    Your content is so different from other youtubers ! This is truly eye opening.. you don't force anything and still progress ! You only do a handful of things, others recommend this and that and I wonder how much I need to do. Unbelievable that English is your only 5th language ❤

    • @heyitsmigu

      The problem is: when you start doing too many things at once, you won't see and experience much progress. It's as simple as that. I mean, what do you actually need ? Learn basic grammar, work on your listening and reading skills and apply what you learn in real-life situations. That's it and I'm not joking 🤣 most language youtubers (there are exceptions of course, Luca Lampariello is the real deal) are people that haven't reached a very advanced level in a language except their mother tongue. So all they do is document their journey, so the "advice" they give isn't really advice. Although it looks like it 🤭

    I'm currently learning Italian, Spanish, and Esperanto. And you're learning basically how I coined my learning. I spend time listening to podcasts through the day, I read transcripts, learn new phrases, record myself, try out phrases throughout the day, and end the day with a 30 minute tv series in a foreign language. I should be fluent by this time next year. Good luck on your language learning!! Great video!

    The same realisation happened to me. Firstly, I was consuming anything I found, since I wouldn't understand so much of it anyway. Then I realized that instead of just spending hours and hours of random immersion just for the sake of saying "I did immerse", I started to do the things I like to do in my daily life, but in my target language instead. Since then, everything has changed. My comprehension level did go up fast, and I even started to communicate briefly with people. 계속 하세요!

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      Let's not forget that immersion only works when you listen/watch/read stuff slightly above your level ! I hear more often then I would like "I watch k-dramas (as a beginner)".. as a beginner this is tough ! 😳

    • @saucesoja6861
      @saucesoja6861 Рік тому

      @@heyitsmigu I agree that it is tough. Still, I don't think that it's worthless either. If you are an absolute beginner, to be honest, probably nothing is slightly above your level. Or it's very boring.
      If you can accept the idea that you would not understand everything from the start, it's easier to process. And for the slightly above your level thing, it's possible to focus on the comprehension of little dialogues in daily life scenes. There are plenty of them in Dramas, besides more complicated stuff.
      Of course, if your goal is to learn very fast, you should only focus on more easy content, like you suggest. But sometimes I prefer to consume what I like, even if the price to pay is that it takes more time.

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому +1

      You are absolutely right ! Ideally there's a balance between understanding and enjkying it. The only reason I don't really "recommend" to people what you say is this: it's very easy to fall into the trap of spending time just doing that and not see any progress (making you feel giving up way quicker than needs to be) 😯 for beginners (as in language learning beginners) it's difficult to keep going, to see progress, to enjoy the journey and so on 🤭
      Depending on what language you are learning (for example Korean, Japanese,.. ) there's plenty of cool stuff out there for beginners as it is for advanced learners ! 🤭 but other languages (like Thai,.. ) it's difficult to find something interesting (or even good for that matter) in the beginning 😯

    I'm so glad you made this video - my goal this month is simplify everything and get rid of everything else, lol. I definitely have too much in general - less is more! I have too many resources for everything and of course, I get so confused and overwhelmed and feel like giving up! I'm sorry I sound a bit negative, and I don't mean to, it is just that I made this mistake last month of not having a better system of studying and maybe it was my fault, I was not having a good routine. So right now i just feel stuck and like giving up, I hope this feeling is temporary and it too shall pass!!

      Just remember this when you get lost/confused: learning languages is a lot like learning instruments. The more instruments you learn to play, the less you progress in each of them. The less progress you see/experience, the less you get to use the language (in real life). The less you use it, the less fun it becomes 😌

    • @sheeliekittie9298
      @sheeliekittie9298 Рік тому +1

      @Hey It's Migu ! this is so true and makes perfect sense. I get overwhelmed with the idea of 10 languages and I don't think this is a fun or effective way to study and maintain languages. How do you decide which language to keep? And is it ever ok to let go of a language that maybe isn't what you expected or you just don't feel it is meant for you any longer? I really like this analogy you give! Like with instruments. Less is more and I'm just not sure how to decide. What languages I keep and which ones I can give up. Thank you Migu :)

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      Now, it's very simple for me. I like to learn languages because of people. It's not because of manga, anime, tv shows (insert any other reason that doesn't involve "interacting with local native speakers"). Anything that makes me actively use the language is a keeper 😊 However there are exceptions: I learned Italian when I was younger, then I traveled to Italy, came back and dropped it. I spent 6 months in Thailand, learned the language, loved the people so much and it was super fun, came back and dropped the language. I do not consider this a waste of time, because I will learn Thai for sure. I will be in Korea for 1 and a half months soon, but next year will most likely be Thailand (or Japan) and of course, I'll do anything I can to learn the language and use it. This is my philosophy 😌🤭 PS: I would drop any language that isn't for me as soon as possible ! (In my case it was Italian)

    hey I’m sorry to be a burden , just wanted to inquire you about something
    you said that listening + reading at the same time improve listening comprehension, so when you take off the subs can you understand everything? would you mind expounding on that ?

