I like the idea of Strava deriving a route for a structured workout, but I think traffic lights and other intersections/pinch points are a killer for a workout. The workout would need to be pretty fluid.
I’ve recently ditched my smart bike (thanks to a warranty refund), and decided to give up all indoor training.. haven’t missed it at all. Structured workouts are all done on the local crit track or climb repeats. Rainy days will be spent in the gym 💪🏻

That is cool. I love your commitment to the road. I think structured workouts could work, they just need to be reimagined. Does it need to be 3 x 5m or could it be 6m, 3m, 4m based on the terrain you have available.

The idea of a segment selection on the road would be interesting.

There are so many great local routes that people go past everyday because they don't know they are there. The segment in my video with the great view is an example.

my strava wish: (is for the over 50's) to be able to reset your segment times each year ... so you don't have to watch your segment times get slower year on year. With a reset, you can get the rush of the best time of the year, rather than being constantly reminded that no matter how hard you try you were better five years ago. I know that.

TrainingPeaks does this, you get yearly and 90d Power and HR medals. Those “all-time” medals are getting rarer and rarer for me 😜.

The route planning idea is a very good one. I’ve just started seriously using Strava to build up my endurance and found the route building to be a bit fiddly and annoying. Given I live in Brisbane (bike way heaven up here) I do tend to just jump on and ride until I figure I’ve done about half what my goal is and then I turn back. I’ve also come across intersections and wondered if it was worth going left or right and if I could make it a loop or not. Strava knows this data, but it can’t access it properly on the phone app. Drawing routes with your finger is impossible.

I’m all for more adventurous snakey routes, instead of clean loops.

@@ModerateCyclist I love doing meandering rides without too much pre-planned routing, but that’s mainly on the weekend. Of course in the weekdays, I need to get an efficient half hour to hour in the morning or evening before / after work (especially in winter when the daylight time is limited) and I’ve found myself just using the same basic routes to/from the house around the local bike paths every day these past few weeks. Strava isn’t much help in recommending new alternatives

I feel like we are experiencing the same problems. I really do think there are hidden gems about that are hidden in plain sight.

First idea sounds great but god implimenting this would be crazy. Second Idea, nah. Why not just ride. Turn left or right into the unknown and see where it goes if you don't want to do any pre-ride research. Not to mention there are infinite segments that branch off from most end segments. Ride to ride. If you want a pick a path, stick your bike outside on a trainer and play zwift. It's an idea...I don't think it's a great one. Why is doing a preride look at what to do so hard?

I think you would need a model for identifying candidate sections, then cutting a path between them that doesn't give too much rest time. It's do about, but as you suggest, complex. I agree the second is not as strong of an idea. But I do find it frustrating. Some people are happy to run the same loops over and over, but I like to generate some variety. I think of KOMs and TT segments as building blocks, and I often want to stitch together combos.

Hahaha, that is definitely a perpetual thought for me too.
