  • We all own jacks and jack stands, but we've seen many using ramps as a quick and effective way to get the car up as well. But how do we like them?

    You know I SERIOUSLY appreciate you posting this. Hearing and reading about how these things can happen is TOTALLY different than actually watching it happen in order to learn off of. I appreciate you sharing this as it could possibly prevent a more catastrophic incident. Who knows anything can happen. Might as well see as much as I can.

    I've been using ramps for the last 27 Years and is the best way to go . When driving up the ramp ...go slow and you will feel car take a quick rise up letting you know you're about to roll onto the flat . when you feel that roll over let go of the gas and the back stop will stop momentum . I'm more afraid to use jacks due to you are depending on not having a hydraulic failure in the jack . The ramps are much quicker also

      I'm really glad they work for you! I'm just so used to jacks and jack stands that I still prefer them. And I cannot tell you how hard I tried to go as gently as possible to actually try to make these work hahah. Can't remember if I showed all attempts in this video but I went up and down numerous times!

    man that exact thing happened to me on my new corolla too. it’s sooo low to the ground the ramps practically stabbed the underside of my car. i was freaking out and had to use the scissor jack to get them off. It was a frightening experience and ruined my day. The next day i gave it another try and changed my oil. i’m glad i wasn’t the only one who did that.

  • @solson223

    I'm thinking of doing this same thing to change oil. What comes to mind (after watching that first overshoot) is that measuring the distance you need to go to get the front tires at the top, and then putting some 4x4 blocks in front of the back tires at the same distance would be helpful. It would help to stop the car so you don't overshoot.

    • @BroSeaman
      @BroSeaman Рік тому +2

      The problem, is it is not necessarily "overshoot" as much as it is the ramps slipping backwards (ESPECIALLY if you do it in a garage vs the driveway). The key I have found is: do not stop on the ramp part. Just creep it up until you crest the top: The feeling is obvious and you just lay off the gas as soon as it is beyond the slanted portion. I am so thankful how honest this video poster was in showing the "fail!"

    Might have been easier to jack the car up then slide the ramps under the wheels if your doing this by you self. Or a cheap mirror on a stand so you can see the wheel. I had the same issue the first time, you live and learn.

    Lack of "FEELIN!"
    You can make your own ramp out of 2" x 8" planks. Stair step 3 of them for a 6" hight. Screw a verticel one at the end so it sticks up a good 4", this will keep you from rolling off.
    You did pull the hand brake?

  • @peteredwards9147

    I only use metal car ramps, I loop a bit of old carpet through the first metal run on the ramp then drive on to this, then fold the carpet back to the front of the tyres, this stops the ramps slipping forwards. Once your tyres are at the front of the car ramps stop and Mark the floor at the side of your door window the length of the ramps, I use two screwdrivers or spanners. Doing it this way you know the ramps won't move and you know the distance to move forward by just looking out of your car door window easy.

      Yes. Absolutely. Before adopting the "two-foot" method I had scared myself shipless every time using only one foot. A lot can happen in the super short time between taking your foot off the gas, moving it to the brake, and finally stopping.
      My technique is to (left foot) keep the brake on slightly all the way up, and use the brake instead of the gas, to control my speed while inching my way up the ramp (like go, stop, go, stop, go, stop...). With one foot always on the brake you have instant stopping at any point during the climb.

So with my hate for ramps from that experience when my sister asked for help getting her car on ramps I jacked her cars front up a corner at a time placed the ramps under the tires for her and when she was done changing her own oil she only had to back off of them.

    Yes, please stay in the car. You can buy a large mirror and position it along the front wheel to see where you are as you go up the ramp. (You need to be in a garage where the mirror can rest along the wall. Plastic mirrors are cheap. Brake on one foot and the other on the gas pedal. After two failures like his I used the mirror and it was easy as there is no guessing and you do not overshoot the ramp

    Should have saw your video first. I made exactly the same mistake. The shitty part is my Corolla has low ground clearance, it cut into the lip of the ramp and wedged it tight. I had to jack a wheel up and retrieve it. (Lesson learn, slow and steady acceleration)

    Having the front of the car on ramps changes the exit angles of the sump drain. Would the rear of the car also need to be on axle stands to level the car off before draining the oil?

    • @762N8O
      @762N8O Рік тому

      On my cars the drain plug is on the rear and the elevation of front wheels facilitates better drainage of oil. Is confirmed with adding more oil.
      I frequently rotate my tires at the same time and the ramp method doesnt help me there

  • @radek1cihak
    @radek1cihak Рік тому

    Do you know why I played this video? Because I want to know if it is a problem that the car is not level on the ramp - what effect does it have on the complete draining of the oil. Old oil should not be mixed with new oil. Nothing. I've been looking for an hour and no one cares.

    • @TheParkingLotMechanic
      @TheParkingLotMechanic  Рік тому

      I get it. I really do. But I've had no issues either jacking up a car or using ramps to change the oil. Believe it or not, I try to angle the incline to make the drain the lowest point to try to get as much out as possible. For at home, I see no issue with it. Professionally, paid, with warranties potentially involved, make it level.
