While Theth is a small isolated village in the Albanian Alps, every visit one takes here is special, unique and wonderful - regardless of the season. The local residents are warm and welcoming - with cute pets and splendid food offerings! The Grunasi Waterfall is beautiful! The Blue Eye spring is also breathtaking. Alina, this is a fantastic place to get stuck in, any time: winter, spring, summer or fall!!!
@patjoni No - not really. It's more a coincidence rather than a similarity, that the masculine variant of Lithuanian first names and surnames end in 'ius' or 'as'. Because people of Greek heritage are more numerous than people of Lithuanian heritage, some may initially assume that Lithuanian masculine names are Greek names - when they are not. The Arvanitic, Greek and Lithuanian languages all belong to the Indo-European language family - all descending from ancient Proto-Indo-European. But these contemporary spoken languages are not mutually-comprehensible. Arvanitika is the variety of Albanian traditionally spoken by the Arvanites, a population group in Greece. Arvanitika is today endangered, as its speakers have been shifting to the use of Greek and most younger members of the community no longer speak it.
@patjoni I'm not sure that I understand the context of your initial posted reply question in this thread: "Were you surprised by the language similarity? Did you expect it?" I make no mention or reference to language in my initial post (above). In another thread, however, I was asked: "Are you an Avranites?". Thus, assumed that this was the context of your (above) questions to me.
@patjoni Thanks for your clarification! I'm not a linguist or language scholar. As a son of Lithuanian émigré parent born in Montréal, I am fluent in Lithuanian, English and French, with some modest German language skills. Having learned some Latin in secondary school (as part of my Catholic education), I also have some (reading) aptitude for the other Romance / Latin languages. It’s nice to meet you, Patjoni. Happy New Year! Bonne année! Su Naujaisiais metais!

What can I say? I absolutely adore this part of Albania!!! It somehow feels like home to me. Those mountains and valleys, waterfalls and streams, quaint homes and churches - just WOW!!!! Astounding beauty! Alina, you must go back in summer - see that family again. So majestic is this location on earth! I think if I could select a place for another lifetime, it would be here! Would you spend it with me? On another note: your perseverance, and that of your professional driver, paid off - maybe there’s a good reason he has a cross hanging from the rear-view mirror, LOL! God helps him! Can I say that maybe God is calling to you with the beauty of that whole experience in Theth? I feel a Godly love for you spiritual sister. May God richly bless your paths in the new year!!!!
If your heart ever did settle on this little town for a summer home, maybe you could set up a general store (sundries) with attached coffee shop! Not to take away the business from the trail guy. Maybe get the National Parks in Albania to set up a satellite dish to send and receive internet for the town. Or a hotspot in your coffee shop? BTW, did you see the “face” in the rock cliff above that stick built shop? Maybe better seen in the Instagram photo of him. I’m just “spitballing” ideas here, Alina. I wouldn’t expect you to take this seriously - because I know you don’t really care for the cold! LOL! But it’s fun using one’s imagination. Happy New Year! wherever you go😉❤️.
What a beautiful place! With its high mountain peaks, waterfalls and fresh water streams, good food and warm hospitality. We must say to be in "paradise". This region of Albania is a precious gem, which must be preserved like a treasure. Great video
Such a beautiful experience for her , I’m an Albanian living in USA and never been in Theth, it sure makes me visit some day despite the difficulties Alina had to show .Alina is such a positive beautiful young lady ! 🇦🇱
DEFINITELY go back in the summer! My husband and I were there in the Summer of 2018. We took a boat from the Skoder area to the Valbona area. We stayed at at hostel/guest house for a couple of days and then hiked the pass over to Theth. It's part of a trail that goes through several countries. It was an amazing hike that I'd recommend! Thanks for your video. It's awesome to see it in snow. Tou seem to be going to several places my husband and I went. Tour videos are making me feel "other home sick" because we loved Eastern Europe!
What better way to start the New Year than to watch another amazing video by Alina, filled with gorgeous drone shots, soulful music, and of course Alina's bright and cheerful presence! 😁✨ Theth looks like heaven with beautiful landscapes, especially the waterfall which is truly a sight to behold. The cute chickens and puppies were a cherry on top. The road leading to it looks picturesque and actually reminded me of my time in Himachal Pradesh, India (there's a mountain pass called Rohtang which looks similar). Fantastic work overall!
Never knew Albania has such an abundance of nature, thanks for sharing this vlog. A paradise for the hitchhikers, wow the way they cross the river, is itself an adventure. From India, Happy and Hopeful 2021 Alina!

