Is the Fujifilm X100F the perfect street photography camera? Well, I think it is a camera that teaches us that photography is not about perfection. It is all the imperfect people and candid moments what make life beautiful.

The lens on the X100F is actually integrated inside the body, that's why it seems so much smaller.
Plus it is leaf shutter, which is a much different design.
And the leaf shutter is also the reason why this camera is so notoriously expensive.
I definitely agree about how understated they are.
I carry an X100F/X-Pro2 combo for weddings, and it makes things like cocktail hour a breeze. People usually don't even notice that I'm the wedding photographer, and if I had a D850 I wouldn't be able to capture the same style of photos.
Exactly my reason for this rig. I get more looks like "Oh what a neat looking camera' expressions when I take pictures of people. Now, with my D800 with even a small lems, their reactions are more like, 'Why are you taking a picture of me'? This is THE street camera for me.
@@corot33 there have been a handful of times that I've considered selling it, but every time something comes up that stops me. Just last night I was shooting a wedding, and the reception was outdoors in almost complete darkness. The combination of the OVF and built in flash on the X100F made the dance floor shootable after the sun had set. You can do crazy stuff with that combo. I was shooting handheld at 1/8th of a second and because of front curtain flash there is no motion blur or hand shake. I have no idea what I could have done without it.
I think in 2019, the X100f makes for a tricky proposition when the recently discounted X-T2 and XF23 F2 can be had for the same price. That said, regardless of all the advantages an X-T2 has over the X100F (eg: weather resistance, ability to exchange lenses) and the XF 23 F2 has over the X100F's 23mm (eg: better sharpness at f/2, faster focusing), the X100F still has something special (not including it's Hybrid Viewfinder and Leaf Shutter).
There is something about a 'fixed' lens that forces the photographer to not obsess or over-think. For me, it's a more engaging experience as it frees me up to just shoot.
Kris I know exactly what you mean.
Limitations are liberating. It takes one more variable out of your thought process. The x100f is small enough that even for semi-pro travel photographers, if money isn't too big of an object, it is a great, great second body to have around on your persons. I personally walk around with an a7iii 28-75 tamron and an x100f and yeah. When you get into populated and dense areas for street photography, the x100f is the perfect stealth assassin.
@@henlolneh - lol, I also have a7III and lean to x100f for something smaller. A7's starting from first generation became quite heavy and fat...;) The style of fuji is also nice change.
Really like that moody feel and the low light effects. Your photos look amazing. I guess once you find a camera with features that speak to your style, you're golden regardless of the price. Buying an used camera to play with is the way to go.
Maria and Nabol - Food & Travel Videos Thank you! I make car analogies a lot and cameras are very similar to cars in a lot of weird ways. It’s a very personal choice and they depreciate in value very quickly haha
X100F is indeed like Golf GTI! An interesting and adequate analogy!
People are not intimidated by the camera, and therefore are more open to being shot! Exactly!
I’d take Fuji over Leica any day
Leica film cameras are badass...Their digitals, not so much. Their glass is insane. I use a few vintage Leica lenses on my X-T2.
Not me! I would kill for a Leica Q and/or an M6.
I've had my X100F for about 14 months now, and I really love it. I've shot over 24,000 images with it in that time. BUUUUT, I could certainly get down with a Leica Q.
Bullshit......if you can’t afford one don’t talk poop
I've shot some with a Leica QP and I own a x100f. Like the above comment says, Leica's glass is amazing and the qp was an awesome camera to use. I found that the images I took with the qp tend to look better due to contrast but otherwise the x100f is a great camera for the money.
@@Karma28217 I am mostly a Pentas/Ricoh user. I got a Leica C-Lux, and I most say that, if you want only one camera for travel and want high image quality and insane zoom, this is it.
It is actually the fourth generation. X100 (1st), X100S (S for second), X100T (T for third) and X100F (F for fourth), next up is the X100V (Roman numeral V for fifth since they already used the F for fourth)
Another great day video. I have the X100S. Such a great range of cameras. The 100s has enough features for me at a fraction of the cost of the later models. Keep these videos coming. Great images by the way. It seems that the overwhelming majority of your viewers definitely care what you have to say. Unbiased and real world reviews
X100F is fourth gen. A little hint: S means second, T third, F fourth, and the new fifth gen wil be the roman numeral for five - V.
