Amazing to learn this video exists. Andy Summers is a really good player but Ollie Halsall is just ridiculous. He's obviously better here, even sticking to the blues. He could have done a lot more
I feel this video captures a subtle, sad sea change in pop guitar approach, transitioning from the 1970s “every note should count”, no-BS, modernist model (that produced Ollie), to a glitzier, proto-postmodern “try to fit in wherever you can” ‘80s kitchen-sink ethos (as evinced by synth chick, neon/graffiti background, pastels, sequins, etc.). Ollie no doubt sensed this, and while Andy plays it safe (between his dress and standard minor-pentatonic noodling), Ollie amuses himself by toying with him. What else could he have done, really, with things spinning so fast out of control like that? - Heck, I sense the confusion from here (2020)!
A superb chord player(Andy Summers) vs a monster line player (Ollie) wasn’t much of a dual, that was fair. However, I betcha Ollie wished he had a sold a pimple on a donkeys ass amount of albums The Police sold.
True, but I bet you good ole Ollie wishes he sold a pimple on a donkey’s ass amount of albums the Police sold. So you see sir all that guitar slinging doesn’t mean dick. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds would agree with me.
It does not matter how good you are, if you kick sand in the face of the main musician in the band by outgunning them, you will quickly find yourself out of work and looking for another band. Andy is not stupid here and knows his position in this particular band.
@@EgoShredder Exactly. Andy knew that on the other side he had a genius. Dude, Andy was a good musician but nothing out of the curve, except when he played with Police and showed his guitar with a beautiful personality. But if you look before, for example he playing with Kevin Coyne, you will see that he was just one more. On the other hand, if you research Ollie, you'll find out why even Allan Holdsworth respected him.
@@Seventysongs Allan Holdsworth is arguable the greatest guitarist of all time of any genre, and a very capable violinist. He also lived within walking distance of me here in England, although I would have been too young to know at the time in the early 1970s.
Andy does his best to hang in there, but Ollie was a guitar giant.
My thoughts exactly!

Sting would have been f*cked had he not met Andy Summers!
Andy's a fantastic guitarist. Ollie's a madman!
Exactly There's a bingo !
Hard to believe these two guys and Mike Oldfield all played in Kevin Ayers bands. He sure knew how to pick em
Very brave going string to string with ollie Halsall 👏
Poor any guitarist who stands opposite Ollie Halsall. Ollie was being kind to Andy Summers, he could have made him change his career.
Huh?
@Golden Knight Halsall was a genius
@Golden Knight oh but I do
@Golden Knight give us some of your superior knowledge
@Golden Knight you started it moron
Whats going on, on the keyboard?
Ollie Halsall🎸🔥

@@Seventysongs what?
@@seethoseareyourtearsman.1758 Sorry, your "name" confuses me.
I really agree with you, ollie was quite a lunatic playing, and thats great
Ollie’s playing was so incredibly precise and clear, and those speeds it’s unreal. What an amazing talent he was.👍
Not so much a duel as it is just cool.
Ya ever think that Summers was being tastefully restrained to showcase Halsall? Andy is a major talent...Fripp played with em!
Fripp played with them both. Summers got a nice tone here
Ah yes, the Blue Traffs.
what is called "guitar wank" amongst real musicians
Sweet Jesus Ollie. Laying waste...
I don't know where he lived but Halsall should have a blue plaque.
From Southport.
andy sommers excellent guitar work!
Ollie is fantastic!
That is I think Zanna Gregmar on keys. My vocal coach!

What’s this from?
Check out bbc tempest show when both halsall and Holdsworth we're in the band. A closer match than summers
Ollie wipes the floor with Andy
Not a nice thing to say, but soooo true!!!

Ollie is holding back
Andy's got huge balls for even being up there, but Ollie takes it pretty easy on him.
Poor Andy Summers
bruh

Jedy guitar Master and a Pad a One.

Kevin Ayers Whole Earth band
Oh ? Ok yeah ; i remember reading that ollie halsall was kevin ayer's guitarist which i always thought was a weird combo
haha Summers sub Clapton licks. I've also heard is 'jazz' albums and feeble attempts at Philip Catherine. Absolute rubbish
