After 6 years of dreaming to do the Beehive Traverse again, I finally got back to do it with Will and David. Will and I first did the route in 2018 and it has since been one of the best backcountry experiences I've ever had. This return trip however didn't go as planned, and it was cut short. Watch to see how it all unfolds.

It’s not always sunshine and rainbows. Glad Will is ok! A laceration needing sutures that far off grid is not a fun experience. Brown bird water is not fun. You guys pushed through some serious challenges. It seemed like water was your big hurdle till injury became the focus. I think you made the right call to exit so Will could get properly cleaned up and closed up. It was a beautiful area! Glad everyone is ok and you all made it home safe. Thanks for sharing this. The deserts of Utah are no walk in the park. The challenge is real and there are consequences if you get hurt out there.

Thank you! Totally, the water situation was the crux for sure. I drank over 3 gallons of water in that 36 hours. Was still not hydrated enough. Yes, so glad Will is okay and it wasn't any worse.

First, and most importantly, thank you for publishing this. I think this is some of the most important content for people to see. In my opinion some of the things I would have done differently than you... I always care 2 days of water 3 liter mil spec camelbak and 4 liters in bottles. I try to maintain never going bellow 1 day of reserve in arid regions but still not rationing water (that is a dangerous game). I bring a reserve bladder with me to the hike, often I leave it in the car, but if I get feedback that water is scare I will fill it and carry it giving me 3 days of water. I carry 2 days of water purification tablets, if I need to fill up water in stagnant pools like that I filter immediately and put in the purification tabs to start their 6 hour process. I have only had to use them once, but that was a really bad situation as well. Next, get pack country first aid training and carry a small suture kit (it weighs like a gram) ... I have stitched up 4 people over the years. Lastly, learn to use your load adjusters, there is no reason he should have fell face first. If you get in a situation where it is to steep for load adjusters, take your pack off and hand it down. Trying to be as light as possible is important, but being prepared is also VERY important. You asked another commenter to make a video about their first aid kit and that might be useful to see, but taking that back country first aid course will be even more beneficial in putting together the right kit (I have a feeling you will stop carrying that sam splint and instead carry stuff to make a splint that is lighter and more versatile). Colorado Mountain Club has a pretty good one these days to my understanding. Lastly, a compass, a good map, and the skills to use it are very important, you should have been able to quickly figure out how far that road was (actually you should have known that and had it plotted before you left). Basic land nav is a skill you can learn in just a few days. Thanks again for the video.

Yeah in areas like this it’s just really harsh conditions and opportunities for bad things to happen are higher. My WFR training has been one of the best things I’ve invested in and it’s been a huge help for being out.

Most everyone will be HOT when hiking in 85ºF. The NEED for water in these temperatures can mean the difference between living & dying. I, for one, simply don't go hiking if I can possibly avoid it in temperatures above 80ºF.
"Dead Bird Water" - At least you have & are using Sawyer Squeeze water filters, which is the one you WANT, if not carrying/using a Grayl water filter. Excellent, that you were smart enough to boil the water AFTER filtering it - to be safe.
Those CNOC water bags with the slider tops make for easy filling.
Steri Strips is something I've recently added to my First Aid Kit. They work.
Gotta know when to "hold 'em" & when to "fold 'em".
Any thoughts on carrying/using a Grayl water filter which would have eliminated the need to boil the "Dead Bird water"?
HUGE, thank you, for producing this video when thing "happen". Hopefully, your viewers will all learn the importance of making SMART decisions.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
