the first time i felt that way was around the mid-70's... when pads got bigger, face-masks were mandatory except for kickers AND when head-hunting became a kind of rule of the turf. Darryl Stingley paid the biggest price. (but we don't know the trickle-down effect to HS play across the country).. and then, ol' Buddy Ryan and that guy in New Orleans start putting out bounties on players... somebody once cut LT at the ankles and that was a quick mistake.
Great Video, Great Defensive Teams! I'm an old man now! But watching those Defenses hit their opponents made my heart soar! & a tear to my eye because those Football Defensive Teams won't be seen again! Not in my life time! Football is now entertainment for the TV QB's & the bar bullies! 3 hours of commercials! where between commercials sometimes a football game breaks out? TV talking heads tell you what you're seeing and the refs actually call out the penalties! Instead of when only ex players knew from the officials hand signals what the penalties were! Like a secret decoder ring! That could only be unlocked by Ex Peewee to the Pro Players! It was our game! Now it's everyone's? whether you suited up and strapped it on or not? I still love Football! And can remember when ALL coaches wore shirts, ties, sport jackets and fedoras! And head coaches would meet at mid field during warm ups shake and greet one another before the Battle! Often wondered what they really talked about? Like when Coach Halas & Coach Lombardi smiled and spoke to one another? Love watching these older Football Videos! For me? It recharges the Brain Housing Group! For the Youngins? It should be a view into the past when Football was Great and played in an Hour! Unless a bunch of penalties! Then hour & a half! CMTFU TMI!
I remember watching Kenny Anderson lead our beloved Bengals into battle with my pops in the 70’s. Simpler times. Better times. RIP Pops. Always missing you, but it does seem to tug more around the beginning of the football season 🥲
I saw these defenses play. They are legends and heroes to us. I put Jack Lambert just behind Butkus. What a great compliment from a def. cord. NFL sure has changed alot.
Yes sir. 53 yr old Eagles fan here. Just remember the 80 SB when the Raiders handed us our ass. Lester Hayes had Stickum on his gloves. Shit it was smeared on his helmet. Came in a can. Stickum should have a display in the HOF as a WTF.
I'm an old NFL fan. 60 years. I appreciate seeing football change over the years. Sometimes the ideas are good, sometimes bad, and sometimes really don't make a difference Like this video shows, it used to be a bar fight. Now the game is more finesse. Player safety is now more of a priority. The players are elite athletes now and science/math is an intricate part of the game like never before. Still, it is an art. And as is all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Go Ravens!!!
QBs had to be tough then. I was so stoked when the Raiders came to LA. One thing I'd have changed tho: Commitment to Intimidation- their excellence. Speaking of Joe Green, check him (and other 70s NFL greats) in The Black Six..a moto-movie
Most people dont remember Chris Berman put out a video called "MVP...Most Viscious Pops" in the early 80's..i loved it...but i also understand why the current NFL is trying to reduce lifelong injuries to players..its all about the lawsuits..but if we want a true gladiator sport like it used to be, we hafta accept the ramifications of it too.
Thankfully this documentary does include actual tough teams, and omits the pretender Cowboys, who folded up like a napkin if they didn't unquestionably have the upper hand. It is interesting that the fawning over the Raiders and Jack Tatum doesn't mention Darryl Stingley. Stingley in a wheelchair is the real story of the 1970s NFL, but it is rarely mentioned - too frightening for the PR machine. Besides - the guys that returned from WWII and played in the 1950s were the actual tough guys. Those men had very different ideas about the words 'safe' and 'dangerous.'
There is a post on youtube of an interview with William Fritz Afflis better known as former pro wrestling great Dick The Bruiser ,telling about his time with the Greenbay Packers in the 1950's,there were no face masks on the helmets then and Bruiser talked about getting his nose broken, teeth knocked out,but it wasn't that big a deal to him,but other players would be moaning and crying about having the same injuries, and Dick said he'd look at them and think, what's wrong with them? Guess they don't handle pain very well, but Bruiser was tough as they come,he could take it lol.
Yes is do.. Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones... Folded when they played the Vikes in zero degree weather.. Deacon Jones said and I quote " I new we lost when we stepped off the bus." 😂😂
The only 2 changes in the rules I’d keep from all the years ago? Would be the elimination clothe line tackles and head shots in the hitting department.North American football-in both the U.S. and Canada- was much more an “ at your own risk “ type of game in those times. It’s truly much less so now unfortunately. And commercial breaks after change of possessions are so beyond annoying………
Refs would blow the whistle if a defensive player got within 5 feet of girly QBs like Brady! Imagine Mike Curtis, Ray Nitschke, or Butkis twisting his helmet off?? 🤭
born in pittsburgh, watching the games and seeing the players standing for our anthem makes me proud , today they are just over paid idiots who could never match the old days
Today they employ the Tom Brady Rule ... immediately blowing whistle when defender is 20 ft from QB! Imagine Brady getting hit by real men like Butkis, Nitschke, Deacon Jones, Karras .... you can almost hear Brady's whining!!
Jack lambert he would kick your ass period my brothers favorite team and of course the dark Vaders of the nfl they don’t play like this and will never again my boys hey Lester not in the hall of fame bs my favorite coach jack made see stars
Lambert? Tatum? I'll guess you mean Lambert and he was great - always love the clip of him pushing Cliff Harris around. Chuck Bednarik was probably even tougher. There used to be several truly great middle linebackers - Ray Nitschke, Willie Lanier, and of course, the incomparable Dick Butkus. You could build a defense around any of them.
I've been a Steelers fan since 71' the defenses portrayed were the most feared and most physical ! The current NFL created by God- Dell is a horrible product!
Everyone on the field, including the referees, would be locked up for attempted murder in today's style of football. Cut from a different cloth? More like came from a different planet. Damn how I miss Madden !!
Now they seem to be playing a game of patty-cake, the only players who hit the ground are the ball carrier and the tackler softly hit the ground, woke politics and sissy rules have ruined the game. I don't even watch the super bowl, I was a die-hard fan being born in 1954, I believe the NFL no longer exists, and modern fans are missing out on the real game.
Real football. Not the powderpuff game it is now. Not long it will be a penalty to scare a quarterback... I used to watch every sunday and Monday. Not anymore. Powerpuff football.

Most of the quarterbacks and others would have never had the records they hold today if they played back in those times.
those were football men, not the boys ya see now
That includes Tom Brady. Tom Brady would have not played as long as he did if he played in the 1970s and 1980’s.
I always say that, and people get very mad at me
Imagine BEFORE those time! Of course, there was never any football played before there was a "Super Bow!"

That was real football and that's why we played it that way up in to the 90s. Today is literally 1 step away from flag football.
LOVE these NFL FILMS...had em all on VHS.....and being a Steelers fan...and hating the Raiders....
Mike Ditka, Mike Curtis, Jack Youngblood , Jack Lambert, Lyle Alzado were some of the best and hardest hitters in the NFL.
