  • Come tour this beautiful in wall saltwater reef aquarium at Brett's house!
I want to thank Brett for allowing us to tour his system. Hopefully he'll let us continue to watch his progress on the new reef tank build.
Also a huge thanks once again to Tyler (inland_reef) for the beautiful macro shots.

Kind of stupid but I'm glad to hear he moved. I set up an in wall talk 2 years ago and also have to move in a few weeks. Feel dumb for sinking so much into the tank, only to have to move it so soon after.

Great to see you back Remy.
Not trying to be disrespectful, nor am I against high-end or over engineered setups. But.. All this and close to no corals?
I see this more and more often where people invest a ton on gadgets and the flexing side of the hobby than what actually matters - the live stock and what it needs to thrive.
I guess from my point of view, it’s just disappointing to watch these great setups not being utilized or pushed to their full potential..

    • @BahamaLlamaCoral
      @BahamaLlamaCoral  2 роки тому +1

It's a relatively young tank. If he hadn't moved and I went back to visit in a couple years I have no doubt that this thing would be jam packed with mature colonies. In my opinion, if you can swing the nice setup with all the equipment to start - do it. I'd much rather have the gear I need ready to go instead of purchasing bits and pieces along the way.

@@BahamaLlamaCoral I probably missed the part where he mentioned the age of the system, and it explains a lot.
That being said, I would still start first with a more minimal, future expandable setup and invest more on the corals as early as possible to later have the demand to start expanding the system.
But generally speaking, I think it’s an interesting topic to discuss, and I would love to hear more of your reasoning behind upfront investment, because as you already noticed my approach is different than yours.
(Probably not the best platform to discuss the topic in comments, but I’ll try to explain some of my own points, not entirely related to this setup though)
From my own 15 years of adventure and experience in the hobby I’ve seen how fast things change and evolve. We didn’t have roller mats or even socks, nor LED lights and many other shenanigans we consider today as regular, and when those came out they were either ridiculously bad or greatly improved on older solutions or versions.
But one thing that triggered me the most is the highly expensive monitoring and automation equipment, because it spawned an entire generation of wasteful spending on many, many young and undemanding setups.
Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the desire to monitor and automate a system, as well as the benefit in doing so, but I’m also very well aware of the conditions where equipment like this is actually beneficial, and where it’ll be the source of all problems (this isn’t the case here btw).
A system that houses 10, 20 or even 30 hardy corals doesn’t need a big amount of sensors or excessive daily tests to succeed, and if it does, you certainly aren’t giving it enough attention and it’ll crash regardless of any equipment you own or not.
In my opinion the equation to start considering an investment particularly on the monitoring side of things needs to be as simple as “does my live stock cost more?” If it isn’t, it’s too early.
Because for example, by the time the setup above would be mature enough to be benefiting from 24/7 monitoring it’ll (a) be older - all new rings and bells may not be supported and (b) degraded - requiring additional investment to replace probes, and more.
All while the money invested in reagents and replacement probes could’ve been funneled towards live stock.
At the end of the day I think it’s all about a healthy balance between the live stock and the equipment to support it, the greater time and money investment on equipment, the longer it’ll take to tune in, purchase corals and have a beautiful, fully packed tank of healthy colonies.
I have more, much more to write, but this gets ridiculously long, and I think you got my point 😅
      Have a nice weekend Remy!
