    P.S. "一" (jat1), "六" (luk6) and "日" (jat6) finish with an entering tone (as any Chinese character finishes with "p", "t" and "k" in Jyutping are classified as "entering tones"). Therefore, when you pronounce those Chinese characters, the end part of the sound finishes a bit quicker. If you're interested in knowing more, please check out this video with further explanation:

      Since I want to have one focus for beginners, hence I use "星期" in this video. I have mentioned "禮拜" in other videos, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/CtYmYsGK1FU/v-deo.html

      @wecancanto Thank you for your reply. I don't know how to read characters and understand very little Hoisan dialect but Cantonese have similar sounds.

      @@pandabear153 You're welcome! "禮拜" (lai5 baai3) means "lai bai" in Hoisan Vah. Yes, there are many similarities. It's a beautiful thing for you to embrace your mother tongue if it is the case. Keep up your work! Thanks for dropping by again!

    Two Sing1 Kei3 Jat1?

    • @wecancanto
      @wecancanto  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for dropping by :)
      For days of the week, we have "sing1 kei4 jat1" (星期一: Monday) and "sing1 kei4 jat6" (星期日: Sunday).
      Regarding their pronunciation, both "Monday" (sing1 kei4 jat1) and"Sunday" (sing1 kei4 jat6) share the same syllable (jat) but in different tones. While "Monday" is in its first tone (jat1), "Sunday" is in its sixth tone (jat6).
      It's a bit like the music notes "do re mi", the tone of "Monday" sounds a bit like "fa" (a bit higher), and the tone of "Sunday" sounds a bit like "re" (a bit lower). Since Cantonese is a "tonal language", words in different tones with the same syllable can be quite different for most of the time.
      Hope it helps :)

      Good question. Regarding their pronunciation, both "Sunday" and "Monday" share the same syllable (jat) but in different tones. While "Monday" is in its first tone, "Sunday" is in its sixth tone. • @wecancanto
      @wecancanto  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for dropping by! You're right. Besides using "星期- sing1 kei4", it's also correct to use "禮拜- lai5 baai3". If you prefer "禮拜", you can definitely swap it with "星期". One of the reasons why I picked "星期" is that "星期" is also commonly used in written form as well. But for conversations, feel free to use both. Why it's like the Cantonese of 'week' and Cantonese of 'numbers' I'm confused

    • @wecancanto
      @wecancanto  2 місяці тому

      @DonalynBaua-kb9cl Thanks for dropping by. In Cantonese, to describe days of the week, it's a bit like how Monday to Sunday that they all finish with the word "day", but we use the word "week" (星期 -sing1 kei4) as the start, followed by a number according to their sequence. So “Monday” as the first day of the weekdays, it is called “week number one” - “星期一 - sing1 kei4 jat1”; Tuesday is “week number two” - “星期二 - sing1 kei4 ji6” and so on until Sunday is “week sun” - “星期日 - sing1 kei4 jat6”. Hope it makes sense to you.
