    Just a note: The USS Maine was rated as an armored cruiser (despite being known to most citizens as the Battleship Maine), and had ACR-1 as her designation; but her near-sister the USS Texas was finished and rated as a second-class battleship, even though she was never officially given that designation. The USS Texas is considered by historians to have been the first U.S. battleship, and should probably be included in this list.

      Is this the USS Maine that was sunk in Havana Harbor, precipitating the Spanish American War?

      Yes, that’s the one. The second USS Maine was rated, and numbered, as a battleship.

      If you are referring to battleships fighting battleships, only South Dakota and Washington actually fought. (and won) But all of the battleships saw some action and palyed a part in WW2. The USS New York and Texas each saw duty in both WW1 and WW2. USS Wyoming was the oldest BB, and used as a gunnery training ship after the Utah was sunk at Pearl Harbor. The Utah, like Arizona, is still at Pearl Harbor, and there is a memorial there.

      Jkdm 76 - The last Iowa class battleship was actually built but was not built into a battleship. It was built into the thickest armored hull Aircraft Carrier ever built. It became the U.S.S MIDWAY. Until the arrival of nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier, the Midway was one of the fastest conventional powered carriers ever built. It's narrow hull permitted it to be able to travel through the Panama Canal. She now resides as a museum in San Diego.

    • @sdavrider
      @sdavrider 7 років тому +3

      ghost magnet ...interesting idea but not so sure about that fifth Iowa. Wikipedia states that Midway benefited from Montana class technology. Wikipedia's page on the Iowa class states, "Four were completed, two more were laid down but canceled in August 1945, at war's end, and both hulls were scrapped in 1958. "

    • @neurofiedyamato8763
      @neurofiedyamato8763 7 років тому +1

      USS Midway was not the fastest conventional carriers, they were only 33 knots. The Shokaku class were the fastest at 35 knots. US carriers rarely top 33 knots. Japanese fleet carriers preferred higher speed at 34 or 35 knots whenever possible.
      Midway however carried the largest amount of planes at 120 planes, so much in fact a single carrier had trouble commanding and handling them all. US enjoy having more planes, generally US carriers had more planes than other nations.

    To KreigsMeister27, The USS Maine original designation as a cruiser was purely political, even HMS Hood carried the label and the farce was carried out even after the Washington Naval Treaty in 1920. The definition of a Battleship was quite flexible and designating vessels as a cruiser was less provocative to the public even though it fooled no one.

    Very nice video. I enjoyed it very much as I enjoy United States Naval history. However, you should use spell check with your video editing. The USS Nebraska Nevada and Pennsylvania are all misspelled. No big deal just an observation. Thanks again.

    Being as how it's where I live, USS Indiana (both the submarine and the battleship) and USS Indianapolis are my favorites; I might be a bit biased though. You should read up on the Indianapolis, it's very tragic.

    Ok it says the Montana was not commissioned, but it didn't say the Montana or a sister ship was not built, most likley hidden in the Navy's Area 51, fitted with laser weapons and rail guns.

    One thing that always bothered me was that there was only one battleship named after Virginia, my home as well as the state which built a large portion of these ships. I guess I just have to settle with _Virginia_-class Ballistic Submarines

    • @The31stcenturyfox
      @The31stcenturyfox 7 років тому

      It's an attack submarine, not a ballistic missile submarine. Still a very nice class of vessel to have your State named after and there will be a lot of them.

    Are any of these old battle wagons still in existance? if they are Where are they and why don't we recomishion them again

    • @zxjim
      @zxjim 5 років тому +1

      Yes, but the last active ship was decommissioned in 1992, and the last two were removed from the reserve fleet in 2006. There are eight battleships that exist as memorials in various locations. (I've been on board the USS Massachusetts).
      We are likely to never commission them again because the cost of updating them to modern standards would exceed the cost of purchasing a new ship of similar capabilities which would be also be cheaper to operate.

    A very well presented slide show with fine music! Okay, I'm nit-picking here but you spelled Nevada as Navada. Of course many people here will mention that the USS Kentucky was 70% complete when construction was stopped. Kentucky then sat in drydock for the next 10 yrs before being scrapped. Because it was launched but not officially commissioned, it's not on the navy list. It's bow section was removed to repair the USS Wisconsin. The 1st USS Maine and 1st USS Texas could have been first and second, , but this was only because Congress had authorized two "coastal" warships, and not battleships. None the less, they were the first big gun ships the navy built.

      Only 'capital' ship that wasn't named for a state; I had thought she was the first 'modern' US battleship and that they'd settled on the state naming scheme immediately after. Only state that DIDN'T ultimately have a commissioned battleship named after it was Montana; the planned class of post-IOWA super battleships wasn't built.

    • @jkdm7653

      Kersage lived on longer than any other pre Dreadnaught. She was converted to a craine ship and served into the 50's. Even gave up her name to a Carrier
      By the way Kersage was probably named after the Civil War cruiser that defeated the C.S.S Alabama.
