The best way I like to put it. Its not worth going out on a whim and buying the Leica unless you absolutely need the weather sealing and parfocal feature. The Lumix is a good kit lens. However, if your going to be buying a new camera and getting the Leica on a big discount, its only an extra $100 for the upgraded model. So for a $100 more, shut up and take my money!
Twice the price for the Leica. Yes, a better lens, but for the budget people out there like me, that "kit" lens will have to do. Thanks for the comparison and opinions !
It is definitely not a budget option, it is intended for users who like the usability of MFT but want to match the performance of larger sensor cameras.
I've been shooting with the kit lense the 25mm 1.2 the 42.5 1.2 and 90% of these reviews talk about the quality build lol treat your equipment like you paid for it get creative with your shots make sure you have lighting and learn how to use what you have I promise you will be ok
Just ordered the G9 with the Leica 12-60mm because the G9 with the Lumix 12-60mm was out of stock. I didn't want to spend more money on a lens that's slightly better optically. After watching this video, I was so pleased to go with the Leica lens, it's worth the extra £200 for the initial purchase of the kit but maybe not if already owning the Lumix 12-60mm then upgrading later. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Excellent video as always! After having watched tons of videos on your channel, im seriously thinking about getting the same exact setup as you! I currently have a nikon d5500 and i think i'm ready to upgrade. The G9 with the Leica lens seems to be the best option for hybrid shooting for me personally. I also really like your watch channel, hope to see more videos on there soon!
Thank you, The G9 with Leica is an excellent combination, you basically won't loose any image quality, but gain a lot in terms of usability. I am currently working on a new watch review, so new video there should be coming soon.
I was looking for a quick idea about the Lumix 12-60 and clicked your comparison video first. It was succinct yet gave me a good idea what to expect, with excellent examples. An unexpected bonus was to be reminded of my 2008 trip to Ljubljana,, which I wasn't expecting, not having previously seen your videos.
Good job, nice comparison. I've had the leica 12-60mm since it first came out, and I have it on my G9 as my "go to" lens. I use other panaleica lenses, 25mm, 45mm macro and 100-400mm, but the 12-60 is the one I use the most. Lovely build quality and the image quality is first class. Highly recommended 👍
its only 300 (open box on ebay from camera stores, otherwise 600 more) more than the 12-60 and this is the lens i use all the time, so i am selling my 12-60 for the leica 12-60 to get the extra stop of light build quality (the kit lense does feel a bit flimsy) and of course what he doesn't mention here is that at f2.8 leica is very good vs good with the cheaper one. paying a difference of 300 to get the leica is almost free in the uber expensive world of leica panasonic fyi. also the parafocal aspect is extremely good to have believe it. The reason you can find it for 600 is because it ised to be sold as a kit lens for gh5 and camera store break up the kits for people who dont want that lens.
I tested the Lecia 12-60mm f2.8-4 at 16mm vs the Sig 16 f1.4 both at f4 and they are identical. I cant tell the difference! Lecia 12-60mm vs Oly 40-150mm f2.8. At 60mm at f8 and the Lecia destroys the Oly!
Are you sure the Leica is parfocal? Does it keep the focus even when it is on MF? I'm guessing G9 is just doing a good job of continuous AF with that lens...
The lumix came with my cam back when I bought it but 7 years later and I'm looking to sell it to buy the Leica now as this 12-60 has become my primary lens.
I got the 15 f1.7 but now I wish I got the 12 35 mk1 as it's more suitable for vlogging and versatile, now I kinda want the 12 60 instead and can't decide. Which one would you choose of thr 3 if you had to back in the day? Also is there a big difference on lowlight between mk1 and mk2 12 60?
I own a Panasonic GX85 with the kit lens (12-32mm). I also got the 45-150mm for free. I'm debating between selling both lenses and getting a 12-60mm, or just selling the 45-150mm and getting the 25mm f/1.7. I shoot mainly video, but love to shoot some pictures too. What do you recommend? Thanks.
