Milky Way Silos - Panorama Shooting

- A little while ago I met a group of photographers in the Central Victorian town of Sea Lake to shoot the beautiful milky way setting over the enchanting silo complex on the edge of town.
While there we visited the mystical Lake Tyrrell to shoot some other subjects.

Lake Tyrrell can be very good to shoot at, provided that you can get away from the mob at night. Heading up the western side of the lake offers some good compositions and vistas. You did well with the Silo panorama 👍😎😁
Thanks Geoff. I did venture to the western side and encountered a car load of people driving up a dead end dirt track at 1am . .no idea what they were looking for but I doubt they were photographers judging by the noise coming from the car.
It's a beautiful place up there. Yes, we had a beautiful time when we were up there. And we had nobody at the bus. We slept right there.
You were very lucky indeed Jeff.
Happy to see you again, Richard. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos on my favourite channel! Best Wishes!
I very much appreciate that Rafael.
Happy Birthday Richard! WOW so many people at the Bus there must be some people putting up Awesome images of it on Facebook (and other media sites) and now everyone wants their shots??
Yes you may be right John. Although I reckon many of the people who were there were not even taking photos.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Yes that does seem weird to be there and not take photos?? But there are people who go bird watching and just look at them and not take photos too ! But Yes the weekends are so busy at spots like this ..
I was so happy to see you in good health in your last video. I apologize but I forgot to mention that in your last video, Richard.
I was delighted with the photo of the Silos, because as I said, they are inside the village. You can only get an idea of where the silos are with the drone footage, and the photos of the lake and the bus with that sea of people were fantastic. Take care, Richard. Until your next video, which will be soon.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support Mario, always appreciated.
Wowww too many people for me too - i love it up there when its quiet and mid week and not tourist season. Amazing images you still captured even though conditions were challenging.
Thanks Judy. Much busier than my previous trips up there.
Another wonderful video and great Saturday morning viewing over a cup of tea. Keep living the dream Richard!
Good on you David. Thank you.
Love that silo shot, the colours of the sky and the silo are amazing. Thanks for the Lake Tyrrell tip. :)
You're very welcome Andrew
I just learned to go to shooting spots alone or with one photographer friend. At night shooting doesnt like sorpresive beam light affecting a astro , meteor o landscape moment. Love those panorama shootings that you got, Another great video..Thanks for it!
Always appreciate your comments Luis
Oh wow, that is way too many people for me too! I would have left for sure. I really liked your final painted silos & milky way shot.
Thanks for tuning in Nerrel. I was amazed at how few people were at the silos during the night.
I agree with you…I am not the best with crowds especially when I am shooting at night lol. Also love the simple single night shots. Sometimes less says more. Regards Matt
Thanks Matt. Totally agree.
That panorama is amazing! I'm going to try my hand at some of your techniques of lighting up farm machinery tonight at the farm I work at (Hillston NSW) Have a big speed tiller parked near a machinery shed and will do something with that using your lighting methods as well as some other light painting.
Hope it goes well. Appreciate you watching.
It was a great weekend Richard...great images, but yes you are spot on re all the people...I kept saying at the bus "WHAT ARE THEY DOING, they don't even have any cameras???" We eventually got there, I was two minutes away myself from packing up and leaving. (Gosh I didn't realise how awful I look while walking along!! Duck comes to mind....I've had my surgery and hopefully will be walking a bit straighter and normally!!)
Thanks Carmel. You'll be right . .these things take time. Enjoyed your company.
Great story Richard. Another thanks for sharing your experience with us 😊 Clear Skies!
You're very welcome
Some amazing locations, Richard - really feel your frustration with the crowds (in my book, a crowd is any other person!). Absolutely love the silo image. Thanks for sharing, and many happy returns! 🎉
Thanks heaps Paul. Always much appreciated mate.
The silos are amazing. And the image you took just fantastic!
Thanks for looking Oliver.
Good to see you back on form Richard. Thanks again.
Many thanks indeed.
Great video, makes me want to jump in the car and have a look.
Thanks Stephen . .make sure you don't go on a long weekend . .!!!
Oh the silos are brilliant Richard that is such a great panorama. The lake, well Instagram has a lot to answer for along with selfie takers.
Thanks so much Peter, appreciate your comments.
Always makes my day to see you have posted a new video Richard! Each shoot and location makes for a new experience! My astro shoot last week resulted with my ground tent being relocated 300 meters due to high winds. No matter - camera stayed put! :)
Thanks for your very kind support Kerry.
Despite the crowds you did manage to get away with some beautiful shots and am enjoyable video!
Always appreciate your support Jeroen my friend.
It’s been years since I’ve been anywhere on the weekend for that reason. Great photo of the silos 🌌✨
Fantastic images & love the silo Milky Way image 👏👏🇮🇪
Really appreciated Vivian.
Your pano @7:45 is an absolute beauty Richard! Hope you're well mate 😊.