Great video mate. Lets not forget this camera has a Leaf shutter..... / flash, say no more.
Do you use the flash with the TCL 50mm fov?
Great review man, I think that if a camera makes you want to go out and take pictures, that's the right one for you.
Wasn`t expecting this, this guy made the best review for the X100f on youtube. Also, he`s 100% right about the OVF. EVFs suck, optical rules !
I like your street photography. You should show more of it.
Kodachrome40 Thank you!
Bought mine in December 2019. It had to go back to Fujifilm for warranty servicing..there is a 'blind' which covers the EVF viewfinder when LCD screen only viewing is chosen. The EVF window blind on mine was stuck halfway down and would not go down properly. Fujifilm customer service recommended I send the camera to an authorized Fujifilm service center so that's what I did. Got it back and everything seems to be fine now. I see on the internet there are others who have had this issue with the Fujifilm X100F. Other than that issue I had; mine takes sharp properly exposed photos and I like the styling; reminds me of classic rangefinder 35mm film cameras.
Having a smaller camera doesn't help me to calm my subjects. Either that or the gun sounds I make when I hit the shutter.
idk, I'll do some tests.
"Golf GTI of cameras" is a great analogy! A driver's car, a photographer's camera.
Moishe Lettvin glad you enjoyed it :)
I just picked mine up for $900 in Silver 10/10 condition with the manuals, box, and extra accessories. Such a beautiful camera. I was going to get the X100V but the price is not worth it and I really like the D-Pad on the F because they remove the D-Pad in the V.
Great Review. Thanks. I got my Fuji x100f last month.
The x100f seems like a solid little camera that can get some great results! It's not perfect, it doesn't have all the features, but it get's the job done and at a great price too. Awesome review Ralph!
Lol senpai, I like how you can justify with so much confidence that $1200 is a bargain. I gotta practice your positioning so my wife would let me buy more expensive toys! 🔥
Food Mystery Live hahaha another trick is...
Wife: “is that a new camera??”
Me: “yeah I sold one of the other ones.” (Still hiding in the giant pile of cameras...)
Food Mystery Live Remember the man’s creed: Forgiveness is easier obtained than permission 😎
@@HyunRalphJeong been there, done that 😂
Food Mystery Live Hahahah that’s right Hahahah
I tell my wife that the SOOC processing for all the film emulations eliminate the need to buy more editing software. It's like having the editor built in for the money...that's my story...
One of the ways they kept the lens short is they moved the sensor deeper into the body.
The X100F is the fourth generation. That‘s actually what the „F“ stands for. The first generation was the X100, the second generation was the X100S and the third generation was the X100T (S: second, T: third, F: fourth). And for the fifth generation they won‘t be able to use „F“ again so that‘s why it‘s going to be „V“ probably.
Ah that makes perfect sense now haha thanks
What will they call the model which will eventually replace the x100U? :-)
The X100F has made me insanely happy. No, it's not cheap, but it is awesome. I bought mine this year and have no regrets at all. It is so much fun, I never leave home without it - whereas my old Canon system often gathered dust because I couldn't be bothered to take it with me. I have the X-T30 too but it's the X100F that I truly love.
Nicholas Kellingley It seems to do that to people haha
I agree with you about optical viewfinders.
Great job on this review mate! Definitely sold me on it, looking forward to shooting it :)
“Imagine you replace all windows in your house with an LCD screen” 💯
It's true that I clicked on this video because I bought a used X100F just under a year ago, but I want to know how someone else new to the camera feels about it as a check on my own opinion. I purchased mine because, compared to modern DSLR and mirrorless cameras, the X100F is limited. You are almost forced into making pictures differently, which I like from an artistic perspective. I actually kind of like that it's slower and that you have to bring the camera to your eye to take a photo. It changes how I perceive my intent to make a photo... no longer do l take a dozen photos and hope one looks good after I edit it, but rather I take one, maybe two, and know that they'll look the way I want them to. It's a challenge, but it's not a challenge I'd recommend to just anyone.