I also own gx85 with the two kit lens 12-32mm and 45-150mm. I also have 25mm 1.7. I don't use the 12-32mm anymore since the 25mm can cover that range. Rather than selling the 45-150mm, sell the 12-32mm and get the 25mm 1.7 or the 20mm 1.7 if size matters.
I bought a Leica 14-50mm f3.8 Elmar 4/3 lens with a Lumix 4/3 to MFT adaptor. This is a great lens sharper than the Lumix 12-60mm lens and it's a lot cheaper than the Leica 12-60.
I've just ordered that better one slightly used for pretty good money (from reliable shop that is actually testing all used products). It should be a massive difference, especially on 60 mm, like f4 vs f5.6, that's like twice more light or something, this is very limiting with these small chips that don't have that great high iso, but price for new lenses with f2.8-4 is crazy. I have Panasonic G80 now, I am thinking about switching to G9 (they also have them in used condition for already pretty good price) but I don't really believe it will have better image quality than my G80, I will probably wait some time and then buy G9 II, that finally has phase focusing, that looks like a solid upgrade.
One question i have you didn't mention would be nice to know how fast the aperture closes at different focal lengths. is 2.8 only at 12 mm then it jumps to 3.5 at 15 for example? do you have this info for both lenses? thx
Good question. I have both and I somewhat prefer 12-60 F3.5 at least in sunny weather. Sharpness is hard to judge, but I would say it's about the same and it's not problem on either of them. Maybe 12-35 is softer at 35mm, but I would need to take photos to compare sharpness at pixel level. But the main downside of 12-35 is lens flare when taking photos with strong light source (sun, street lamps, ...). 12-35 is definitely better for video, because of smooth zoom. Rest is trading zoom range for aperture. But as travel/outdoor lens I would choose 12-60/f3.5. Huge advantage of 12-60 is that it's pretty cheap with new camera.
There is "something" about Pana Leica line, and you seem to elaborate well.. The contrast and the richness in color personalizes and differentiates this PanaLeica lines from Lumixs and other brands..
Hello and thanks for the videos! My Leica 12-60 does seem not to be parfocal. It turns very blurry with small movement of the zoom ring and than it corrects it. What are the exact settings of yours when you experience parfocalness? Or is it allways parfocal? Do you think there could be a problem with my piece and I should consider using the guarantee? Thanks a lot
Great comparison but I must ask is the Leica truly parfocal? After watching I researched online and can’t seem to support this. I’d love to know which m43 lenses are parfocal, if any.
The Hybrid Shooter thanks for the reminder. I had watched the video entirely, but then researched other parfocal lens possibilities, of which I didn’t get far at all and after that forgot you had an actual video example. Thank you.
The Hybrid Shooter ok i see but i still dont understand how you mount them on the lenses there is no thread to screw on on the lense. The freewell looks basically the same like my haida they nead a thread
Hi I was thinking of picking up a G85 "body only" for the unlimited recording. Could you use the Panasonic LUMIX Professional 12-60mm Camera Lens, Leica DG Vario-ELMARIT, F2.8-4.0 that came with the G9 and would it work ok for making youtube videos? It would be great if I could share the lense between them.
Very informative video. Objectively, I have 12-60 Kit against the 14-140 II and I am not dissatisfied with it. Now I've ordered the 12-60 Leica but I'm not sure whether that was the right decision. In some tests you can read that the imaging performance of the Leica is almost identical to the 12-60 kit lens or the 14-140 II. Can you give me an experience? Is the 12-60 leica that much better? I also have the 25mm 1.7 and the 100-300 lense.
Well, due to general limitations of M43 system such as the size of the optics and extremely high-pixel density, the differences between mid-range and high-end optics are not that clear in the real-world use. Leica is definitely better, but you might not see that when using most publishing platforms.
@@TheHybridShooter Okay thanks for the answer and the information. I ask because we want to travel to Costa Rica again if it is possible and I am currently considering the right lenses for my G91.
