Just to add on the current Genius Sonority situation: most of the staff that worked on the GameCube games have long left the company, so it's not like they could make another game like that right now. But on better news, some of the devs are still very active and seem to hold a dear place for these games. James Turner famously worked as a designer and 3D animator at Game Freak, taking the spot of art director for Sword and Shield, and shared some concept art for XD a while back. Tsukasa Tawada is still composing music and even made arrangements for Colosseum tracks recently

A number of years ago a friend asked me to get him XD as a birthday present. As this was during the Wii era, the only copies i could get at a cheap price were used copies, so i played it myself a few weeks before I gave it him. I always wish we could live in a world where Colosseum/XD spun its own regular spin-off series, where we'd have two series existing side by side with different devs. Game Freak continuing to do their usual thing with the Colosseum/XD being a secondary and maybe more mature series.
Pokémon is an absolutely massive franchise, we have the space for multiple devs handling different parallel series.

Agreed, the snagging mechanics just beg for a continuation of Black & White's Themes alongside the possibilities of either crafting a more traditional RPG experience or something even more experimental through a limited roster of creatures and EXP chances...
It doesn't even have to introduce new Pokémon, just give the spotlight to severely underused ones like the Mythicals of Gens VI - VIII such as Zarude, Zeraora or Volcanion!

    • @Nyzer_
      @Nyzer_ Рік тому +6

@@michaelriverside1139 No, they definitely wouldn't have needed to introduce new ones. Colosseum showed that they could feature Pokemon from a "missing" older generation that otherwise wasn't represented in Gen 3, and that it'd work quite well. Then XD showed that they could mix things up and give a bunch of Pokemon from scattered generations some unique moves, and it'd also work quite well.
It would have been great if the series had continued having one new generation and one remade older gen on the handhelds, then a couple unique console games that had a more Double Battle focus and allowed the player to net some otherwise unseen Pokemon with special moves in the current gen.
Sadly, we live in a world where that not only didn't happen, but transfers and trades have been nerfed and restricted to the point of uselessness.

While I personally enjoy the double battles of Colosseum and Gale of Darkness more than the rest of these games, I do very much respect them for doing something very different while still having the battle system be the same as the main line games aside from Shadow Pokémon.
It’s funny how one of reasons these games even exist at all, was because there were not enough Johto Pokémon in the GBA main line games and you couldn’t transfer Pokémon from Gen 2 to Gen 3, making completing the national dex basically impossible without Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. (Basically Ruby and Sapphire were dexit before Sword and Shield)
Interesting how these games might have never existed at all if the GBA games didn’t have the transfer issue.

    • @icefiredragon94
      @icefiredragon94 Рік тому +5

It was sort of why I found the dexit incident kind of asinine like it only happened to the gen that played gen 4 people onward and the people before were chopped liver. the fact there were quite a bit of repeats from Kanto instead of johto as expected was such a disaster in the forums even when colosseum came out. everyone eventually warmed up to the games and loved it due to the plot and them exploring double battles more than Hoenn originally did though.
With home exisiting though people are gonna have to try and accept some pokemon will be cut out due to the space on the switch (you can hack mons to be anywhere right now but areas arent built to handle certain sizes so larger mons would look off) unless they fit the the habitat themes of a region, without games like Colosseum to make up for it. Since you can just transfer mons you wanna keep at will now anyway. Which honestly i was prepared for anyway considering not every region has habitats for everyone. Would be nice though if they sold side games again by using the transfer issue as an excuse again.

@@icefiredragon94 Wait, so because it happened before, and IMO was rightly panned during Ruby and Sapphire, that it shouldn't be a problem after that problem reappeared?
Also how can 809 Pokemon fit in a 3DS but in the Switch if it is a technological issue?
Also BW had a lot of missing Pokemon in Unova even in post-game and yet they allowed us to transfer any Pokemon from Gen 1-4 through Pal Park.

