He was among the Joes I bought at a yardsale for my son. He used him as a desert ninja. We did rent a video from the DIC era and I remember the diggers being on the Scorpion's ankles. I thought he was a cool figure.
All those poor Desert Scorpions are going to get sunburns on their uncovered arms, unlike Dusty.
poor hearing and burn marks from launching rockets over there ears and machingun over the other one. they also have to be pretty fit to lug that monster backpack that thing has to way half a ton
My run with GI Joe mostly ran from 1987 to 1992. By 1992, I was 14 years old and that's pretty much the end of playing with childhood toys. I don't remember the exact last figure I got, but I don't remember owning any 1993 figures.
One of my favorite Cobra figures, a close second was Annihilators.
The Desert Scorpion trooper, with exploding tangerine oranges!
Great review! Like Retroblasting said, you put in a lot of work to bring us honest and thorough reviews. I also appreciate how Mrs. HCC788 helps out.
I am surprised that there was no mention how Desert Scorpion looks a lot like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.
Funny enough, the Desert Scorpion predated Mortal Kombat Scorpion by a couple of years.
When Hasbro did Mortal Kombat figures, the even included the scorpion from this set with him.
Man, this figure was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Thank you for the well-made video giving this awesome character the credit is due.
Great review! Loved this guy as a kid.
The mutant scorpion is a very BIG BIG! ;-p
Great review of the Desert Scorpion, it is one awesome action figure.
This is an awesome figure. For some reason I thought he was earlier in the line.I really dig the back story also and that the vipers are like the lowest of the low.I guess the biggest punishment they faced was having to wear the garish neon colored uniforms.A cool line of Joe figures would be a post apocalyptic line with Zombies ala Fallout ,maybe this is where the rad scorpion would fit in nicely as well as figures like road pig and the other mad max inspired figures like Zartans crew.
1991 was the end of the line
I like to think in the giant scorpion as a robot drone, so as with the modern version of the Desert Scorpion.
Nah, just a big scorpion.
Was cool we got these right on the cusp of the Desert Storm days!
You know I was never a huge Gi Joe collector in fact my experiences with the toys were through my friends (I was/am more of a transformer guy) but I love these reviews
Definitely a great figure
The Eels and the snow serpents were released before the word vipers were over used there was the tele-viper but fans at the time probably thought it just went with serpents and eels.
I think 1992 should really be called the first year of "90's Joes" for the fact the time from designing a figure to actual production and on the store shelves is at least 1-2 years for that time-frame.
The diggers go on his legs. There was an episode with several of them hunting Dusty and they would often burrow underground to hide.
Being sent to a arid sandy tactical position with minimal covering and no water? Yeah, I can see that as a punishment. Even if you are also issued a personal giant mutant arachnid. Real or robot. It's a guarantee it, or one of the others in the unit, will give you such a pinch!
The "yellow underwear" is probably just the continuation of his yellow shirt, I'd imagine.
Thanks a lot last time I spotted this figure on 94 in Poland ...
GET OVER HERE!!!🦂🦂
SCORPION WIN! 🦂💥🔥
Blam! Susan's getting pretty deadly with firearms! :)
If I saw a scorpion that big I’d be running for the nearest airport fuck that!
bought this guy because he was on the box art of the Cobra Paralyzer
Desert Scorpion was one of my favorite Cobra troopers. Never understood the digger gauntlets either and thought they fit better on his feet then his wrists.
It looks like idea is that the little slaw things extend like a mole's claws.
Another outstanding and helpful review brother thank you!
Just found your channel. Love it. Such nostalgia for me.
Predator inspired gi joe🤘🏼i dig it
The naming convention "-viper" lets you know this isnt an individual character with its own individual personality just a foot soldier/ army builder.
That file card is based on actual military experience then general population would know!
7:25 As both a GI Joe and Gundam fan I say those things working like the desert Zaku.
Speculation, but the reason they don't have water is because they're self-interested and unreliable troopers with a discipline problem. The water is all held by the quartermaster who rations it out as needed. This ensures that the impulsive soldiers don't land up using it all up, and gives the command a means to keep the unruly troops on their best behaviour.
As for the tattoo, there are no other cobra troopers in the classic line with bare upper arms... there are some individuals like Big Boa, Croc Master, Copperhead, Dr Mindbender and Raptor, but no other troopers. It could be that all the members of the rank and file have that tattoo, but it's only visible on the Scorpions.
And might I add, all rank and file Cobras have mustaches, but they're only visible on Rock Vipers. Haha!
@@G7M9W This is completely true! They're only required to shave if they transfer to the Tele-viper, SAW viper or Sea Slug branches!
