Went with a Philips DCC 951 and no regrets here! I sure hope that they will bring this format back...retro while being modern, too! Kudos to Dr DCC and fellow enthusiasts!
Big thanks, great work!! This helped to verify my buyings this weekend. First yesterday a DCC 730 and today a DCC 600. Luckily as you suggested 😁 per generation. Now i need to check out about cassette cloning (hard!!), hacking, adding ports, firmware (??), etc... Therefore i Will check your site and UA-cam vids. Big thanks from the Netherlands (Eindhoven).
One retired Friend gave me his Philips DCC900 for free (not used very often, in best shape, and with all manuals, remote control and the box) some years ago, but i know, that neither dcc nor normal tapes are working (there is absolute no sound) As you stated, i must replace the capacitors first. Thank you for this very useful information!
I recently managed to obtain a New-old-stock Philips DCC-600. The package was complete. But I was reminded of the capacitors-issue. So before even powering it up I checked most of the DCC Museum videos and hoped for the best. I'm not a electronic-savvy person that would be able to replace capacitors etc. But I am a tape-enthousiast from the Netherlands and was so pleased with this brand-new old-stock device that I want to implement it back into my audio-gear-setup. I managed to find a few sealed DCC recordable tapes and fiddled with it a bit. However I heard a few dropouts and started to worry. So for the time being, I'm desperately gathering all the info I would need to find out what the problem might be. I hope it's not these boards or other stuff, because there's nobody near me that's capable of repairing these devices. Please keep making these videos, no matter how long they are up, they are still watched. And it gave me a breathe of relief to hear/see that the DCC600 is one of the 'better reliable ones' if it comes to capacitors etc. Let's hope for the best.
Hi, your 600 should only receive service for belts, a new gear and pinch rollers. We do have a service address in the Netherlands, so you could drop it off there if needed. You can reach us via the dccmuseum website.
Excellent work! Lots of useful information. Too bad you didn't put the type numbers on the screen. Hopefully there will be a similar video for the portables too, eventually.
@@holgerstiehl8230 Hello, I live in Sweden and bought it from a guy in Germany on Ebay. The only repair I've done so far is replacing the belt so unfortunately I can't give you any tip on a repair guy :/
I'm currently bidding on a DCC 730, i bid on it before i even found this video (but as there is still 6 days to go, there is no guarantee I will get it)
I have the DCC 600. Sometimes the tray will stick, but I’m sure a new belt will fix that. Also just bought a DCC 730, so looking forward to having two units to compare. At some point in the future I’d like to own a portable (or 2) as well. I feel it’s important to keep old formats alive - so I have great respect for everything that Ralf and the DCC Museum is doing.
Hello Dr. DCC, this information is great, but I viewed it after buying a device. Lucky me, it's a Philips DCC 730. There are some optical marks on the upside, but the front is fine. And the technic works fine. But you said, all of them needs to be refurbished. Do you know someone who is doing this job in Germany or maybe better in Europe... maybe Poland or GB? This would be a nice additional information - thank you in advance. Bye
@@DRDCC Wow... okay... this easy - thank you for the offer! Well I haven't seen all your videos - I'm sure you told about it in one of them ;) Okay, l look for the parcel price to the USA... what will be the costs for your work, please? Bye
In total, I'm om my 4th DCC player. I've had DCC in my life since 1994. I just sold my faulty philips DCC 900 with its dodgy capacitors. I had them changed, but there was still no sound, so bye, bye DCC. I have the 18bit philips DCC 730 now, it's the second one I've brought in the history on my DCC ownership. This one does have a problem, the fast forward doesn't work for some reason. Play, rewind, auto reverse 🔀 pause all work fine apart from the fast forward button. I can't try fast forward off the remote because like an idiot, I included it in the DCC 900 sale. I didn't think I'd buy another one. However, the 730 works 99% so I'm happy I suppose. I had a problem with a lumpy pinch roller but I sanded the surface smooth and it works great. I noticed that normal cassette twin decks use the same pinch rollers so I could swap them if I need, but I don't, so that's good. Anyone have any ideas why fast forward is not working? I've had a quick look inside but I don't know what to check for. There's nothing at all when you press fast forward off the button.
Might be just a sticky button, but the only real way to find out is either to remove the front and check/clean that contact or test with the remote. I understand you do not have one, but these would be the way I would trouble shoot.
What’s rarer DCC or 3M Revere tape cartridge? (I have a 3M revere machine) kinda interesting the 3M tapes lasted as long in the 60s (1962-66) as the DCC did 30 years later (1992-96)
2 possibilities: 1 play them back. 2. drill a hole in a specific spot and use them like DCC cassettes - only works with BASF chrome maxima afaik and may have a few dropouts.
Hello, I live in Portugal, and I watch your channel, and I would love to have a DCC reader, I even like the Philips DCC 900 or 951, I'm trying to buy one, but it's not easy, in Europe can you recommend somewhere where you can buy one? Thank you, Alvaro,
My 92 is still in need of one of the boards re-capping, I no longer have the time or eyesight to carry this out myself, does anyone provide this service at a reasonable cost? I re-capping the first board with the helpful advice from a French guy called Pascal around 10 years ago- how time flies!
If you have recapped the first board (on the mechanism), you biggest problems are over. The second audio board to the right still needs recapping, but if that dies, you can at least get a replacement for it. The first board you really can't do that (easily). What is your location? We might be able to help depending.
Enjoyed your video always. my Technics Rs-DC10 cannot play analogue cassette, no output sound. Could that because of the certain capacitor problems? Thank you and much appreciated if can be given some ideas of fixing it for fully functional condition.
I have a Technics RS-DC10 that I purchased when the technology was being phased out. It’s been in storage for a number of years. I recently fired it up to play some garage band recordings my friends and I made and noticed the sound cuts in and out. I really love this player and want to preserve these old recordings. Is there anything I should be aware of before I continue to use this? Your talk of leaky capacitors concerns me. I don’t want to ruin this player.
I would not buy any one. maybe this is just for special collectors with passion for it. yes!, that's not for me, price is very high for DCCs, I find it limited to record and not portable (and portable very complex and expensive). I'm sure fans with that passion already own this systems, of course that's good _in the name of music we like_ : :D xD
That depends. If you want maximum attention and superior audio quality, DCC is something you should consider. There are more regular cassette players vs DCC players in this world, so it depends on your needs.
There are only 2 recorders within the 3rd generation. The 730 and 951. These machines are so identical that making a choice and giving advice has to come from personal preference. I made the choice on the fact that the 730 is black and harder to find. So very personal indeed. The same thing happens within the 2nd generation. All recorders have the same specifications, so choices would be personal and I would always opt for the "different hard to get", like a 450 or Grundig 305. With the first Generation the Marantz DD92 is a clear winner in specs, as is the Victor 919 in the fourth Generation.
None! It's an outdated system, and presumably spares are hard to come by? 😂😂😂 Although you could say the same for many of my antiquated technology dinosaurs, such as VHS?

Proud owner of the DCC 730, Get it while you can, I have never heard a 730 has a leaky SM caps.
I have the 730 also, i had no leaking SM caps and the sound is beautiful and rewinds very quickly.
Bought a DCC 730 and guess what it has leaking caps. So they do leak so beware
Maybe not leaky SM caps but other caps can fail as well. Like on the 730 I just got.
