Only just discovered this plugin, downloaded the demo less than a week ago and purchased after two days of use. OMG what a game changer. I come from an analogue background and I've got to say this has got to be the most intelligent and incredibly useful tool EVER since the discovery of tape, to hit the audio industry. Probably the reason it took so long for me discover this is because I'm just not in the market for any more EQs, compressors, reverbs etc, I thought I had everything I'd need for the foreseeable, until this. Wow! Great Job Soundtheory👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I like that you used it as a search tool to identify problem frequencies, insanely helpful and time saving. Also ear-stamina saving so I don't have to "sweep" for 10 minutes on my channel eq and get sick of the track
Update: I ended up buying it. It can polish things up a bit, if used very gently on the master bus. On individual instruments, it's a matter of taste. It tends to make things brighter in its neutral process, but you can adjust it to fit what you want. Excluding top or bottom is sometimes called for as well. It won't automatically mix for you. It just takes what you've got and gives it a little HD clarity. If you overuse it, it can mangle everything. It can take away the impact of the low end especially.
Been using the trial for a few days and purchased it (Windows, ofc) yesterday. It's particularly fantastic for taming orchestra section resonances as the resonances can vary wildly from note to note in a way that electric guitars and synths just don't (at least not to the same extent). I'm currently using it on full section stems (so brass would be trumpet, horns, trombone, low brass). In combination with static EQ cuts and boosts it's amazing. Definitely the best plugin I've used in some years.

Nice presentation; well done! I have been working with Gullfoss for a few days and it really is a unique plugin indeed. I cannot imagine what their next plugin will be?
If this does what I think it's doing - namely, forcing stuff to comply with a generic pleasant-sounding curve, maybe some kind of filtered pink noise - it's a very good idea. At any rate, the examples here sound great.
I can hear it at 12:25 That would give trouble to fix manually but some of the ones before didn't give me much. For phasing it does seem to help. I think I would find the 500k issue by sweeping like you did. still too much essing for me . Way impressive on the final mix.
I'm mostly wondering where you would place this: random channels or the master bus? More inclined to use it "as intended". The objective in mixing is to make the mix sound good. If I get a flat and blanketless/crisp response from every instrument after having used Gullfoss on individual channels, the subsequent crowd control might be harder. Dylan here - that would be awesome! I'll have to do some more research on the rest, but I know that would make everyone's life a lot easier when it comes to picking the right one for you...
I have some issues with this taking and recover levels. Found it difficult. For me placing it on aux as a send adding 25/25% for both and adding to taste works better for me.
@no signal I'm using it on high level busses, and the mix buss. SO, Drums get an instance, Electric Guitars get an instance, Strings get an instance, Vocals, etc... As for some practical tips, I talk about a few different techniques for hearing problem areas in the frequency spectrum in this article: www.musicianonamission.com/approach-equalization-two-types-eq/
Does the final mix on the master track include the Gullfoss effect on the individual instruments as well? Or can treatment of each individual track be skipped and have the plugin work just on the overall mix?
This sounds like it could be a real time saver. I wonder if like with Soothe, you could get even more interesting results by pre-emphasizing or cleaning up the source manually.

