  • Lord Buckley was one of the most interesting and charismatic entertainers I've ever heard of. He was an American who used an aristocratic British accent while talking in the "hip" African-American slang of his day, which he called "hipsemantic". He defied classification but I would call him a humorist, storyteller and social commentator. He lived from 1906-1960. This bit is from a live performance called the "Ivar Concert" done in Hollywood, CA in 1959 and it's one of my favorites. It's a wild tale about a Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca who lived from circa 1490-1558. He led an expedition in 1527 (not 1510 as Buckley states) to what became Florida and suffered several disasters, from both nature and natives, but survived and trekked thru much of North America for about 8 years and became a trader and faith healer to various Native American tribes before finally returning to Spain. Buckley celebrates him in this bit as a worker of miracles. There was a movie made about Cabeza de Vaca in 1991. Buckley occasionally was seen on TV and in at least one movie (starring Marilyn Monroe!) and voiced a character in a cartoon. His work influenced some famous comedians such as Lenny Bruce and Robin Williams. From the CD "Buckley's Best Live".