I still wonder what would be best between 1 zoom reasonably fast (constant F/2.8 would be fine, F/2.8-4 is the last "Ok" ) , or 2 / 3 very fast (F/1.7 or .8) & sharp primes, at focals covering the most important Fov (10 to 16 , then 24/25 , then eventually 50mm ), for low light (think I'll do a fair amount of it), as it's always better to be able to, to get faster shutter speed if needed, facilitate the lighting, consuming - battery on the LEDs, etc, for videos notably, where you can't do long exposure to save you from noise & low DR...
Zdravím , aktuálně vlastním lumix g7 a mám základních 14-42mm.. nartáčím videa a fotim. Mám otázku .. mám si koupit samotný 12-60 f2.8 a později zoom (45-175) nebo zvolit variantu 25mm f1.7 a zoom stejný ? Jde mi spíše o to udali 25mm f1.7 nebo 12-60 f2.8... jaký je vás názor ??😊
This video's now close to 2 years old, so don't know if anyone's paying attention. I picked up a Leica version used-nearly new, but am disappointed in build quality. I am comparing with Oly 12-40 Pro and Panasonic 14-140 build quality. I can move the end of the Leica tube up and down more than either the O12-40 or P14-140. I can also move it in and out on the Leica more than with either of the other lenses. I think my Leica has a build quality issue. Has anyone who owns one found it to be either nice and tight or relatively loose? I also find in real world testing (not a target) that both the O12-40 and my Panasonic 35-100 are sharper than the Leica 12-60 at the same focal lengths and f5.6 - and I do care about that. I'm making prints, not posting.
@@TheHybridShooter Old question, but I still don't really get how it works, I've just ordered my first leica lens, I am used to changing focus modes on my body, but I guess button on lens will not jump to different position when I switch it on body, it's confusing, but I will see soon. 🙂
It's a 2.8 lens only at 12mm, though. Once you move even 1mm it starts to darken. In reality, I would count these as a f/5.6 and a f/4 lens. For a f/2.8 lens, one has to buy the 12-35 variant or the Olympus 12-40. And if I was to buy a f/4, I would probably give 150 euro more and take the 12-100 Olympus. It's heavier, but has more reach and better focusing ring for MF.
It is shown in the video. You can count it as you wish, but these are 2.8-4 and 3.5-5.6 lenses. Every lens is a compromise... 12-100 is optically not great, you loose dual IS and in-camera corrections if you use it on Panasonic, so I wouldn't consider it for Panasonic. I wouldn't consider Panasonic for Olympus for the same reasons.
It appears the Leica is now more than 4 times the price of the Lumix. The price has really dropped for the F3.5 Lumix. If you are on a budget, the Lumix is even more attractive now.
I bought the Lumix 12-60mm and find it a brilliant lens on my G80. I did consider the Leica as I already have a Leica f1.4 25mm and it my favourite lens, but the high cost on the Leica 12-60 made my mind up to buy the Lumix. I'm happy with my choice.
I've got 2 of the Lumix 12-60 lenses (multicam filming) and they've both got the really annoying trait of not being able to zoom smoothly. With its plastic zoom ring; if you 'pinch' and turn it clings to the inner parts, resulting in a jerky zoom. You have to wrap your entire hand around it and avoid any squeezing. Leica is coming tomorrow - second hand bargain £340.
You're welcome, picture quality won't be affected by using non-panasonic lens, IBIS will still work, but with non-panasonic lenses IBIS and lens stabilization won't work together.
brilliant review thanks! Just what i needed. My UA-cam Channel (portrait painting / oil painting) needs an uprade camera wise, i'm hoping to get a GH5 + leica asap :) thanks for the great vid, subbed and liked :)
Ahoj. Super videá 🙏 môžem sa spýtať ? Kúpil som gx9 a mám k nemu objektív lumix 12-32mm. Točím do full hd - rybárske videá.