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому +1

      Not at all ! I'm here to help !
      In the beginning it's important to be able visualise the words you hear, because "listening" to content is very tiring and difficult. Simply because you have no influence over what and how things will be said. If you have trouble already hearing clearly what is being said, then without it it will be very tricky. With time subs will be less and less important, because you'll get used to hearing the most common words and it will "only" be useful for the more specific words. And after a while, subs will still be useful but not really needed, no matter if you understand everything or not, because you will guess what the unknown words are 🤭 is this helpful ?

      @@heyitsmigu I just bought a random Thai textbook to learn alphabet, grammar and some sentences and I didn't use any apps or other tools. I think Thai learning, the most important thing is to learn vocabularies as many as possible since its grammar is very simple. So my main method is watching Thai UA-cam videos with Thai subtitles, when I don't know the word I will pause it and translate ever single word. But my big problem is most of the Thai videos haven't Thai subtitles or some videos which the subtitles' writing form are a bit different from what I learned in the textbook😅 So even though I started learning Thai one and a half year ago, but I have been learning it on and off because of less resources, and I'm still at a upper-beginner level.
      I learn Thai because I love learning many languages! 😃 Actually I've learned more than 15 languages so far, sure... I don't really know all of these languages and some of them which I just dabbled in it 😁 And I found Thai dramas are so interesting, so my goal is to watch Thai dramas without subtitles but can understand about 80% of the content :)

But finding English subs for Thai show is quite easy 😯 do you have Thai friends ? (They are so so nice !!)

    does listening and reading at the same time improve listening comprehension?

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому +1

      Yes, exactly. Because if you don't recognize a word when you hear, maybe you recognize it when you read it. And because if you don't recognize it when you read it, maybe you'll recognize it when you hear it. In other words, you learn either way 😊

    i'm brazilian and i'm studying english, i saw a routine like 15 minutes of revision, 30 minutes of study, 15 minutes of revision. But I don't know exactly what to do in those 30 minutes... (Would watching/reading something and writing down words you don't know and putting the word and example sentences + audio into Anki be effective?) I really don't know.

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      30 minutes of study is a good start ! Personally, I always recommend using a textbook that comes with audio and lots of useful sentences ! ✌️ because it has a structure and you will not lose time thinking about what to do

    • @heyitsmigu

    PS - are you sure you are doing your math correctly ;-) I would include your Korean as languages you are definitely fluent in! Maybe we have different definitions of what it means? Well I used to think it meant 'perfect grammar' but now I think fluency is being able to comfortably talk and understand others, and talk in a comfortable, fluid manner, which you definitely do in Korean! I'm curious to know if you learned or plan to learn Japanese, since you like manga quite a bit - I assumed manga was always related to the Japanese language. Just curious =)

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      No no no no ! I am far away from being fluent in Korean ! I know exactly what "fluency is" 🤭 of course, I'd love to know how to speak Japanese, but I haven't tried it, yet ! Besides Japanese there's Chinese and Thai I'd like to learn, too 😌

    • @sheeliekittie9298
      @sheeliekittie9298 Рік тому +1

      @Hey It's Migu ! oh! I worry...maybe I'm really bad as a language learner...maybe I am not at all fluent in anything, I don't feel good with any language. May I ask how you measure this idea of fluency? being able to speak and communicate with others in the different language...it's not enough? If, I can hold a basic conversation and engage with native speakers even if it's only a basic level. What are your thoughts on that? If that is my main goal.
      Also, my grammar in other languages is not perfect but I still make many mistakes :( but if I can still communicate and others understand me, is it ok not to worry that much about the grammar?

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      I don't measure anything. The same goes for when I start learning a language. (Some might think this is weird.) My definition of being fluent is this: "The ability to interact, without creating trouble, in any given situation with native speakers in a country where that language is spoken." Don't worry, native speaker also make mistakes (more than they'd like to admit) ! 🤣
      Personally, I wouldn't worry that much about grammar. You'll get the hang out of it with time and practice (through communicating with native speakers). However, this is not to say "don't learn grammar" ! It's super important to know how the language works, but only up until a certain point 😊 I hope this helps ! ✌️

    • @sheeliekittie9298
      @sheeliekittie9298 Рік тому

      @@heyitsmigu you are my hero! lol, i'm so glad you are very laid-back you have a relaxed approach, and in fact, it seems to work better for progress. it seems that sometimes I stress out and I worry too much, so then I actually do not make progress at all.
      I'm so glad that you also say, we should not worry that much about the grammar. absolutely it's important. but it doesn't mean I have to feel i don't know the language. even though my grammar for example in portuguese it is not perfect, when I speak most people seem to understand me lol! so that helps! and of course i will continue to study and improve, with the vocabulary and grammar, but I'm glad I can still communicate with some degree of fluency even if the grammar is not perfect.

    • @heyitsmigu
      @heyitsmigu  Рік тому

      I just try to have a simple approach, I'm really not a fan of stress 🤭
      You see ! No one really cares 😁 (unless you are taking exams lol) whenever you have doubts tell yourself: "it's not about the language, it's about the people I interact" 🤭 my Korean is good enough, but I still make many mistakes and there's so much I don't understand.. so sometimes I doubt myself, but then I just think about how I feel when I interact with Korean people and all the worries just go away, because all I care about is having fun with them, not about how well I speak !
      Btw I made a video about how I learnt Korean. I talk about what I used, but also how I went from nothing to intermediate 🙈
