How to Quiet Bike Chain Slap with a DiY Chainstay Protector
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 сер 2024
- All you need is an old bicycle inner tube, some Mastic tape, electrical tape, and a zip tie to make a chain stay protector that rivals the fancy, ribbed chain slap guards that come on new bikes today.
MATERIALS
- Scotch 2228 mastic/ rubberized tape (Affiliate link - amzn.to/3dpxZwr)
- An old bike tube
- Scissors
- Electrical tape
- One zip tie
INSTRUCTIONS
Measure and cut a long piece of mastic tape according to your chainstay length.
Get an eagle eye view of where your chain meets your chainstay, and wrap the piece of mastic tape down the chainstay where your chain is likely to hit. Rub the tape down and around the chainstay for a good fit.
Cut a few smaller (1-1.5″) pieces of the mastic tape to make ridges along the longer piece of mastic tape and apply.
Cut a piece of inner tube for your chainstay, and cut it down the middle. Lay the long piece of tube flat, and start wrapping it around the chainstay. No tape is needed at first. Start by the seat tube, and tuck the beginning of the tube under the wrap, and keep wrapping.
Apply some electrical tape around the end of the wrap, near the axle. Add a zip tie around the electrical tape for more security.
Enjoy a more quiet bike!

Thanks for sharing my friend I'll do the same for my bike too
wow - how innovative!!! - amazing - how could I not know that???
wow thanks alot my bike has been disturbing me
Thank you very much!!!
Looks like it would be a lot easier with the wheel removed and again with no chain.
That is an option too.
Holy smokes! There is got to be an easier way. Thank you though.
That should last you a hundred years , you are good to go !
🙌
Could just use the tube,if it doesn’t work then do a layer of scotch rubber tape then put the tube back on over it
why do you need the mastic under the tube? tube should offer all the protection you would need, if you want more, double wrap it.
Aside from extra protection, the smaller sections of Mastic form bumps or ridges that break up the motion of the chain, disrupting the wave effect. You could sub anything to create the ridges; Mastic tape is just easy because it's cut-able and sticky.
Specialized was one of the first to discover this and incorporated a similar design on their most recent Stumpjumper bikes. Fortunately the solution is a simple one that's available to anyone.
@@singletracks thank you
Five Stars
Is it okay for the RD wire to be pinned with the interior tube? Will it affect the RD from shifting?
Never cover the actual shift cable with anything, covering the cable housing with tape shouldn't be a problem if you're not squeezing the juice out of it. Haven't had any issues with it. -Matt.
At the risk of sounding dumb would it be easier to remove the rear tyre first. This would make applying the tape much easier.
Yes, good point!
It’s too thick
😂 the electrical tape is really tacky, you call this modern.
every Mountain biker i know has electrical tape and grip tape in their gear/tool bag, lol its the ducktape of the bike world, have some respect it protects the bike for pennys a foot , they do sell sleeves and vinyl that are good too