The narrow snow covered road is so dangerous. It is definitely better in the summer. The village is tranquil and the area is beautiful, a good base for hiking. Thanks for the great video.
@Kristian Pepaj yeah they did remodel it but it wasn’t full destroyed. As well as the Kanun tower was mostly for men when they caused a murder they would be protect in their cause in a blood feud the woman and children and elderly are not involved
Well done Alina for making it to Theth during winter's time! You are the first one making a video about Theth in winter. Albania is not a cold country, but the mountainous areas can give you quite a surprise. You might get block from snow in a matter of two hours if you don't run as quick as you can, because the area is so remote and nobody bothers to go and clear the streets from the snow. You are lucky that they are in the process of building that road, otherwise with the previous one, you had no chance to pass by that minibus that got stuck. Consider your experience a unique one, no matter how scary it felt... Happy New Year Alina and I hope you enjoyed last night in Gjirokastra!
I sow your vidios. Good vlogs. You are amazing. I worked in albania for seven years like a bus driver. I know albania well, theth I been there many times. In thethi is not blue eye ,,, blue eye is only in saranda, in saranda the water comes from undergrad very deap no one know how deap is. In thethi you don't loese because people are nice, they are amazing. I'm Happy to sea lots of water ,,, in the summer don't have a lots water, don't look beautiful. Thanks for the vidio , you make the vidio more and more beautiful. God bless you, gratis from Vancouver british columbia.
I was so much waiting this video released😉Even I knew the result you drove through the snow mountain because of the nicest driver with 4x4 SUV. I love your new cutie friends🐶🐶🐶 And then the Blue eye is so beautiful as your eyes Alina😁
I was totally impressesed by the amazing view from the mountain. Your host Rita made you a delicious meal. My mouth watered seeing this amazing meal. I wish to live in those small houses near the mountain. It would be so peaceful with the wonderful scent of the nature. I was amazed seeing the small café house. The best part part was the gorgeous lake cascade. I would like to swim in it. I had visited several mountains. But this one was more thrilling. Don't worry i'll go there with a professional driver. Great camerawork. Wish you a happy new year. All the best.😘
This is up there in your top 10 videos, surprising after the way it started out! Must be the sage-green pants you've worn before, they suit you so well!
Robert Elsie, the famous German - Canadian Albanologist, was buried in Theth 2 years ago. His last wish was to be buried in these Albanian Alps ( far away from Canada).. That's how much he loved these areas.
Wow! What a harrowing adventure to get to such unbelievable and scenic nature!? I hike often in neighboring Harpers Ferry, W Va and that unbelievable place is a hiker's paradise! Thank you for another Visual Feast ...You are amazing! Happy and Blessed New Year, Alina!
Happy New Year Alina and yotubers! So far, the best video of your albanian series! Drone shots of the valley were magnificent. Gorgeous mountain views. Incredibly clear waters in the creeks and ponds. Friendly people and animals. Beauty of the nature together with your own and that sunny smile of yours, is such a stunning combination! Congratulations on the job well done.
You've got stuck on a mountain And I can't get out of it :) Can't stop admiring the work You've done. This amazing episode has everything: a genuine drama that, in your talented performance, smoothly flows into a comedy; panic attack that gives way to the sweetest one; the whole bunch of new cute little friends like a reward for all trials & the splendor of raw nature with three beautiful blue eyes... I think it wouldn`t be an exaggeration to say that this is the new cherry on your Albanian cake and one of your best videos in general. And this is a wonderful place where you definitely want to go back. Really hope that You will be able to compare your unique winter experience with summer one. Maybe next time, as a guest of honor, they will let You climb the bell tower of their lovely church and announce your return by ringing the bells (don`t forget to bring special earplugs) 😄 💙 Thank You so much for all your magical moments in which I want to get stuck! Happy New Year & New Decade to You & your growing UA-cam family! 💖 P.S.: I don't know why, probably mainly because of the music (it even seemed to me for a split second that the US anthem sounded in the ending 🤪), but besides the classical alpine one, I also felt a certain atmosphere of the Wild West. And looking at the cool little Conrad, I remembered the "The Ransom of Red Chief". But I think he's a much nicer young man than the main character of that O. Henry`s sad story 😅 Btw, guys, we have a great "Strictly Business" (1962) sort of anthology film directed by Leonid Gaidai (master of the comedy genre) based on three (again this number, You know :) short stories (one dramatic & two comedic) by O. Henry. You can find it here (unfortunately no English subtitles, but there is more action than words, although the dialogues are very funny too) - ua-cam.com/video/Y3TMti_iK28/v-deo.html
Now guys, do you understand how a small and a separate nation with it`s own language survived for thousands of years the assimilitanion from the great civilisations that surrounded us and defying all the greatest empires of the past who passed through our lands? A natural castle with the best soldiers inside. "Few people, however, knew that this little mountainous country had given rise to Roman legions, Roman emperors, Byzantine mercenaries and generals, grand viziers and Egyptian khedives, and that the pope had bestowed the title of “Defender of Christianity” upon Skanderbeg." [extract from: Hermann Neubacher, Sonderauftrag Südost 1940-45: Bericht eines fliegenden Diplomaten (Göttingen 1956), p. 105-121. Translated from the German by Robert Elsie.]