I enjoy your reviews and find them very comprehensive. However I wouldn't dear to say this Leica lens (or any photography zoom) is parfocal, since that is something very specific that video and cine zooms are designed for, and one of the reasons they're so expensive. Maybe it's focus point doesn't change much and together with the deep DOF works close to parfocal. But I think if it had that feature/characteristic would have been advertised as such. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised.
If he tested it's parfocal, then it's parfocal. Unless you have that lens and can prove that it's not the case. Cine lenses are expensive because of the guaranteed light transmission (T-stop), declicked aperture ring, and consistent size/weight for a lens series to eliminate gimbal adjustments when changing lenses, and for zooms, having fixed aperture/transmission and being parfocal. Parfocal is not exclusive to a cine zoom. It's not advertised because it's not needed in a general photography lens, except in super telephoto lenses for sports and birding.
@@TheHybridShooter Yes for my 20-60mm, is it digital parfocality. But my 12-60mm PL is not. I have firmware 1.1. Do you think some copies can be parfocal and some not ?
I'm surprised I couldn't find other comparisons like this. What "advanced optical characteristics" have you noticed? It would have been nice to see more than one side by side highlighting them. Would you consider sharing some JPEGS we could pixel peep? Thank you
@@TheHybridShooter you are right, i did more testing and it's not, at first i thought it was parfocal probably because i was shooting landscape video at high F stop which means everything was easily in focus anyway.

Hello my friend. I was wondering if you can help me. I bought the Leica 12-60, six months ago, I can swear that it is getting loose. I'm trying to find a camera store with one in stock to compare but no one has one in my region. Can you tell me if your Leica 12-60 is exhibiting a wobble at the front section, the first 2 cm or so? Mine is quite pronounced. As well, the stabilization/focus motor seems to rattle when it is not powered much more than I recall. You can see and hear what I'm talking about on my video at 4:44 (ua-cam.com/video/QE7VBpikvnQ/v-deo.html). The lens still seems to work, but if I need to take it back it would be useful to know if you have this same issue. Thanks so much.
Helloy, the rattling inside of the lens is normal with stabilized lenses, I have lenses that rattle much more. Regarding the wobble at the front section, there may be a bit of play, but it is nothing serious with my copy.
I sold my lumix 12-60 lens and bought the lumix leica 14-50 f3.8 elmar with lumix adapter. The leica is a much sharper lens but not weather sealed.
F2.8-4.0 vs F3.5-5.6 when we talk about m43 is HUGE difference -_-
Twice the price for the Leica. Yes, a better lens, but for the budget people out there like me, that "kit" lens will have to do. Thanks for the comparison and opinions !

Hi are you going to make a video on the smaller kit lens?
I will include that in GX9 long term review next week.
Hi. Thanks for video. Can I use this lens with Olympus omd em10 markii?
Yes, you can.
Most excellent comparison / review 👍
That depends purely on your preferences and shooting style. I much prefer zoom lenses on M43, because of the size and portability.
Zdravím , aktuálně vlastním lumix g7 a mám základních 14-42mm.. nartáčím videa a fotim. Mám otázku .. mám si koupit samotný 12-60 f2.8 a později zoom (45-175) nebo zvolit variantu 25mm f1.7 a zoom stejný ? Jde mi spíše o to udali 25mm f1.7 nebo 12-60 f2.8... jaký je vás názor ??😊
Ale všeobecně asi skončím na leica 12-60... prozatím g7 ale časem chci g9 a 100-300 ... váš názor ? V plánu fotografování i video 😊
Záleží od toho, čo chcete fotografovať / a aké sú priority. 12-35mm F2.8 by molo byť dobrý kompromis kvôli širšej clone na 25mm.
Thank you for this comparison. For my needs and skills with my G85 the Lumix 12-60 is fine.
You're welcome, Lumix 12-60 is still very capable lens.
Thanks for the insightful review. Helped me with my purchase decision!
My pleasure, thank you for your support!
Yes, there is a bit of play. I have never found that to be and issues.
thanks for this video, it makes it easier for me to go with the Leica on my coming G9
Question: why does the leica have an AF/MF switch when this ability is build onto the Panasonic bodies. Does this negate the function of the other?
