- Limeburning was a very old and important local industry for centuries. In This Walking Industrial History we look into two separate local tragedies from 1832 when one man met his death in very gruesome circumstances in a limekiln on Hartside Moor.
In 1893 the Todd family lived at White Lea, Ayleside near Alston where they were operating a Kiln. sadly 3 members of the family lost their lives in the kiln.
First time I ever saw Alston Moor was riding pillion on motorbike, in the rain, three years ago.. And I can't forget it. I've since seen it in the sunshine, - passenger in a car. But nothing compares with the loveliness of that day, in the rain. I wrote this poem about it, the other day.
ALSTON MOOR
I've never seen anywhere as beautiful,
That calls to me so incessantly,
As Alston Moor, in the rain and the mist.
I've seen it when the hills and valleys
Have been kissed
Softly by the sun,
And my heart longs to see it in the winter,
And when day has just begun.
I want to know your beauty
In every time and season,
You call and call to me,
And I don't know the reason -
This innate longing,
Maybe like birds have
for the South - and so they fly.
My heart yearns for your hills,
Your streams and hidden valleys
And I don't know why.
Ever since I saw you
My dreams are filled with your mists
And rain and little riverlets running by.

It's great to see the history of the area around Alston Moor on the screen, thank you Clive and Simon. Just one thing, the Ayle limekiln tragedy was reported in the Alston Herald of 7th September 1878.
I tried to find in papers Alistair but couldn't. now I have date will look again thanks...
That was really interesting and your dog loves those quarries. There was also a lot of lead mining in the Alston area.

Mr Teasdale’s name was Thomas, he left a very pregnant wife and small child. He died in the February and his expected son who was named Thomas after his father was born and died in infancy two months later, they are both buried in Melmerby Churchyard, double tragedy.