Hi... Alina... Happy New Year.... your so brave to do this task, excellent ...the place is so cool and terrific, amazing with a beautiful background music... I love this village in theth Albannia , good luck and God Bless You always, have a nice trip....
There's so much history in those Alps waiting to be discovered by proper and honest archaeologists and historians. The locals even claim that's where Noah landed in one of the mountains part of Albanian Alps called mountain top with iron bars! Name Ndue or Nue in nothern dialect is very popular in that region!
I must say Alina it definitely was an amazing and Beautiful adventure. Spectacular scenery and hiking. Loved it. The waterfalls are beautiful. Happy New Year Alina cheers
A wonderful adventure, and a beautiful area. It reminds me of some regions in my home province of British Columbia. Terrific video Alina. Thanks for sharing......
Hi Alina, Thank you for giving chance to reconsider the importance of mutual understanding beyond borders during COVIT-19 time. You made my day. Needless to say, we need to learn the wisdom of co-existence of our creatures much more from Balkan area. We always intend to stick our ideas. These wonderful mountainous villages of Albanian Alps are very attractive destinations for many visitors, in not only moderate seasons but harsh winter. It is a kind of paradise on earth. Keep up your challenging works. Stay safe & healthy!!

Alina you are a Canadian citizen. I wanted to tell you that somewhere near that church is buried a famous Canadian albanologist Robert Elsie. (Robert Elsie (June 29, 1950 - October 2, 2017) was a Canadian-born German scholar specializing in Albanian literature and folklore.) , In love with the beauties of this country, (just like the other famous British albanologist Edith Durham), whose last will was to rest in the Albanian Alps, in the village of Theth of Dukagjini

You know I always enjoy seeing the food prepared there and I have to tell you I hope I live long enough to go there for any time of the year but you are probably right summertime is even better but it's great you did it and both seasons well done, Alina!! CHEERS!!!!
I'm from Vancouver Island. I've driven in the winter in Saskatchewan, and in the Olympic Mountain passes in Washington state.....Saskatchewan is easy peasy as long as you can see the road :) Mountain passes are like luge tracks!
@@Chahlie , yeah, I agree: Saskatchewan is a lot of flat to rolling prairie. I have lived in Midwest USA much of my life, and driven in the same “flat” terrain. The concerns in prairie driving is blizzard-like wind and blowing snow, snowdrifts, along with icy roads, causing “whiteout” visibility and vehicles sliding off from roadways. It can be treacherous and deadly for the unprepared driver. In mountainous driving, 4-wheel drive and chains are essential on underdeveloped gravel and rocky roads, and steeper slopes. From all appearances, Alina’s driver was well prepared and had past experience with this road condition - he was the brother of her host family’s matriarch, and although we don’t know precisely, may have grown up there. Alina was probably panicked by the fact that other vehicles were not prepared and it may have portended a stranding in inhospitable winter cold - she doesn’t like cold, for sure, though she grew up a small town in Saskatchewan. The steeper slopes of the road likely frightened her - you certainly don’t want to slide off the side of a mountain. To show just what a sweetheart Alina is, she even offered to pay the driver the full amount to turn around for safety, if he wished. Funny, either he thought she was offering extra pay to get her there (poor English to Albanian translation), or he was thinking “no worries, this is easy peasy for my rig”. I just love Alina - she shows us her emotions and vulnerability in the moment.

