    Having a collegiate wrestling background, kata guruma confused me so much when I got into judo. In the manuals drop kata guruma is identical to a fireman's carry throw, but in competition it looks completely different.

    So my Judo Lineage comes from Kyuzo Mifune, we even informally call our style Canon Judo after his book,, and we spend a lot of time on Kata Guruma and its characteristics, probably because Tama Guruma is considered a Kata Guruma by the Kodokan, so I totally agree with the distinction between Yoko Sutemi waza and Te waza. Supposedly, Mifune-Sensei loved to do Kata Guruma to the front, to the point where my Sensei once said Kodokan Judo finished Kata Guruma kneeling to the Side while Canon Judo finishes standing to the front, though I now get this was somewhat tongue in cheek.

    This may be your best video yet. If it is Kodokan Judo, then the Kodokan is the only arbiter of what the proper name of a technique is. Kodokan made a video titled, "Kodokan Judo, various techniques and their names." Many yokosutemi waza can be done inserting your head under the opponent's armpit....yoko otoshi, uki otoshi, even tani otoshi. Their are many other techniques that are called all sorts of names by entities , such as IJF, and only Kodokan has that authority. Next please do a video on seoi otoshi vs tai otoshi and seoinage. Most Europeans and American still think that seoiotoshi is a hybrid of seoinage and taiotoshi, which it is not.

    I remember learning a technique in BJJ that was kinda like kata guruma, but you use your leg to block and trip the opponents legs making it a yoko type of technique perhaps.

    I don't really know anything about Judo, I'm just hanging around here for fun and education. The actual kata guruma shown around the 5:05 mark to me is a fireman's carry. This "modern" technique starts the same, but adds a high probability of you ending up in a rear naked choke or a north-south. 😀

    • @kenwintin3014
      @kenwintin3014 2 роки тому +1

      The founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano developed kata guruma after seeing fireman's carry in a wrestling book. It enabled him to throw a large bully in his Tenshin Shinyo Ryu dojo, when he was still doing jujutsu.

  • @sevasentinel4146
    @sevasentinel4146 Рік тому

    I don't feel right calling it Yoko Otoshi in many cases due to it not resembling the "official" way the technique is done, especially in the Kodokan example shown. The way I see it is that Kata should be included if uke is closed in on tori's shoulders, so that the torso is behind tori's head. Then of course it's guruma if there's lift as you said, but otoshi if there's no lift and just pull.

    Yeah I've been injured by a leg grab kinda going wrong, landed on my knee and pulled the tendon in my groin. Not the worst thing to ever happen but still was not happy about it. They should just strictly prohibit those techniques from being taught to the newbs instead of banning them outright, The risks are real sure but it's mostly inexperience.

    • @NickKano11
      @NickKano11 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah BJJ has a good way of doing it: certain techniques aren't allowed in competition until reaching a certain belt.

      @@NickKano11 That sounds like the way on this, if only Judo would adopt this approach within the regulations, It's not like the Judo federations couldn't take a few cues from the BJJ world I must admit.