Thanks Paul. Yes I'm doing well.
What a great image, Richard, lake Terrell is on my list
Thanks as always Phillip.
Nice vlog and some amazing images.. love the Panorama and also the image of the old bus (despite such a large crowd around you)..
The Pinnacles in WA is becoming busy in the weekend as well and I can relate to what you say around do not go in long weekend..
Keep some videos coming Richard and Happy Birthday mate 🎉
Thanks so much Virat, you're a legend my friend.
Hi Richard, love your images and videos as always. If you were up my way on the Melbourne Cup weekend it would have been the Sea Lake Astrofest at Lake Tyrell at happens every year on that weekend. Normally it isn't that crazy busy there after sunset.
Yes I did hear about that. No this was back in September.
My sister and I were there on the same night. Hoping to get some shots of the night sky at the lake. We saw you there with your photography friends we wanted to say hi but didn’t want to disturb you. Your videos have been so helpful for us beginners of Astro photographing. We also decided to head off early because of the crowds. We were at the silos the night before. Keep the videos coming 😊
You should have said hello . .I'm always happy to chat with people. It's a great spot if you can get it to yourself that's for sure.
As usual great shots and very inspiring video.
Thanks so much for watching.
That’s silo Photo is awesome!
Thank you Kent
Stunning pictures thanks for sharing 👍
You're welcome David.
Nice video, please produce more
I'll do my best.
I’m guessing they still haven’t resumed the night time projections onto the silos. That was fantastic to watch and makes for an interesting photo and a challenging one as well. Surprised you haven’t done the old grader yet as that is a wonderful subject for nightscape photography.
They did project a very soft light onto the silos. Haven't been very motivated to trek out to the grader.
Fun video Richard, and I feel your frustration. There are a couple of spots here in SA where I just don’t bother with on a moonless weekend because of the crowds, but always have to reminds myself that they are trying to capture the amazing things we see all the time 😊(even if they don’t understand that headlamps, headlights and loud music don’t help their chances😂😂😂).
Yes you are so right Eric. But I did get the feeling that many of the people there had no idea what they were actually there for . .they seemed to be just "Hanging Out" ...!!!!
PS: Looking forward to catching you in New Zealand next September.
Nice story Richard 🙂
Appreciate you watching Les
This place looks amazing!
Wonderful shots of the beautiful silos Richard. I'm with you... I enjoy the solitude or perhaps a couple fellow photographers but I won't stay around if there is a mob hanging out. Take care, Jerry
Good on you Jerry. It was a hard slog I tell you.
There is so much more domestic tourism across Australia since Covid. Great we're all getting out there to see our country, but also saddening as the solitude of these places is lost and damage done from the visitor numbers. Lake Tyrell always seems such a gamble for astro, so many variables to peg that classic sky mirror shot, especially if you are doing big panos. One day I'll get there just for astro, will certainly be mid week 😂.
Love the silos Richard, they never seem to disappoint 🌌.
Thanks heaps Dominic. Look forward to catching up this coming Tuesday ..!!!
I had the same experience when I was at Sea Lake, people everywhere with torches.
Love your silo photo
Thanks Julie, really appreciated.
Beautiful pics
Oh wow... I would feel like leaving as well 😂 I go out to be alone and experience the stillness. Plus I would feel weird vlogging with all those people!
Yes that's so true Martin . .which is one reason I didn't actually do any vlogging on location.
You took friends??? I better check for my invite I must have missed it, in my email!😆😆😆Great work once again, and I love how you can make an old post look awesome.
The invite must be still in the mail mate ..!!!! No, I didn't actually organise this trip.
Great vid and spot Richard. All of us Astro photographers hate crowds and also people who can’t use their cameras in the dark. Deb and I would luv to see you do a vid on going out to the grader. Pick a week night out of season and you are bound to have it to yourself.
Thanks Andrew. Not sure I want to make that trip with a heap of video gear as well as photo cameras ..!!! I'm not friends with that corrosive water out there.
Thanks so much for your great support Patrick.
Will have to get there some day, looks like an amazing place to photograph. Good advice, weekday :) Enjoyed the video well done as always :)
Always appreciate you watching Alan.
Hello Richard awesome work on your photos..I was wondering if you would be able to do a video on how you setup your star tracker thank you
Thanks for watching. Yes I will do future videos about setting up star trackers. But I do have some already on that subject. See here: ua-cam.com/play/PLAYKmqkUeSM9CQ2l5zOSr479ZmlusOlpN.html
@nightscapeimages.richard ok cool that would be great..I will have a look at the video.
Thanks Richard, always delightful to watch your videos. Would you think the Laowa 10mm f/2.8 will able to take the whole Silos without taking Panorama shot?
As always very much enjoy your vids here in the states. Hope to visit Australia in the near future. Probably for one or both of the solar eclipses. Brad DeLay, Dalton Georgia, USA
Thanks so much for tuning in.