@@bravesirkevin Well, it could be worse. They could be Ice Vipers... If you know, you know!
I think those digger devices have a spinning rotary blades so they help the Desert Scorpion to dig in as it where. least that how I saw them being use. the Desert scorpion is one my fav vintage figures . but it was a huge disappointment that it was a club exclusive for the modern era as the prices on those are insanely high on the after market .
Never knew of this figure. Definitely one of the better looking ones from the 90s!
one of my absolute favs!
Another great review HCC. I think the DS is one of the coolest characters in the line very much climatewise the other end of the spectrum from the fantastic Snow Serpent 2...🦂
Was definitely one of my of my favourites along with the rock viper. Still have mine from childhood complete and in pretty good condition
Awesome video. Also, almost forgot about that intro, freaking hilarious!!!😂😂
The yellow is meant to be a one piece i think. Like a wrestler
Awesome figure!! He's one of my favorites and part of my small collection. Greetings from Guatemala!!!
Don't mess with Susan
I think that the digger devices send out some kind of energy or sonic wave that breaks up dirt and sand so he can quickly make a hole to hide in until a enemy vehicle or soldier passes by.
Then boom, a missile takes out your Jeep and you’re sprayed with bullets.
And the entire time he’s safely down in his foxhole.
I can't help but be reminded by another, more famous Scorpion with this figure. I believe he predates or is contemporary with the Mortal Kombat interpretation...
Fun fact: Desert Scorpion's scorpion was included with the MK Scorpion years later when Hasbro did MK figures.
The yellow looks like a unitard, but generally a really good looking figure.
This is so painfully close to being a great figure. He actually is almost camouflaged. The weapons system is really cool and I can just about imagine that his yellowish is actually a desert tan. He has too much black on him and I think I'd prefer him with a proper jacket than going sleeveless in all that sun. The head/helmet looks amazing.
I do agree with you that a dedicated desert specialist should be an elite unit an not a punishment outfit for bad Vipers.
The revenge of yellow panties! With a repaint and better accessories it might be a top tier figure IMO
I agree, the accessories baring the machine pistol are a bit of a letdown. As HCC 788 pointed out, a backpack with a canteen would have been a logical choice for this action figure.
Just purchased this guy incomplete. I'll give him a tan backpack and an ak-47 😎😎😎 I actually have a black major giant scorpion accessory if I wanna pair em up. Lol 😂😂
That guy came with a lot of extra stuff. You really got your money's worth. I found the non-articulated animal statues to not be my jam. I mean I have Polly but what am I supposed to do with her? Just leave her on Shipwreck's arm?
LOL! That would be my luck. 😂
"Ha ha-a! Gotcha!" *BLAM!*
HCC788, I've always been wondering were you get the stats that you give with each toy review?
Great video Commander let me know about what you wanna do for Formbx257
So would you consider this being a top tier figure?
Well I hope you learned a lesson, never scare your wife when she has a loaded gun, an accident could happen, at least that's what she'll use as a defense, great review, but you missed an important part in the review, the giant scorpion made a appearance in the dic episode general confusion where Dusty and sandstorm fight the desert scorpion and giant scorpion, oh well, maybe next time you can make that correction when reviewing dusty v3.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the scorpion is meant to be giant.
What are those miniatures at the beginning ?
They look amazing.
I also spotted a wee typo, it says scorpoin when the desert vehicle appears.
Great review though.
The miniatures are from my Nightmare Before Christmas village I've had for ages.
@@susanlower9932 Excellent, thanks.
Were there any other Cobra Troopers with bare arms?
I agree that if the yellow had been tan (and the waist piece black), it would have been a very good figure instead of just a good one. His Predator weapon system was really cool. The cloth piece was excellent (a feature on Dusty v1 that made him one of my favorites as a kid). My brother and I always connected the diggers to the figure's ankles. We figured they'd use the ankle diggers to "sink" in to the sand and the pop up to ambush the Joes like in the DiC cartoon. As for the tattoo, given that the unit was supposed to be a punishment, maybe it's a "mark of Cain" brand for those demoted to their ranks.
Giant scorpions? They just need to add giant spiders as well and no one would go into the desert.
I would like to have this figure growing up and they would use the desert scorpion vehicle like more than one or two of them and throw in a couple of fingers at my grandparents gave me when we came back Minnesota i still remember a lot of that grown up
When Mrs hcc 788 shot him...just a flesh wound
I'd have to disagree Firefly had really good camouflage
Similar story, my brother knifed my scorpion toy cuz he thought it was a real. 😢
Wow she doesn't have a much of a scent of humor does she?