@@zjzr08 yeah during Ruby/Saph the technical limitation was real, Gen2 to Gen3 was a big jump and many things just didnt transfer over due to coding, but in Sw/Sh it was just Gamefreak trying to force everyone to use the new pokemons, they got tired of seeing people destroy the new game with my boy Blaziken 😂

Your points did make sense! Even at the time pokemon wasnt really, well, overworld but had the illusion of it in the mainline games with how vast they were. every place was purposeful and there distractions. Then again i guess this is another reason to hate game reviewers that are used to being paid off or mainly played shooters for me guess.
I'm sad things happened the way it did with Genius Sonority being punished at least partially from EN journal reviewers tastes (which even we don't trust) to the point they're only relegated to puzzle games now. It's why I sort of see GF having to play catch up as punishment for the TPC choosing to blame sonority for the Colosseum games being a flop and am pretty impressed they're catching up as is. Even more so now they're asking help. Maybe one day they could bite their pride and maybe get the company they've made specifically to create 3d games to help again ome day.
Colo and XD were a treat and to me now are what a game focused on the villains are like. Sometimes I think people forget these days villains in the mainline games are more nuisances to your overall goal, that being the badges, than the real threat. So a lot of complaints come from not understanding that. Would be a fun change of pace to have this kinda story beat in a mainline game more often.

I absolutely loved these games as a kid. I still have a couple of VHS tapes of me playing Pokemon Colosseum, because I loved the cutscenes so much that I wanted to watch them again and again. So many cutscenes had this feeling of excitement to them, like the ones you mentioned, or even the lack of music in the Nascour fight which gave this element of unease like something wasn't quite right, or anytime Miror B returned in XD, as it was always hard to know when he was going to show up. I got really obsessed with the mystery of it, the world of Orre, reading through the player's guide to XD, coming up with my own ideas for a sequel, etc. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of story in Battle Revolution, and it didn't do much for me sadly.
I have had a hard time getting into Pokemon after Gen 4, just because I kinda lost interest. If they ever did a kind of game like this again, I'd be immediately on board. Legends Arceus seemed somewhat interesting to me, but I never got to playing it, since the game's criticisms made it not sound like something I'd enjoy.

People are harsh on Legends: Arceus but I personally think it's a good game that very much deviates from the formula of the main games. Catching Pokémon is extremely fun and satisfying, and I love how detailed the animations are for the main characters. The boy and the girl both have different expressions and different ways of speaking that made me replay the game all over again to see them both. The character customization is fun and it puts a spin on my favorite generation that really dulls the pain of BDSP for me.
Playing "spot the ancestor" was fun too. Good guys became bad guys, bad guys become your favorites. The Pokémon can be taken out of their balls whenever you want and you can watch them react to each other and the world around them, like lying down in front of a campfire or wild Blissey helping you if you're hurt.

Gamefreak prioritized the battle effects over Pokemon animation itself. For the first 5 gens, the battle effects did the brunt of the work because pokemon sprites didn't need to have crazy reaction or idle animation, just poses or small movements in the case of gen 5. That's on top of everything in the game. With the GC games, since the games were fairly short with little to no post game or side content, they could prioritize making the pokemon themselves look and move better. If Gamefreak were to be given like 5 years of dev time per game, we could get that level of detail for every mon but that's not the reality. Look at Legends Arceus, the much smaller dex and less features meant the pokemon themselves had way more animations themselves.

Its completely understandable to appeal to a younger audience in order to maintain a concurrent fanbase as time goes on. Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

I'd love a remake of Colosseum were both Wes' and Rui's stories are expanded upon: Wes' in relation to Snagem Team and why he was working with them before leaving (and why he left, stealing the snag machine with him) and Rui's on her ability to see the aura of shadow Pokémon and were it comes from, expanding some lore with it, and the way she ends up coming with us, in short, more dialoge and more story relevance for her, hahah.
More lore would be good as well, Cypher in itself is perfect the way it is, but the region needs some lore of its own, maybe some legendary regional pokemon, or utilizing Celebi more, it seems like in Agate village something is going on.
And of course, the updated mechanics for shadow pokemon from XD should be implemented on Colosseum.
Also, I want to ride that awesome motorcycle 😂😂

To combat this, past-Celebi approaches the protagonist, and time travel shenanigans ensue where the protagonist and good Celebi try to outfox Cypher and shadow Celebi to restore the timeline and all that good stuff.

