TITLE: Brush Up Your Shakespeare
Lyrics and Chords
[Kiss Me Kate]
The girls today in society go for classical poetry
So to win their hearts one must quote with ease
Aeschylus and Euripides
One must know Homer, and believe me, Beau
Sophocles, also Sappho-ho
Unless you know Shelley and Keats and Pope
Dainty Debbies will call you a dope
/ D - - A / - - / - D / - - / - A / - - / - D /
But the poet of them all
Who will start 'em simply ravin'
Is the poet people call
The Bard of Stratford on Avon
/ AD A / / / E A /
{Refrain}
Brush up your Shakespeare
Start quoting him now
Brush up your Shakespeare
And the women you will wow
/ DB7 E7 / A7 D / G D / E7 A7 /
Just declaim a few lines from Othella
And they'll think you're a hell of a fella
If your blonde won't respond when you flatter 'er
Tell her what Tony told Cleopatterer
If she fights when her clothes you are mussing
What are clothes? Much ado about nussing
Brush up your Shakespeare
And they'll all kow-tow
/ " / " / DB7 E7 / A D /
{Refrain}
With the wife of the British ambessida
Try a crack out of Troilus and Cressida
If she says she won't buy it or tike it
Make her tike it, what's more As You Like It
If she says your behavior is heinous
Kick her right in the Coriolanus
Brush up your Shakespeare
And they'll all kow-tow
{Refrain}
If you can't be a ham and do Hamlet
They will not give a damn or a damlet
Just recite an occasional sonnet
And your lap'll have honey upon it
When your baby is pleading for pleasure
Let her sample your Measure for Measure
Brush up your Shakespeare
And they'll all kow-tow - Forsooth
And they'll all kow-tow - I' faith
And they'll all kow-tow
... / A D / DA D / /
{Refrain}
Better mention "The Merchant Of Venice"
When her sweet pound o' flesh you would menace
If her virtue, at first, she defends---well
Just remind her that "All's Well That Ends Well"
And if still she won't give you a bonus
You know what Venus got from Adonis
Brush up your Shakespeare
And they'll all kow-tow - Thinkst thou?
And they'll all kow-tow - Odds bodkins
And they'll all kow-tow
{Refrain}
If your goil is a Washington Heights dream
Treat the kid to "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
If she then wants an all-by-herself night
Let her rest ev'ry 'leventh or "Twelfth Night"
If because of your heat she gets huffy
Simply play on and "Lay on, Macduffy!"
Brush up your Shakespeare
And they'll all kow-tow - Forsooth
And they'll all kow-tow - Thinkst thou?
And they'll all kow-tow - We trou'
And they'll all kow-tow
Cole Porter--as good as any songwriter who has ever lived.
This is actually Lee Wilkof and Michael Mulheren, recreating their turn from the 1999 Broadway revival.
+ScuffedShoes Thanks!
I saw that revival. They were great 25 years ago and memorialized forever on UA-cam. "And they'll all Cow Tow!" 🎼🎶🎵
I'm shaking in my boots as I practice to this number at my local Community Playhouse
Well done.
How did it go?
I kow-tow to Cole Porter. One his very best, a pleasure to listedn to, especially if one loves Shakespeare. Forsooth!
Man, that is so good. This is a totally slick and polished performance- and the lyrics are superbly clever.
I caught this production on broadway back in 2001 and these two stole the show!
Saw this in Sheffield the other night, it was a song my mother always talked about and it was a little bit special to see it live. Forsooth.
COLE PORTER: THE BROADWAY MASTER !
This is always the show-stopper. It's sad that they cut some of the more "risque" verses from the movie version - but that's how they did things in the 1950's.
This song's so well written, wish I could do the whole thing onstage.
i love this song-- and this performance is awesome. every precise movement is timed perfectly!
This is just magnificent! I love the word play and these gentlemen pull it off so well!
Can't really think of how you can perform this number better - absolutely hilarious!
Love it! The word discussion of 'bardolatry' sent me here - really glad it did.
I saw that show too! They were excelent! What I loved about broadway was after the play was over, the actors were right outside the theater mixed with everyone else. I recognised him though and told him he stole the show ;]
This is real STAGECRAFT!
Thank you Mr. Porter.
I love the subtle humor in this.
Subtle??
Brian Kane some of it is. Shrug
Sampling one’s “measure for measure” is indeed very subtle. Forsooth!
I've only heard the movie verion. This is great! Did they mention EVERYTHING in the canon? If not, they sure came close to it. Even the sonnets and other misc poems.
I have to memorize and sing this for drama class
Wonderful!
my show choir is doing this...but we are doing it in 3 different parts...throughout the entire show...we just randomly come onstage singing and dancing...it's fun!
A very enjoyable performance. Lots of fun!
did this in musical theatre it was awesome
Tthese guys are really good
That is Michael McCormick in the video, not Lee Wilkof. They both played the role of First Man in the revival on Broadway.
im having to do this in my theatre next week with my frend dan.
its such a fun song to sing and the corography is brilliant.
i just really hope i do it justice. :\
wish someone had Cole doing this!
Brilliant stage type show.TY C.
Great!
i forgot how long this song was. but still very funny.
I got the part of Sal in kiss me Kate.. These guys are so funny! I'm defiantly using this as inspiration when I'm on stage. Now the only problem is, how am i gonna sing that low? haha :)
Awesome! thanks for posting :)
This is so fucking cool.
guys, watch this!
It's gonna be a great day after all this good stuff.
me and my friend have to do this song in our final production show for college. I hope we can do it justice :)
13 plays and two poems mentioned (Sonnet and Venus and Adonis).
i have this for my school assambly XD
ahhh! i'mplaying 2nd gangster in our school musical. i hope i can be that good :/
Anyone know who the shorter guy is? It's NOT Lee Wilkoff.
x number of dislikes don't know any Shakespeare.
michael mulheren was, but not michael mccormick. it was actually lee wilkof..... my mistake on the mccormick guy
we got to dress up as nerds and fools and dance DX lol might be fun!?
That was fuckin amazing!
Nice rendition, but can't beat Keenan Wynn and James Whitmore in the movie version.
Subtle????!
lol oh paul gemignani
sing?
Cursed be he that moves my dislike bar
Wonderful!
