Very nice. I never thought about a chainstay protector. This video gives me an idea for using Plastidip. It wont be as thick as the rubber but it will be extremely clean and it comes in different colors to better match the color of your bike frame.
Just got a brand new bike, didn't realize it didn't have a chainstay protector, rode down a few flights of stairs and INSTANTLY chipped the chainstay 12 times. So I came to this video and covered the paint chips up with an old tube - now I'll pretend that never happened. Great video!

Not only the riding is fun, you can also enjoy taking care of your bike. Zen and the Art of MTB maintenance :)
What a durable chainstay protector with the superglue method, custom and will certainly last.
Thanks
This was great! I used a scrap piece of rubber roofing which is pretty thick. I now have crazy glue in pretty much all my fingers but the guard looks great! Thanks for the tip!
Hi Steve, the thicker wrap of the wrap around method is better suited for downhillers or free riders where the incidence of chain strike is much higher. The super glue method does absorb sound very well too - just don't go using a superlight/superthin tube. And the supergle method looks way neater. :D
I tried the superglue method, was quick and so easy. Nice to not have to run to the store for every little thing and plus it saves one more thing form going into the landfill :)
The zip tie helps hold it in place that bit better so it lasts longer.
Do you realize how much weight you just added?!?! How can you ride with that much weight? Hahaha. Just kidding, awesome video, will be trying this out soon!
James Harris Classic! Cheers, James.~ Chris

man i'm sorry i'm beginner so i wanna ask what's the benefits of that chainstay ?
what''s the "chainstay" used for ?
+BlacK DusK
Like, if you've got a shit rear derailer, your chains are going to be bouncing around when you're going downhill, you'll hear it hitting your frame and that takes the paint off and the very fact you're having metal to metal contact is bad. so yeah, we cover the frame with some rubber to prevent chain and frame wear.
I prefer the MTBtips version - the 'Best Chainstay Protector' - cause it's nice and slimline :D ~ Chris
cheap and easy.. gj Chris.;) your movies are really worth to see.;)
3m helicopter tape works great too, and it is near invisible so you can't even tell it's there!
Chris could you do some more videos about what to wear cheers
Black Gaffer Tape it blends in, is thinner than tyre tube and gaffer tape is made to release and leave little glue residue.
made one of the 2nd type, looks really good thank you for the nice tip ^^
+alexander neshev
can you tell me what the "chainstay" used for ?
+BlacK DusK hi, the protector is
used for protection from chain slaps on the frame :)
alexander neshev thank you
Thanks mate.
Excellent! Enjoy that new bike. :D
For the first method use extralightlight tube for better appearance. I used a Schwalbe no.14 tube.
This is a great idea, however, looks a bit bulky. If i cut the tube in half like you mentioned, is it equally as protective while keeping the chain slap sound down?
I tried out the wrap method on my bike. But instead of using the entire tube, I cut a strip maybe 30mm wide and wrapped with 50% overlap. It looks much better!
Sweet!~Chris
Mad sandals bro!
I made mine without super glue but tied up with an old earpiece
A chainstay protector protects you chainstay from damage done by the chain as it bounces off the stay when you're rolling along or down rough terrain.
I have the XTR back deruler and that comes with a brake that makes the chain stay in place and does not hit the frame at all.
It might not last but I am going to try some paracord.
Can you describe the C clamp assembly you're using to hold your bike?
So it's the same thing all over again? I wonder if it will actually play like a video game this time.
Is the zip tie necessary for the first method? Doesn't the rubber hold itself with the friction?
i have cables routed along the bottom of the chain stay. should i leave them exposed or encase them?
I'm just starting my adventure with MTB and could you tell me what gives "chainstay protector" ?
Wrapping with an old tube, that's actually not a half bad idea. I was just going to wrap the frame in some electrical tape but this seems like a better idea.
thnx for the tips but i did mine my own way
and which way/ technique would you recommend? thanks
Why would you use superglue? It seems better to use contact glue. CA glue is just nasty, it cracks, it gets everywhere, i don't know why people use it for everything.
Contact glue is usually made out of choloroprene rubber components (unfortunately not the same as butyl rubber of the inner tube, which would have held even better) and various solvents. You paint a strip on both sides of the piece with the glue, and wait for first stage of the solvent to flash off and the glue surface to become dry to the touch, perhaps around 10 minutes. Then you have approx. half an hour to assemble the piece. When you hard press the two surfaces which have dried glue on them, they bond instantly, but it will not bond to other surfaces, so your paint should not be affected. After an hour or two, the chloroprene on both sides of the glue joint will crosslink and the connection will be durable, flexible and permanent.
I haven't tried this, but the most issue i can predict is some warping and swelling of butyl rubber due to solvent composition, but it should contract and hold on even better once it sets, and it shouldn't necessarily happen, butyl is actually quite resilient, and various glue manufacturers use different solvent.
Oh, to get superglue off your digits, use acetone, or the old cheap nasty kind of fingernail varnish remover.
will road tubes work on a road frame
I just bought a lizardskin chainstay protector :)
Tubeless. Cheers. ~ Chris
I like your super glue idea.. But I just got another idea.. use rubber cement to make a 2 ply of inner tube and then use a Baseball Stitch to sew it together ( Just like in this instuctable.... www.instructables.com/id/Sewn-Bike-Innertube-Chainstay-Protector/ ) Add benefit of 2 layers, streamline look, And if you want, use a color thread that matches your bike... Down side is it dose take time to do but do it when you have down time.
3 years down the road but thanks for that guide. Seems easy enough to do, going to get some thread and a needle tomorrow :)

Dude, thanks heaps for this posting! I followed your second technique and it came out looking a treat! Used UHU All Purpose Power glue which worked awesomely (initially went for my puncher repair glue, but that had dried up!).
Took a pic, looks great!:

@3GBlog Check out my video response above for how to remove a SRAM Powerlink with no tools in seconds.
U use inner tube or Tubeless?
Road bike tubes are less bulky.
Still protects well, just not as durable. ~ Chris
A chainstay protector is about £5
5£ is the price of a pint. This man just bought you a pint.
I had a spare tube (with a puncture) and glue, I just saved 5 squid for that Guinness and the time to go and buy a chainstay!
Nice but easier to just buy one
one can use badminton racket grip.........
could one also contemplate the sacrifice of a crochet mallet grip to achieve the same results?
curious of a tennis racket tape would suffice if badminton is not practiced locally?
guess what i wrapped mine with duct tape and it holds all the shit
ur videos are way cooler because ur australian. lol
Dude whyd you stop making videos
He got mad because nobody would give him money... :(
ZES Close. I went broke because I spent too much time making awesome videos, and never caring about the money or the cost of it all, until it was too late. I've climbed back out of that dark hole now. These days, I'm happier than ever and working on some new vids that will change mountain biking worldwide forever. Can't wait to release them.
What exciting things that help others are you up to, ZES??
Cheers! ~ Chris
+mtbtips YOURE STILL HERE! Thank god! I really enjoyed your videos mate! Glad you're working on some vids. I haven't been up to much... I just did this CS protector like 15 mins ago! Id say it looks great!
+MTBtips how do you tag someone on yt comments!!!!!??
I sewed mine to look better lol
4000 Bugs for a good bike but no mor money to buy a protector ......:-)))
sorry but it looks sloppy
+Alex Colon can you tell me what' the "chainstay" used for ?
Seriously? That looks bad. It looks worse than having chips
shotsstringsnapper Your chips must be BIG! :D~ Chris
