It is the same thing. Main stream rappers made it different because they can't spit off the top or don't want to embarrass themselves. Freestyle=off the top even the definition would tell you, seriously google the word freestyle. Now if you do spit a written there's nothing wrong with that, just don't say it's a freestyle. free styling is an art and should be respected, it's not supposed to be perfect and that's why me and a lot of others enjoy it and cringe when niggas spit writtens calling it freestyle or off the top.

If you watch a nigga rap for 10 minutes straight its a freestyle cuz thats clearly breaking the structure. He might spit some bars from one written then go off the top and then use other bars from another written. Thats freestyling. Real spitters aways got like 100 bars in the chamber regardless.