You need both Soothe and Gullfoss. It took 15 years of VSTfx 1.4/2.x+ releases to finally get to a home studio De-Digital --> Analog warm pristineness solution to finally get this into non-official studio hands!!!!
I think its interesting to see, a lot of the online reviews of this plugin (also from reputable magazines) turn to the narrative of it being a fast fix for lazy and/or rookie mixing engineers. What is your take on this, Dylan? Is there some truth to this, or are they being snobbish?
Dylan here - I think a lot of engineers in the industry are hesitant to accept change. So if you're someone who's an analog purist, a brand new concept like Intelligent EQs can go against "the right way" to mix. While I absolutely don't think it should be a substitute for an actual EQ, it can make instruments sound SO much better than they did before. And really, the whole point of mixing is to get a get sound! So it doesn't matter if its a new, easier technology or not. I'm all for it.
@@masteringcom I watched another tutorial where a guy (very respected, and talented, and I follow his advice a LOT) who doesn't like "fixing" things on the mix buss, put this on his mix buss to locate problems, then spent the rest of the video "fixing" the problems on individual tracks. After 45 minutes, his mix sounded exactly like he had it sounding in 45 seconds just using the plugin. I'm like - "why?"
What you failed to show, was how Gullfoss balances it all. The gage is on the left hand side in the middle the two vertical lines. When they show below the mid line, that means the tame is accentuated, above the mid line is where the recover is,, the object is to get them to be equal on both sides of the mid line. That's how you balance your mix properly.
Dylan here - that's not a bad idea! I'll give it some thought. :) The ones that come to mind immediately are the Oxford Inflator for making your sounds louder and the (free!) Slate Revival to add some top end and low end to tracks. Also, I'm a big fan of the Waves Vocal/Bass Rider for gain automation and any good 'ol LA2A compressor for vocals and bass.
@@masteringcom SPL Vitalizer and Logic Vintage Tube EQ are stand outs for me. FabFilter Pro-Q3 is amazing, particularly once you get to grips with the new Dynamic EQ and EQ Matching functions. FabFilter Saturn so versatile for saturation, including on mix bus (try the Warm Tape setting)
I've only started demo-ing it tonight, but I'm not sure I like it. The feeling I'm getting is that you may call it a "good-er-izer", but you could also call it a "generic-izer". In other words, it kind of makes everything sound the same. It does seem like it works, well enough to not destroy anything if you don't go crazy with it, and I haven't totally gotten a feel for the controls yet. But it seems like it can kind of take the life out of your mix and make it boring. Like some consumer audio equipment or Apple Music/Spotify have preset EQ settings...this is maybe only slightly better than that... Not my final judgment, but that's the way I'm leaning.
You make a good point, I was thinking the same. If its always using the shape for the ear goodness, so then isn't it always shoving all within that same pocket of the spectrum all the time?
Good video and demo! I think the electric guitar fills are a bit hammy but that's someone's creative decision which has nothing to do with the plugin - a chacun son gout. Anyway, thanks for putting the vid together. I'm off to get the trial.
Kyle Devine yeah, if I were the producer, we would have recorded another take. Either her mic technique is bad (too close to it, no pop filter, etc.) or her mic is not a good match for her voice. NO plugin can fix the bad I'm hearing in that vocal.
I was gonna make a funny when he said phase issues on his mono track but once he located that 500hz res issue and showed using the plug as a good tool to figure problems out...Me likey! Obviously he has rehearsed a little to make a good informative video. I'm on the edge of buying this plugin. Eqing is a weakness for me and I'm getting better but this will fix my weakness quick and or expedite...Maybe. Everywhere I go I will need to it with me to help....Haaa.
I think it was a mono track recorded with multiple microphones...in other words, it fixed phasing issues that were baked into a mono mixdown. Unless I misunderstood.
Thanks for the video. This is seriously the closest thing to a miracle worker that I've ever seen (or heard.) I straight away bought it and it makes a huge difference to my mixes, not to mention making my guitars sound better... Also now I finally know what the hell a De-esser is, that one was previously a mystery to me. :D I've never recorded vocals before.
I got it and its great. Some might think that IEQ is cheating. Well, I'm only an by engineer necessity. I'm a songwriter, and I was to have great sounding recordings. That's my goal. Whatever it takes. So I'm not bad at mixing, but Gullfoss, developed by quantum physicists, is way smarter than me, and I love it.
It does seem like it lets the right frequencies shine through. Weird. But yes it really balances the sound. So it removes bad frequencies. I am wondering how this plugin can do this. It’s like you would have to have thousands of instances of ai built into it.
Dylan here - Absolutely. This is an automatic frequency balancer, not a tone shaper. This is meant to improve the *technical* sound of the instrument. The Gullfoss frees you up to make creative decisions with your EQs instead!
@@masteringcom So would you recommend putting it at the beginning or end of the chain? ie would you use gullfoss first, then shape with EQ or the other way round? Cheers Dylan :)
Tommy Coyle Here’s what I found from using the demo. Works best at the beginning of the chain of a single instrument’s track. It seems to be confused by effects and when I place it on a buss. It seems to straighten itself out eventually but it can take awhile. Maybe there is some sort of reset switch I’m missing. Anyway because of this it is not useful in my work flow.
This reminds me a lot of what OTT does when mixed at 10-20%. But this doesn't bring up the noise floor. Could definitely see it being useful but I bet it just destroys CPU

When they show below the mid line, that means the tame is accentuated, above the mid line is where the recover is,, the object is to get them to be equal on both sides of the mid line. That's how you balance your mix properly.
Good tip!
are you saying I can use this practically on every track in the mix? :)
Quantum musicians, don't hear that every day.
So what other plugins do you class as "instant good-er-izer" ? Maybe a video on those? :)
Dylan here - that's not a bad idea! I'll give it some thought. :)
The ones that come to mind immediately are the Oxford Inflator for making your sounds louder and the (free!) Slate Revival to add some top end and low end to tracks.
Is this better then Soothe by oeksound?
I'd suggest using it to clean individual tracks to get a super balanced starting point. I don't think I like this on the whole mix.
Very informative thanks for the tips and btw what editing software you use to edit
Logic Pro X
I still can’t understand the lyrics in the intro jingle
This is amazing!!!!
Good video and demo! I think the electric guitar fills are a bit hammy but that's someone's creative decision which has nothing to do with the plugin - a chacun son gout. Anyway, thanks for putting the vid together. I'm off to get the trial.
great tutorial thank you. Didn't think it did that great on her vocal take but to be fair those vocals are pretty sibilant.
:D I've never recorded vocals before.
thanks a lot !!
It’s like you would have to have thousands of instances of ai built into it.
when de essing i had the feeling that it also made the vocal less airy apart from the SSSS ducking
Nice video . Please check volume of the guitar track it seems very loud in the mix. Just wanted to point it out.
This looks amazing. So is there any point in EQing manually anymore?!
Yes, there is. judging from this demonstration, this helps you track down problem area's of a mix and you can then fine tune it with EQ
@@masteringcom In the video you describe the Brighten and Boost controls as being for tone-shaping, so you've contradicted yourself somewhat
AMAZING!!!
😧 mix bus application will be insane if used correctly…
It will completely change your decision making in the full mixing processing!!!
Can this be run without ilok?
No, unfortunately it requires an iLok to run.
Yea
SOLD!!!
This reminds me a lot of what OTT does when mixed at 10-20%. But this doesn't bring up the noise floor. Could definitely see it being useful but I bet it just destroys CPU
I preferred the non-dessed vocal. The plugin makes her sound more lispy.
....so that's why I recommended OEKsound's Soothe for this demo.
good, Thanks boy