Michael Heath Yeah, it’s like shooting film or driving a manual transmission car. Less convenient, but some people still prefer it because you feel more connected.
Just to elaborate a bit more on the max mechanical shutter .. yes as you said it is 1/4000th; but what would be important to mention for those unfamiliar with an X100 series, or haven't used one. If you're wide-open at F/2 it's 1/1000th (leaf shutter properties) This is more or less the main reason for the ND filter
This is a really interesting point you have brought up. I shoot full manual, 90% of the time. And I have used faster SS than 1/1000th many, many, many times. (At f/2) With no apparent ill effects. Although Fuji recommends not to do so. My X100T is going on 50,000 mechanical shutter activations, and still operates more or less flawlessly. Not recommending to others to exceed the recommended SS of course, but I have never been one to follow rules myself. :-)
It also has an absurdly fast electronic shutter - 1/32,000 or something crazy. I've a handful of shots using the electronic shutter because I have the camera set to use both, and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. I just didn't realize it was happening at the time, otherwise I'd have turned on the ND....!
That's what I like about this camera. I shoot in aperture priority with auto ISO and I can just focus on taking pictures, not all the technical stuff.
The F is the forth edition actually. Hence the “F”. You should try the x100 original. I just picked up one recently. It is slow AF!! But there’s something about the Bayer sensor. I read a lot about this when looking for an affordable used x100F and came across a used x100 original for $350 CAD. Couldn’t let it pass and I am so happy with this camera. I was thinking of also picking up the F version until I heard the V or whatever the name will be is releasing soon.
I picked up an X100F some weeks ago and it seemed to me the focusing speed was really great. Perhaps it's because I had an X100 a few years ago and that was really slow. Awaiting the X100 whatever anyway.
I wish they'd make the lens more engaging for manual focus enthusiasts (distance scale, focus throw, maybe a focusing tab). I'm not sure if that's possible with the technology they use, I guess. It'd be really cool. They'd kill Leica with that.
In Japan, at this time it cost 6万円 it equates to 600 dollars. I just bought this yesterday, it will be arriving home at the weekend, what you say that makes sense to me, cool review.
Enjoy your new camera :) I had a lot of fun with it.
The X100F is my dream camera. I have it’s little brother, the X70, and love the size and simplicity of design. I take it with me everywhere.
I've thought about that X70 , as I've been using an X20 lately and love it. But the X70 seems like an upgrade for a quick street carry everywhere camera. I've thought about a Ricoh GR koi but I've had Ricohs and they break down too easy. X70 and X100F are in my future , that's what I just decided !

@@larrymccormick3226 You guys may be interested in Ming Thein's review last week of the XF10. He usually disses Fuji, but he liked the XF10. He said that the image quality is close to the Nikon Z7. It sounds like it started with bad AF and then got significant firmware improvements: blog.mingthein.com/2019/10/02/review-fuji-xf10/
I’m new to your channel but wow. Awesome video! You talked the whole time and I was intrigued through the end. Great speech skills. Keep these videos coming forever.
One of the first things I learned to do was how to adjust my ISO and shutter speeds by using dials while looking through the viewfinder.
The ISO bug you mentioned happens in my X100V when i set SHUTTER AE to OFF.
On the viewfinder the ISO stays on the maximum but if you take the picture the ISO is changing according to the light.
Great review Hyun! I discovered your account recently and I must say thar you do an amazing work, congrats!
Marco Wolf Thank you! Really appreciate the comment
Hey Ralph cool review 👌😃 This is a nice camera. Size feels comfortable to carry 😉👍 I like this style of camera🙂
$1200 for a camera with one fixed lens doesn't quite seem like something I would need for my purposes but man... I really love the looks of this camera. Modern Vintage for sure. I love carrying around smaller cameras like this because it's not as intrusive. I feel like whenever I carry around my DSLR, my subjects definitely freeze a bit and get intimidated. For the purposes this camera was made for I can definitely see the attraction. BTW, I am more of an M2 guy but GTI is cool too lol.
