    I have a 1949 Chevy 6400 grain truck with a 235 in it. I am going to have to rebuild both the starter and the generator, so this video could not be more helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make a video of it for those of us who are just starting on the long journey of classic restoration.

    I first want to thank you for taking the time to showing us thorough techniques in disassembly and assembly of the generator. In regard to the felt washer and retainer sequence the first thing I noticed was first reference was 1942-1948 where as I have a 1938 which might explain the difference. Maybe they, GM changed the sequence starting in 42. My 38 Chevrolet maintenance manual does not show a parts breakdown for the generator or starter.

    Interesting watch. There are three types of field coils: Series wound high speed low torque, Series-Parallel wound medium speed and torque, and Parallel wound high torque.
    In every case, the matter is simple. It is an educated short to ground. To promote the highest torque value requires the lowest possible circuit resistance, and therefore you
    want the resistance of the field coils to be zero. In operation, carrying hundreds of amperes, the overall speed of the cranking motor is limited by brush location, and by the
    ratio of the armature pinion tooth count-to-the-flywheel ring gear tooth count, frequently a 16:1 ratio. You mentioned a lot of the important considerations. To remove the bushings
    from the drive end frame and the commutator end frame, you use a cape chisel. The felt washer, if equipped acts as a brake to slow the disengaged armature after cranking, and
    to reduce seepage of the bushing lubricant, and one lubricant that works very well is Lubriplate 105. Your presentation was engaging and offered many good suggestions.

    Quick tip, to remove a blind bushing. Tap it, use a nut(s) in the bottom of the hole, find a bolt that fits the newly tapped bushing. Tighten the bolt in stages adding nuts as you go. This worked well on my cast iron Delco Remmy end plate. Anything made from aluminum would be a prone to pushing the nut thru the aluminum cast.

    My dad switched his 1950 Chevy 4400 farm truck to 12 volts back when I was a teenager.
    All he did was change the voltage regulator and all lights and put a resistor between the ignition switch and coil.
    I believe it is actually easier on the starter because it starts right up , not after 3 or 4 turns. I still have the old truck and I’m getting ready to paint it soon as the weather is right.

    Hey, great video!
    About the felt washer. Obviously there has been a mistake in the information but as a student of “Old Timer” thinking I believe it would be good practice to place the felt washer away from the bearing. I feel like the felt would create problems with the bearing.

    • @TheJayhawker

      Don't use grease anywhere on starters and generators. It collects dirt and holds it, which is a bad deal for electrical motors.

    • @TheJayhawker
      @TheJayhawker  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure, I've never looked into it. I wonder if a Buick starter from around the same year models would bolt up. They seem to be very similar and the Buick has the solenoid. All you would have to add is a push button in the cab if it does.

    • @Mr50pop
      @Mr50pop 3 роки тому

      You could use a 50s starter on the car but you won't have foot start you'll have push button start also you have to space up your battery tray because it will hit the solenoid I did this to my 41 I didn't care for the foot button start because they developed connection issues

      Yes polarize the generator by touching ARM to BATT momentarily with a jumper lead. With generators you won't show any charge at idle. Rev the engine up to about 1000 rpm and see what the gauge does.
