    Outdated? 2 years later? 10 years from now it'll still deliver the same way Leica cameras do! Photography is not about specs and the X100 series is legendary and unique and phenomenal! Anyway thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    good review, but i disagree about this camera being a gateway into photography. It's aimed at enthusiasts who know their way around a camera. It's sexy in how it limiting it is, but also how liberating those limitations are. These are the exact things that would frustrate a newbie.
    Why would you spend 1k+ on a camera with fixed 35mm focal length when you don't even know what focal length you mainly shoot at or like?
    Why spend that much to experiment with DoF when you could easily buy an entry level dslr and nifty fifty for less than a fifth of the price?
    Why commit to such a limiting piece of gear when life is FULL of photographic opportunities you could explore with if you had something more versatile?
    Beginners would be way better off playing around with a second hand dslr with kit lens for less than $200, then upgrading as their style develops.
    I love the x100 series, but it's a niceh camera with a very specific vision of photography in mind. Get something cheap and versatile to start off with instead.
    If my first camera was the x100, there's no way I'd appreciate what an awesome piece of gear it is!

      You're right, the X100 is by no means a point and shoot camera for beginners and as much as I like it I bought a Canon DSLR for my wife who wants to learn photography. The X100 was made for serious photographers and it delivers

      I had same thoughts like you. But then they released X-E3. They look kind of similar. Although the x100 looks sexier than the e3 but interchangeable lens body makes it considerable.

      The problem with entry level DSLRs is that they are harder to control manually, you can’t easily control exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings at the same time if you only have a single control dial and a d-pad, so they’re often left in “green” all-auto mode.
      An X100F or an X-T1/2/3/10/20/30 is a much better camera to learn to creatively use exposure on, the Fujifilm controls are pretty intuitive, and unlike some cameras (e.g. Olympus) you hardly ever have to look at a manual. And the 23mm limitation will keep you from acquiring bad habits like not moving around to find a better composition.

      I’m not quite a beginner anymore but also not an expert. I was looking to buy this one but your comment makes sense, and it is a lot of money. Is there a dslr in particular that you would recommend?

      I found fixed focal length is more appropriate, if you want to be a serious photographer, not a snap-shooter who does 1000+ pointless shots in a day. It disciplines you to think more about composition and approach before to make a shot. I had 35mm compact fixed lens film camera Olympus mju2 before digital revolution, and had no problem to shoot almost every type of scene except macro or telephoto - people, nature landscapes, city street, flowers, pets.

    I set the front command dial to adjust the ISO, in the user settings. The rear command dial to adjust the shutter speed, by putting the main shutter speed dial on “T”
    It works great like that, the exposure triangle is at your fingertips. I also think a newbie at photography would end up setting it on auto and not really getting what this camera is truly capable of. This camera is so popular, because of its pro features, versatility in personal settings and high image quality.
    Yes it’s worth owning in 2019. I still use film cameras I’ve had since the 1970’s and create incredible images with them. The photographer takes the image, the camera is only the tool used.
    Thanks for the review!

    Look pal, nice review, cool camera, but 2017 was only two years ago, not very much has changed. I'm shooting the majority of my paid work in NYC on a camera released in 2008 that I've owned for 9 years, and it still provides more than most of my clients need. If we're talking about a fun walk around camera for personal use with a fixed lens, etc., I think we can definitely "forgive it as a 2017 camera."

    Bought a X100F about a month and a half ago. It had to go back to Fujifilm for servicing due to the viewfinder 'shutter/blind' got stuck halfway down the viewfinder window and would not retract the way it's supposed to. Fujifilm servicing did good by me and now it's fine. Really like the looks and feel of the camera and all the built-in features, which I'm still learning how to use. The owner's manual is rather nebulous and seems to be written by geeks for geeks. For example: I could not figure out what 'photometry' meant (it is the metering pattern options) Why didn't they just call it 'metering patterns'? I find the many UA-cam videos are far more useful for learning how to use the camera than the owner's manual. That said; I've taken some really nice images with it so far. Really like the built-in film simulation and filter simulation options. The fixed-focal length I get around by using the built-in digital zoom options to go from 35mm to 75mm equivalent which works fine for me.

    Owned the X100f but the lens really has to be updated or changed. With landscape the field curvarture kicks in. Stopping down even makes it worse. The 23mm primes (f2 or f1.4) give me better results. So traded it for a xt30 with 23mm f2 and are very heapy with it.