Haha the M2 is definitely nice
Pick up an X100S or X100T if you can find a deal on them. Avoid the upgrade wars and latest/greatest syndrome. . I refuse to partake in it. For digital, I shoot with an X100T, X-T20, X-T2, and a Nikon D810.
@@barrycohen311 I still use my d700 haha. How do you like d810?
Enjoyed the review. I was also puzzled by the high ISO display and thought the camera was defaulting to highest ISO. Thanks for clarifying.
Nice video. To respond to your question why the 23mm on X100F is like a pancake compared to the 23mm f/2 lens. The lens on the X100F the lens is also halfway inside the camera body. Unlike the 23mm lens for the XT cameras isn't.
i was about to say that. also, while the XF 23mm f2 has internal focus, the 23mm f2 @ the X100F focus outside the lens body.
I thought I’d search for this comment before posting myself. I believe that is the reason why the tripod mount isn’t directly under the lens and is instead offset.
The 23mm isn't sharp at f2 when you are creating a blurry background. The photos you showed are in a low light situation aaannnd the subject is pretty far away from the lens. The 23mm really shows its unsharp qualities when you are trying to say take a picture of a flower... or a subject is close to the lens and the background is falling quickly out of focus. But I do agree its pretty rare i'd be using it at f2..... but I would if it was sharp lol...
I use one and love the quality and the leaf shutter! It's a fantastic camera
Agreed, I own many cameras, and my X100T is still my favorite for travel and in cases where I want something small.
Since i use the X100 series cameras (i had the x100s and now the x100f) i take much more photos. Because its so small that there is no excuse not to take in anywhere with me :)
It's the fourth (4th) generation of X100 cameras: X100 (First); X100S (Second); X100T (Third); and X100F (Fourth)
which is what the trailing letter denotes :) Next could be called y100v like the roman V for five.
Top preview your honesty and attitude shines through... still got my X1OOT XT2 combo.. love Fuji cameras..... now where did I leave my GTi....
Ahahahaha, your Golf GTI reference killed me. Thinking of picking up one of these today. Great video man, thanks!
Thank you! I really like your videos, they are genuine. What's your thoughts about the fuji 27mm pancake lens? I think coupled with an xt2 or xt3 it could be a cheaper alternative to the x100f.
Thank you! Apparently the optical viewfinder makes the cameras like the X100 or Xpros more expensive to make. The XT2 or XT3 are better values. I actually never owned the 27mm lens but I heard good things about it.
Have been impressed with the Fuji line watching your review series. This looks like another great product. Trying to step up our photo game always learn a lot from these vlogs.
The X100F lens' flat rendering of objects is distracting; I have one. Leica is expensive but looks far more natural; still saving up for one.
I enjoyed your metaphors comparing this camera to a Golf GTI, I own both, and absolutely love both. Cheers
Do you think this camera is better than the iphone XS and 11 cameras?
Why are photographers so obsessed about what they think their gear will make other photographers think about them? A camera cannot may make people think you know what you’re doing. But it doesnt mean you actually do
09:10: It's the 4th gen. F stands for Fourth.
I had no idea. Lol.
I love your reviews and I'm just an amateur who loves to take photos on my phone! Greetings from Mexico!
Great Video Hyun!!!!
Thank you!
the iso is correct shown on the camera - camera shows u the iso autosettings... it goes to max 3200...
I have the xe3 which I love. Does the x100 have a leaf shutter? Might make lower light shots w/ fill flash interesting. I'm keeping my eyes open for a good used one. Excellent vid. You put a lot of thought into it. Thanks.
The Great Vanzinni! Thank you! And yeah, it has a leaf shutter.
x100f on sale for 799 sooo tempting. Are you still using it?
Would this be something you recommend against as a first camera, with it being as limited as is. I was originally going to buy an 80d with probably a 50mm 1.8 and a 24 mm 2.8. I want to make more street type photos but I also would like to be able to shoot portraits. This camera seems so simple and light to shoot with though. The look of it is cool too.