@Kristian Pepaj yeah they did remodel it but it wasn’t full destroyed. As well as the Kanun tower was mostly for men when they caused a murder they would be protect in their cause in a blood feud the woman and children and elderly are not involved
@Kristian Pepaj no just the husband because the women and children and elderly aren’t involved only the man because the man committed the murder
Bravo!!! No doubt you are a very brave girl with strong nerves. Would that I had been with you!!!
Enjoyed the video, Love the scenery. Thank youuu Alina 😀
What a great adventure Alina ! Absolutely stunning and I think I may head to Albania soon if borders are open. Stay warm and safe.
An mountain village lost in time, what an amazing way to spend New Years
Well done Alina for making it to Theth during winter's time!
Yes Thethi is beautiful even in winter. We hope they finish the road they started
Thank you! It was a very special experience :)
I am an avid traveller but have never to Albania. Now Albania is in my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your video Alina ! Just awesome.
Glad you were in good hands 🤗💕
Playing amazing grace at the end 😅😁✨✨
Once again, spectacular videography (and editing). So impressive.
Thank you very much!
@@AlinaMcleod I say this as someone who works in the field. 🎬🎥👍🏻
I was so much waiting this video released😉Even I knew the result you drove through the snow mountain because of the nicest driver with 4x4 SUV. I love your new cutie friends🐶🐶🐶 And then the Blue eye is so beautiful as your eyes Alina😁
Thank you very much! :D
Thank you very much!
Thank you! 😃
Great video and great music, thanks for this inspiration
Thanks Alina, for this beautiful footage, have a great time!
Watched the entire video. The important thing is you're safe then i have to say it was a beautiful experience. Thank You.
You've got stuck on a mountain
And I can't get out of it :)
Can't stop admiring the work You've done. 💖
P.S.: I don't know why, probably mainly because of the music (it even seemed to me for a split second that the US anthem sounded in the ending 🤪), but besides the classical alpine one, I also felt a certain atmosphere of the Wild West.
"Few people, however, knew that this little mountainous country had given rise to Roman legions, Roman emperors, Byzantine mercenaries and generals, grand viziers and Egyptian khedives, and that the pope had bestowed the title of “Defender of Christianity” upon Skanderbeg."
[extract from: Hermann Neubacher, Sonderauftrag Südost 1940-45: Bericht eines fliegenden Diplomaten (Göttingen 1956), p. 105-121. Translated from the German by Robert Elsie.]
This village and its surroundings look like a place straight out of a Harry Potter novel. Amazingly beautiful and your photography captured this area perfectly Alina ! I hope that you returned again and that we will enjoy another adventure with you ! 😃😃👍👍
Really enjoyed this video. Those mountains are amazing !!
Alina, thank you for taking me to these beautiful Albanian places, which I, an Albanian, haven't had a chance to visit.
My pleasure 😊
This little adventure will always be in your memories though....no need to worry so much :) This village looks like a hidden gem for sure! Seeing your smile is a great way to start new year. Great video, greetings from Greece!

You have to come in spring in this part of Albania..Qafe Thore is amazing
There's so much history in those Alps waiting to be discovered by proper and honest archaeologists and historians. The locals even claim that's where Noah landed in one of the mountains part of Albanian Alps called mountain top with iron bars! Name Ndue or Nue in nothern dialect is very popular in that region!
Enjoyed your video, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Alina
PREKRASNA ALINU ..THANK YOU FOR VIDEO

There’s another place in Albania called blue eye in Saranda in the South but this is beautiful cos water comes out of the ground and doesn’t stop.
A wonderful adventure, and a beautiful area. It reminds me of some regions in my home province of British Columbia.
Terrific video Alina. Thanks for sharing......
It's very much like New Denver/Kaslo
It was 100F when I cycled through the Albanian mountains in summer 2019, and I suffered accordingly. I think spring or fall would be your best bet.
Beautiful place. Quite a challenge getting there it looks like. Your cheerful personality and the background music makes it very interesting video.
They are in the process of building that road. Next year will be finished and maybe easier to get over there.
A Beautiful place Wow! Luv&Peace from Sask Canada! Happy new year Alina!
**LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SWEET LADY!!!**
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Hi Alina,
Thank you for giving chance to reconsider the importance of mutual understanding beyond borders during COVIT-19 time.
Thank you very much :)

Nice video again. Thanks ! And a good 2021 to you !
Thank you! Same to you!
What a wonderful place 💕 love it
Alina you are a Canadian citizen. I wanted to tell you that somewhere near that church is buried a famous Canadian albanologist Robert Elsie.
(Robert Elsie (June 29, 1950 - October 2, 2017) was a Canadian-born German scholar specializing in Albanian literature and folklore.)
, In love with the beauties of this country, (just like the other famous British albanologist Edith Durham), whose last will was to rest in the Albanian Alps, in the village of Theth of Dukagjini
Cool, Bet it would be really Fun to visit in the Summer. Swimming in the pools and streams.
Happy New Years Alina. Thanks my Lady. 🙏👍✌😎
Wow. Great little trip, and such an unexpected and fulfilling outcome. Awesome.
Why are you certainly father good one there didn't you? Words to not come close to explain to anyone what is there and what you saw I hope you say that in your most precious video Bank you have!! You know I always enjoy seeing the food prepared there and I have to tell you I hope I live long enough to go there for any time of the year but you are probably right summertime is even better but it's great you did it and both seasons well done, Alina!! CHEERS!!!!
Absolutely! Truly a beautiful place.
Yes, summer is the best time 😍🥰
Come on - You’re Canadian. You should not be freaking out about this.
Beautiful and peaceful,..... Happy New Year!
As a photographer.. I am seeing so many awesome landscape shots in this episode!