  • @pacific-midwest
    @pacific-midwest 5 років тому +5

    'all those specs are fine and dandy, they are a little outdated' Really? It's a fixed 23mm f/2 digital rangefinder. If anything, it's still worth it and far more advanced than some of the current APSC offerings from other makers.
    Why wouldn't you consider comparing it to the Ricoh GRII/III? Have you handled one? Although the FOV is different, they are both fixed, APSC cameras with a similar intended use for street and travel.
    In terms of ISO adjustment, I believe you can map it to the front command dial.

    • @pacific-midwest
      @pacific-midwest 5 років тому

      @Phil Jones65 Focal lengths are totally subjective, especially within the 28mm-50mm range. I understand that 28mm might provide some advantages to crop, but many prefer to compose their shots within camera and use the out of camera JPEGs. 35mm equiv. is a great journalist/street photography camera and can be useful for scenic portraits. If 35mm is not a good FOV, then the X100F is not a good option unless you are open to using the lens conversions.
      There are a couple features that set the X100F apart from other cameras in the lineup. The Hybrid Viewfinder (only shared with the X-Pro series), Leaf Shutter (which may offer some advantages to sync with flashes), and ND Filter.
      The 18mm is a good lens, it just may not be inline with the rest of Fuji's offerings. Fuji's 23mm, 27mm, and 35mm primes are all quite exceptional. The 18mm at f/2 is not center sharp, but not many pancake wide-angles are at their fastest aperture. For general street work, I bet it's quite nice from 2.8 to 5.6. There might be some softness in the edges/corners that just might not ever catch up, but that issue may not be an issue depending on the intended use.
      At the end of the day, the X100F is a fixed camera. That is no fault to the camera. The only fault is to the person purchasing the X100F, expecting it to be something more than what it is. It's just a no-frills, simple camera that:
      - does everything they want
      - is fancy neck jewelry
      - enables photographers to just enjoy shooting and not think about 'which lens should i bring'
      I don't own it. Like you, I prefer an X Body and Primes. That said, I totally get why it is there and what purpose it serves, even if many of the reasons satiate nostalgia.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 років тому

      He mentioned the ND ;) Definitely should've mentioned the leaf-based flash synch, though - that's a major reason to choose it over the X-Pro or X-H1. (Btw, the Panasonic S1 has a 1/320 flash sync - not in the same league as a leaf, but no one seems to mention it.)
      Yes, the OVF affords truly instant responses - Mirrorlessons recommend the X-Pro2 for birding for that reason.
      Also no mention of the conversion lenses - the 50mm FOV goes well with leaf/flash

You don't need to upgrade every other year or get the new model when a new one is announced. The most iconic photos ever taken were taken with gear that has less tech that my apple pencil. The camera will not make you a great Instagram photographer. No matter how new or expensive it is. Stop this shit and talk more about how you can use that tool to take better photos.

    Can you even trust a guy who spells "apature" instead of "aperture"? Pro tip to photography UA-camrs: making videos that ask "Is X camera still good in 2019?" is lazy. Most cameras within the last 5-6 years or even more are still good. Sure, image quality gets slightly better (and I do mean very slightly) and maybe some handling and AF gets better, but on the whole, not that much better. At least, not so much that it fundamentally takes different photos than just a few years ago.

    I am owning this camera and I don't agree with you on many points. It's definitely not for beginners and someone who wants to replace cellphone camera. For that fujifilm gave you XF10. I am sorry but evf is not at all that bad how you present it, you can't compare it with your sony or T3, not only because production year but because they are different price point as well. Focus is slower, yes, again you have to know what you are doing (not for beginners as I said), but all in all not that bad at all if you consider it's size and super small lens. This camera is for ppl that endorse street photography, likes to travel with small camera bag and can even finish some commercial work with it.

    One absolutely phantastic way to use the flash, though, is to trigger an off- camera flash some distance away. Also, the in- built leaf shutter allows sync speeds ANY focal plane shutter cameras would simply drool over.
    I also agree with some coments here; the X100 family not being a gateway drug for beginners. Instead, I see it as an optimal secondary camera for fun shooting, it's for people who know what's in their other camera bag when the tricky shots show up (except for using strobe flash in sunlight, maybe).