Tyler Martin I think it will be fine as a first camera but if you want to shoot portraits you might feel a bit limited eventually.
It's the matter of perspective, I found I am more disconnected if shooting with OVF, disconnected from what the camera is seeing and to the end result, because by the end of day, we are taking a photo, not just seeing the world with an artificial eye.
I think the optical finder was added for Leica/Rangefinder fanatics, ex-film camera users, and DSLR users which this is normal for. Having said that, I agree with you, I don't like it much at all myself.
Why do people always buy something they cannot afford to buy then complaining about the price they have to pay.
Great review, and I really like your laid back style. I completely agree with you about how the small form factor puts people more at ease. I am currently shooting street with Sony A7R3 and Sigma 35 art and its really hard to not be obvious and get more close up. I really want to get the X100F for this reason but the only thing holding back is the rumour that the next edition will have a flip out screen which makes for discreetly shooting from the hip (which I like to do) a game changer. I love Vivian Mayer's work which incidentally was all shot on that Rolleiflex camera at waist height looking down into the viewfinder which gives a great perspective. It also doesn't look as obvious to people as camera help to the eye. Keep up the content, you just got a new sub!
Thank you! I really enjoyed the film about her. And yeah, the flip out screen would be great. I tried shooting from my waist/chest with the strap on and haven't been very successful haha
If the new one had weather sealing, and slightly better video with a proper mic jack, Id drop $1600-$2000 gladly. Love my x100f. Its my second one, and regret selling the first one. The guy I sold my first one two on classifieds even texted me a year later talking about how much e loves it still
Haha I've done that with some cameras.
Who the fuk buys Fuji lol.
Leica the GOAT. Beautiful and timeless design, exceptional build quality and Leica makes the GOAT lenses in the world. Aristocracy doesn't mix with peasantry.
Nice review man, I had a few answers for some things you weren’t sure about but others have already answered them. It’s great to see people are still reviewing this camera. I have loved this series ever since the x100s which was my first and I have upgraded each time. It is my favourite camera in the Fuji X lineup. Looking forward to what is in store for the next model.
I’m happy with my X-E3, best of all worlds: size, AF and censor of the X-T2, X-Pro2 but with option to change the lens. Put the 27mm pan cake on it and I have my X100F type camera, albeit without the ND filter. Of course I don’t the in-famous leave shutter but then that’s why it X100F costs what it costs right?
From what I know, the reason why the lens on the X100F is so much smaller, is because it‘s not interchangeable which allowed them to make the whole thing custom. Apparently the distance between the rear lens element and the sensor is extremely small, the rear lens element is basically in the body of the camera. And the lens and sensor are optimized for each other.
Just get a used x100s. It's more camera than you'll ever need.
Stunning pics from Fuji!! I def prefer Fuji over leica anyday!
Nice job on a well balanced review. I love carrying my black X100T as often as I can.
Thank you!
My first Fuji X was a X100T in black. Bought it at a camera store in Denver within the first week it was released and hit the shelves. Mind blowing camera, I still have it. 50,000 shutter count so far.
@@barrycohen311 I bought mine second hand after selling a X100 I also bought used. Such a great value.
I have the original X100 and I wouldn't sell it for anything
Thank you so much! I can't wait to buy this soon
the wrestling photos were great but I was hoping you showed some in color.
the GTI thing is a great analogy, if you know, you know.
Your opinion mattered! Buying one today. Thanks.
Thanks for an honest and comprehensive review! The iso display is not a bug. Actually what it shows is you're in automatic mode and the highest iso you set. No way it can show what iso it's going to choose before you take the picture 😉
I disagree. If the camera is constantly metering (while EVF/LCD is on, for example, the camera meters to balance the EVF/LCD output), it has enough information to give a *guess* about what the ISO should be.
I say this as a loving owner of the X100F, but I can see how this is both annoying and fixable.
Thank you for mentioning that ISO bug, I was so confused! Just got the camera recently and learning how to use it
It’s still $800 used in 2020 lol that’s a used XPro2 rates lol
Great! Love your photos!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed them.
