonn skis like it means everything to her, she throws her whole self into it. Shiffrin is more technical and reserved, doesn;t ski when she's not sure she will win, doesn't take big risks, and that's made her successful but I want to watch someone who is fired up, who struggles and comes back from lows to be on top again, who takes risks. Vonn is who I grew up looking up to because of that struggle and that fire.

Sking is very unobtainable for a great many people in the U.S.
many have been priced right out. I love skiing but I wouldn’t pay the lift ticket prices today the are outrageous.
this is not how you cultivate talent.

Shiffrin races slalom. LV races downhill. Going 80+ mph with 200+ cm skis at over 4x the distance takes way more skill and training. Why do you think Shiffrin started racing the easy DH on circuit? She doesn’t want the same asterisk next to her name the Stenmark has.

No my friend Shiffrin and Vonn ski in all 5 disciplines, Roland Garros is as a Wimbledon is mayor, what you think what major of this 2 is harder to win, Roland Garros is most hardest to win slam but all 4 are majors 7 round in the best of 5, slam is slam, all tennis players in the world they biggest dream is win major not to be nomber 1 in the World list, if one day 1 player only win in 1 slam 21 major he is a goat, in tennis my favorit slam is Roland Garros but in ski downhill but win is a win, and if you dont now that first 2 disciplines was slalom and Downhill, like in tennis 2 most popular slams a Wimbledon and Roland Garros, in this 2 sports most speed courts and more slowest court are most prestige, but win is a win Nadal 20 Federer 20,and i think this comentar from Vonn is awful, i have argument that i say that a best female skiers is Janica Kostelic 3 gold and 1 silver on only 1 olimpic game, than again 2 medals from olimpic 1 gold 1 silver, 3 overall titles and in last season of her she win in all 5 disciplines in one year and she has retiried at age 24 because she is from country where i live but no ho will have more wins she would be a goat, end of story