    Love the review, very helpful. But one quick 2 cents for people who dont know about that ISO selector, because I've seen a lot of reviewers call it weird or clever. That ISO selector has been around for like 30 years. Many film cameras used that iso mechanism back in the day. (Heres a photo of the old selector timedotcom.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/pentax-2.jpg?quality=85) They're just throwing a retro iso selector onto the camera, its not a new or innovative concept. On the other hand you're right. It is weird. Because in the day of film cameras you would only have to set the iso once when you changed the roll of film. It was made that way so you didn't accidentally change the iso when changing the shutter speed. However today with a lot of people running variable ISO setups its kinda an odd choice on Fuji's part.

      Hawkbadger Fuji don’t really have anywhere else to put it on the camera. Thankfully you can set the front dial for ISO which is what I have always used and it works a damn treat.

    I had one for quite a while. The optical view is beautiful, but not super practical in practice so I was often using the EVF. I had wanted to try that series of camera since the original X100. I eventually traded it in along with my Nikon DSLRs so I could get gear that does a better job in video situations (oddly enough I went with a pair of low cost Canon M50 bodies and lenses, haha). I'm not sure I'd get another X100 series camera at this point. There was a lot to like, but I'd want a lens refresh and weather resistance. I'd probably go with something smaller now like the GR III.

    Purchased one a couple of weeks ago, then followed up with the fitted leather case from Fujifilm. Waiting for adapter ring/49 mm UV/haze filter to protect the lens. Bought it to replace my ancient Sony compact digital camera which still worked fine gave it to my granddaughter. I bought this camera based on the many good reviews, and the control layout similarity to my Nikon FM film SLR. I just wanted something small, easy to carry, easy to use and 'traditional'/'vintage' looking. The shutter speed/ISO setting dial is exactly where it is on most 35 mm film cameras; and the ISO/ASA setting usually operated the same as on the X100F: pull up on the shutter speed dial and rotate to set the ISO/ASA. No big deal. Still used to my Nikon I find myself feeling like I have wind a film wind lever to advance the film and cock the shutter. Other than a missing film wind lever the other controls pretty much fall naturally under my fingers much like my Nikon. That and this camera just has a 'substantial' feel in the hands like a fine photographic instrument. Definite 'thumbs up' so far.

  • @thomasmoje5926

    I purchased my X100F in December 2019. I decided on it after reviewing test articles, videos, etc. about a lot of current digital cameras at the time. I knew I didn't want a bulky DSLR but rather the purpose of a digital camera for me was having something handy and easy to carry as an alternative to my film SLR cameras, but with high build quality and the ability for full manual exposure setting (which I'm used to); and yes, the retro cool looks and 'traditional' control dials. I was somewhat daunted and confused at first by the various exterior control buttons and maze of menu options, but the more I use the camera the more I like it and image quality is excellent. The one complaint I have is I habitually push the 'Q' button by accident with my right thumb when I hold the camera, resulting in the display going to the 'Q' menu at a crucial moment. At first I thought 'WTF is going on here?' then I realized I was accidentally pushing that 'Q' button. Now I am consciously aware not to accidentally push that 'Q' button..if Fuji would have placed that 'Q' button lower down..say closer to the main 'menu' button..would have been better placement but I'm getting used to it. Otherwise I'm really getting to like the camera.

A classic and it is my go to travel camera. I also still own X100 T only 16 mp. Who cares as image quality still stunning and 16mp plenty. @@sonicimperium I do have an idea what I'm talking about, actually. The X100 OVF has a tendency to gather dust particles inside over time. Also, shooting in high humidity (ie my last trip to Bali), the OVF and lens both fogged up. Funny, this problem didn't exist on my xpro2 with the xf35f2/50f2... Likely due to the weather resistant body/lens... Yes, rubber gaskets actually help...

    The X100F is definitely a great Leica Q2 on a budget style camera - and 35mm great for occasional portraits etc - Saying that - the value for money in the Ricoh GR3 as a travel / street pocket camera, with a sharper + wider 28mm lens & IBIS is pretty solid for the price!

    If Fuji is really going to update this camera this year, then there are just too many updates that it needs to justify the price for the current iteration, even used. It needs a new sensor, touch screen that tilts, new EVF, weatherproofing, and a better lens at close focus. That is just too much stuff that needs to be updated. But Fuji, I believe, is just not interested in this camera with everything else they are doing. Which is too bad, because this could be a smartphone killer given they fix all the other stuff AND give it modern communications capability.