It is not on every Panasonic body, it is just doubled control.
Thanks - often wondered about that.
@@TheHybridShooter Old question, but I still don't really get how it works, I've just ordered my first leica lens, I am used to changing focus modes on my body, but I guess button on lens will not jump to different position when I switch it on body, it's confusing, but I will see soon. 🙂
Good video! The 12-35 2.8 is also very good!
The Leica version is twice the price of lumix in my country
can you vlog with this lens at 12mm?
yes
What are your thoughts on the new Panasonic TZ200 / ZS200 point and shoot?
The aperture on the lens is very slow, I would much prefer LX10.
How about comparing the 4/3 version of the 12-60mm from Olympus ?
I don't have that lens, so I unfortunately can't do that.
i am thinking a G9 and the leica 12-60 and maybe the leica 50-200
i have a 12 year old pany and i still love it
so panny has a lot history for me
It appears the Leica is now more than 4 times the price of the Lumix. The price has really dropped for the F3.5 Lumix. If you are on a budget, the Lumix is even more attractive now.
High-er end M43 gear is generally a tough sale nowadays. At that price, the Lumix is more sensible choice.
Yes, for the price it is excellent all-round lens.
Very interresting - thanks for this video !
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
i think the best thing is the parafocal zoom thingy
It is indeed important feature for filmmakers.
Great video as usual!
Thank you!
Nice Comparison!!
Thanks for sharing! Will the G9 IBIS or picture quality be degraded when using Olympus M.ZUIKO Pro lenses? Thank you
You're welcome, picture quality won't be affected by using non-panasonic lens, IBIS will still work, but with non-panasonic lenses IBIS and lens stabilization won't work together.
Which IBIS is used in such a scenario? The one from the camera or from the lense? And how many stops do I get then? Dual IS 2 seems to get up to 6.5
You can choose which stabilization will work. Effectivity depends on the focal length.
Great job even though you just made me spend more for the Leica :)
Well done. Thank you
Thank you, I hope that it will be worth it for you!
Very good explanation ❤
Thank you!
Thank you :)
You're welcome!
What country is this?
Slovakia
Another excellent review...
Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome! I'm glad that it was helpful!
brilliant review thanks!

The 12-60 Leica also has great close focusing ability at .3 magnification. It's a do it all lens.
Good job, and nice Biatec watch..
Thank you!
Nice job.
Thank you!
Ooh the price hurts
Yeah, it unfortunately does.
Haha if i may ask, what wide angle lens would you recommend for my g85 (lens that is ideally cheap if possible haha?)
12-32mm F3.5-5.6 vs 12-60mm F3.5-5.6 Please~
I unfortunately don't have 12-32mm.
My 12-60mm PL sample is absolutely not parfocal, very interesting ...
What camera are using it on?
@@TheHybridShooter Panasonic GH5. I have the 20-60mm for my S5 and this lens is parfocal.
@@aiseurnae5976 I'm not sure, how is that possible, it is "digital parfocality", so make sure that FW in camera and the lens are latest.
@@TheHybridShooter Yes for my 20-60mm, is it digital parfocality. But my 12-60mm PL is not. I have firmware 1.1. Do you think some copies can be parfocal and some not ?
I have no idea.
I'm surprised I couldn't find other comparisons like this. What "advanced optical characteristics" have you noticed? It would have been nice to see more than one side by side highlighting them. Would you consider sharing some JPEGS we could pixel peep? Thank you
The lumix is also parfocal (edit: no it's not)
No, it is not.
@@TheHybridShooter you are right, i did more testing and it's not, at first i thought it was parfocal probably because i was shooting landscape video at high F stop which means everything was easily in focus anyway.
Great Review!
Thank you!

The Hybrid Shooter Thank you. It does work properly.
Ouch the pan were painful to watch... Change your fluid head my friend...
I haven't used any fluid head in this video. All panning was handheld.
@@TheHybridShooter Ok that explains it then ;)