Fujifilm is grunge hipster. Leica is mainstream hipster
Hi, I am torn between the Canon g5x ii and the x100f, do u guys think for street and candid photography, the fixed focal length of the x100f will make the shooting experience more fun and engaging? But then I am also looking for a travel camera, and the g5x with its zoom lens should be a more versatile choice. Any comments?
The lens on the X100 is "burried" inside the body, you can see the sensor sign on the top of the camera is more to the back while on the X-T2/3 is in the middle.
Also on the X100T and F..you can have BOTH OVF and EVF with flick the lever to the left when you're on OVF mode. That is very cool and important if you do manual focus and just to see the exposure.
I would buy any of the ILCs by Fuji and get the same pictures with a ton more flexibility.
As someone who owns and uses X-t's for work, the X100 series serves a completely different purpose. The only Fuji's that comes close to it's size would be an X-E3 or X-A5 with with the 27mm 2.8 pancake lens. The X-E doesn't have the hybrid viewfinder, the X-A has no viewfinder, and neither have the leaf shutter or built in 3 stop ND filter. Those last 2 features add a ton of functionality to the X100 series that none of the Fuji ILC's can match.
Nice review! 8:13 If you would like an Arca-Swiss compatible plate, SUNWAYFOTO PT-26 Universal QR Plate is small enough to allow the battery door to fully open when it is attached.
Fuji.. looks great.. pretty pricey. I like the black and white pictures you took though! "It is all the imperfect people and candid moments what make life beautiful."
Pogiboy Productions thank you!
Comparing with Leicas, they’re cheap.
I just got this camera and am starting to play around with it. So far I'm loving it! Great video also! Looking forward to watching more of your vids. Keep up the good work! :-)
Great info
I don’t use auto ISO much but I believe there is no firmware bug. You need to actually meter the scene to have the suggested ISO come up. Frame up the shot, half press the shutter, and the ISO will display before the shot is taken. Otherwise the camera could have to meter all the time, which would kill the battery.
I think you can see me doing exactly that around 6:26 but it's not changing on the screen. The metering is working, but it's just not displaying the numbers. It only happens in continuous autofocus.
I’m an X-T2 user and I assumed it would be the same. Apparently not - with the T2 your shooting ISO is displayed upon metering regardless of focus mode. Like the 100 series the highest preset ISO value is displayed before metering when in auto ISO mode.
Somebody has this listed for $650 right now. I don’t really need it because I already have an A6600 but it’s cheap so I’m tempted.
Haha I know that feeling. I think you'll be disappointed with its AF performance if you have an A6600.
Hyun Ralph Jeong The auto focus seems fine for most regular pictures. My Sony can do more in video and for fast moving subjects but for walk around shooting this seems like it does okay.
The reason the lens on the X100F is so small is because of the flair shutter. Because of theway that works they could recess the lens into the body more, hence it looking smaller.
Still using a X100s. Waiting on the possible V this year but may pull the trigger on the F if it comes down in price significantly but I want to see what's added to the V first.
Hyun Ralph Jeong...you're putting out some really nice videos. I look forward to each new one so keep them coming please. I've subscribed. Great work sir.
Nice review, thanks for sharing.
Your black and white pictures are amazing! Love all of them. Fuji it's a bit expensive but the same time looks like worth the price.
The Recipe Journal Thank you! Yeah they’re not cheap but they are fun to use
Great observation concerning camera size and peoples attitude.....I own an old LX3...one day the X100F will be mine due to the view finder issue on the old LX3
Man, you’re a great reviewer. Easy to identify with your perspective and viewpoints. The right balance of technical vs practical, and I think that comes from willingness to point out features or performance that when better or worse, you’d never even notice in the real world. Your comments around subject reaction to this x100 vs a big DSLR are spot on and often under appreciated as a “feature”. Thank you for the great video.
I like your car analogy. Really made sense to me. Good review 👍
Awesome thanks for uploading this vid been looking for guidance on how to use mine ✅
That iso bug happened to me with my x-t2, took a while to figure it out.
Is the price going to drop for x100f after the x100v relased?
They usually do but not sure how much.