The lake reminds me a bit of the Salton Sea here in California.
Yes it's very shallow Bill
New video!
Thanks for tuning in.
Great story, Richard. Weekends can be crazy around here, too. Oh, I haven’t seen anything from John in months, how’s he doing?
John's going ok. He's just been very busy.
Thanks, Richard. I appreciate the update. Clear skies.
Superb images as usual....the silo pano is world class ☺
We have a similar issue with the Pinnacles Desert, probably the most popular spot for astro within two hours of Perth. The first time I went there I only saw two other cars, subsequent times in the years after that I have been there completely alone. But the last few years I have been there on weekends and it has been full of people, cars coming and going, tourist buses leaving their lights on for ages etc. It's crazy. But hey, I think us astrophotographers should take some of the blame, posting all these astro shots that people seem to love and who then want to try it out themselves at the same locations. We are doing our bit for astrotourism but it has consequences...the Instagram Effect!
Yes Trevor, your comments make a lot of sense for sure. The strange thing is that many of the people wandering around at night weren't even taking any images at all . .it was like they just wanted to hang out there.
Hi Richard,, as always beautiful pictures. However, one question regarding that panorama. Why did you shoot the foreground at higher ISO and lower f stop than the sky? My intuition would be the other way around for less noise and more sharpness. What was your reason to chose these settings? Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Andy (from Switzerland)
Good questions Andy. The reality is that there are always multiple options when choosing settings for nightscape shooting. The silos were a long way from the camera so focus was not an issue. I was a little worried about the abundant amount of traffic driving past the silos . .so I wanted to shoot the foreground as quickly as possible. . thus the settings chosen.
I was very happy with the sharpness and clarity at f2.2 on this lens. I did apply Topaz noise reduction in post.
Need to be educated about the annotation on your great photos. What does 1 X Tracked Sky refer to? Also what does 2 X Foreground mean? Keep the informative videos coming!
Great spot pity about the campers🖖
Great to see you out and about. Love the silos. Have you used a nodal rail/panorama mount? Did the silos and track stich easily? Many thanks, Paul.
Thanks for watching Paul. No I don't use a nodal rail/panorama mount. I had no trouble stitching the panos. I used microsoft ICE.
Great pics Richard, especially the one of the silos. I have seen a number of these in our previous videos and always thought them to be a terrific foreground. On the drone flyby, was the word Tyrell a vfx or was it actually there ?
Fantastic photos Richard. Did you advertise your trip on Facebook to get so many followers tripping to Sea lake🤣
Haha, no advertising needed up there Darren.
Outstanding work Sir Richard, even with all those people around. Sir do you use nd filters like cross screen 4x filters ? ( maybe in one video you can tell us some thoughts about some filters, if you use any of course) Thank you so much again Sir
Thanks for watching. I don't use any filters at all with my nightscape photography.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thank you so much sir for your quick response
Great video, what drone do you use?
Thank you. I use the DJI Air2S
Amazing images once again, great to see your videos once again.
Did you go with the blue hour foreground for your pano?
Thanks Alasdair. In the end I went with the night foreground for the pano.
@ thanks for the reply Richard, I only asked as I too was clouded out recently when shooting the foreground before I had a chance to shoot any sky, hopefully another chance soon 😊
That lake looks so gorgeous, so its no surpise its crowded :D nice pano of silos. Will you avoid using 16mm in the future due to IR problems as I see you used 20mm for that shot? Or it just worked better for this composition?
Well I prefer the 20mm anyway but I'll use the Viltrox 16mm on occasions where the light leaks won't be an issue. I hope they can fix it soon though.
@@nightscapeimages.richard honestly, I wouldnt get my hopes up about that fix.
You already have E to Z adapter, so it would be worth getting E mount version of that lens, because for some strange reason, at least to my knowledge, the IR reflection is not visible there (Carl James uses E mount on modified Nikon Z and he said he doesnt get the reflection).
@@matej.mlakar Yes that may be an option I suppose.
Question, do you think you were too close to the Silos? Seems like everything is a bit distorted?
That's what happens when you shoot panoramas. Straight lines (such as the railway lines) become curved. Same with the face of the silos. We are trying to put a 3D perspective into a 2D space.
Hope the roo damage didn’t cost too much!
Still working through that saga Roger. It will take a while.
It can be very frustrated when we had had an ideal night, an ideal location and all of a sudden people with headlights ,torch etc poped up there and ruined our plan. However, we could not do anything about it as it is a public location but again we are still frustrated with that anyway .... // Love that Silo Pano by the way 🥰
Very true indeed.
🤎👍🏾💪🏾🪶🦅
Very nice images. For me, your dialog is tedious. I don’t do YT content so I don’t know the strategies, etc but as a viewer, I would like to see more images, more how to, and less ranting about the crowds. I hope this helps you out.
Well I appreciate you watching. I'd be keen to learn from your informative and free nightscape photography content here on youtube.
