    I was given an se2a for christmas in 1978 by my uncle. I was 7 and it was the best present ever . I always thought of it as an object halfway between the child world and the adult world , never as part of my toy collection. i put gallons of meths through it and eventually wore the piston out.
    Years later when my son was about 10, I turned a new brass piston on the lathe and fired it up in front of him and his friend . My son thought it was cool and I could see a little of me 40 years back in him. His friend stared at it for a few minutes silently waiting for the steam to build; and then the first spin of the flywheel: He said 'Is that all it does?' 'Yes' i replied quietly. 'that all it does.'
    The smell of steam ,oil and meths was enough for me at 7. You just cant compete with games consoles.

      Thats wonderful Simon. You must have been blown away aged 7. Yeah i know with kids about 15 years ago we took my stepson then aged about 9 on a fully working half scale steam engine railway. I thought it was amazing. All i got once the train was rolling along "is this how fast it goes" LOL

    you have done a great job of restoring that Mamod stationary steam engine back to working order. a few years ago two people i know gave me three Mamod portable steam engines to restore to working order two of them where traction engines and the other was a steam roller.
    over the years that i have taken them to shows in France a lot of people have told me how they had a similar Mamod steam engine when they where kids which they had great fun steaming up.

    Congratulations, you attended to the task with TLC and the result is fantastic.
    Hope your young son will follow in your footsteps instead of messing around with phones and pads !

    I have a SE2A. It's not superheated like yours. Runs a dream, it is very quiet though. It was my first stationary engine in my collection.

    Lots of elbow grease but you did a great job. It looks like new my friend. If I didn't know any better I'd say you ordered a new one. It seems to have loads of usable torque as well Fred. Congratulations. Your channel is getting so popular that you have the local fly club zooming over for a look-see. lol

    I'd really love to know your process on cleaning/polishing the brass. I'm in the process of restoring my late-grandfathers and that's something I want to do right.

    if the helicopter is blue and yellow its a police one. By the way nice restoration fred, you need to change the bolts for pop rivets nice job though. :)

      Thanks. LOL i learned a lesson with rivets on the 77 Roadster when i had to drill them out to perform a repair. Went with brass bolts this time to make a strip down easier.

    I have one of these, mine for about 60 years. Just going to try and get it going after years in the loft. I shall add oil and de-scale but a bit bothered that the soldered joints might leak. Did you have to re-solder any joints and if you did what did you use?

    How is the driveband attached onto the workshop? Does it come unattached on one end or is it fitted when it arrives?

    • @UK-CB-RADIO
      @UK-CB-RADIO  4 роки тому

      There is a drive pulley on the back side of the flywheel. The spring drive band was bought from ebay.