I agree on everything you said! I played Colloseum and XD when they came out and loved them so much, they gave pokemon that weird/dark/scary vibe with a one of a kind story. The animations were ground breaking and starting off with pokemon that aren't startes that you choose was a breath of fresh air (plus umbreon and espeon are my 2 fav eeveelutions). I have been hoping for something similar and onestly Arceus gave me more similar vibes, and now going back to the normal games like S&V doesn't excite me as much. So much of the pokemon community are older people in there 20-30s and we deserve a weird different type of pokemon game with XD and Colosseum. I wish they would do a remake of them for switch, with better grafics and less battles, but I have lost hope in it. Now I'm gonna need to find a gamecube and play them again because I miss them. Man, if we ever get remastered versions of Colo/XD on the Switch, that's like a dream come true. They don't even need to add anything quality of life, just few updates and smoothing on the wanky models/textures and an updated transferring system that lets you one-way transfer them over to Home. I'd pay for full price for that. I'd still pay good money for a non remaster, but I think not doing a remaster of them would be such a wasted opportunity, and the effort they need to put in is little comparatively to the money grab opportunity it holds.

    I am incredibly spoiled.
As a kid at the turn of the century, the GameCube was still hot off the presses. Mom grew up with the OG Nintendo's but Dad was still a grumpy old man.
Growing up I watched the older Saturday morning cartoons on Boomerang. The original Pokémon anime happened to feature on the channel and I loved watching it with the family.
I loved Pokémon so much that my mom would buy me those little Pokémon figures which I subsequently used to act out a multi-layer Pokémon story at the age of 5. It was around this time that Pokémon XD came out.
Mom and Dad exchanged verbal blows, with Dad coming up short on reasons why I couldn't have a Video Game based on my favorite tv show. One sunny day in April of 2006 Mom went to the local K-Mart and brought home a purple GameCube and a copy of what would be my first Pokémon game: Gale of Darkness.
I played that game so much that I to this day remember wasting hours of my life trying to figure out how in the heck to purify shadow Lugia.
Great first exposure, but because of it I find it hard to enjoy the newer titles.

My first few times playing I didn't know how to purify pokemon with the machine so I rarely purified them and kept a very basic team.

    1. GBA cable support need to upgrade to pokemon home support.

In the beginning of coloseum after battling the first 2 battles in the game with your espeon and umbreon, you will encounter a human trapped in a bag and being carried the the very "syndicate" you betray in the beginning. These games are part of my teen years and they shaped my perseption of what a Pokémon RPG can be. Going back to them as is would be a challenge, as the Gen 3 meta is so outdated that currently good Pokémon will go back and be bad again. And a lot has changed in 6 generations.
Sad to read among the comments that many of the founding members of Genius Sonority are no longer working, but some Pokémon insiders are gond of the games.
With the Switch in its final years, a remaster of Colosseum and XD would be a fitting test of power for the next Nintendo console.
What the games should have are the following:
The latest meta on day of release.
Additional content to expand both games.
Redesigns for the human cast that maintain the essence of their original designs but modernize them to current aesthetics. And new organic animations.
    Fully rearranged soundtrack.
New cinematic segments and voice acting.
If a mainline gimmick is to be implemented, it's Mega Evolution. Take the chance to give new Mega Evolutions to Pokémon that have been long requested.
    Orre regional forms and evolutions.
I think that's about it. Any other good change and added features are welcome.
Sidenote: a remastered Pokémon Conquest would be great, alongside two other versions: Birthright and Revelations. (Eh, bad FE: Fates joke, but good ideas nonetheless, with new Pokémon to be added.)

Really great video! Loved hearing the memories you had playing Colosseum and XD as a kid. These games are my childhood. Same with Pokémon channel and mystery dungeon. Still play them today after 15+ years.
It’s really the coolness factor of XD and Colosseum that make them great.
It’s also the world maps that are well detailed with unique buildings and paths. Because of all the detail they put into areas, as a kid I would always speculate if there were areas I would have to unlock or if there were hidden Pokémon / Shadow Pokémon I couldn’t get to. Here’s some of my childhood memories/speculations I had as a kid playing both Colosseum and XD.
Agate Forest I always theorized if there was a rare Pokémon where the stone was. Then later find out as an adult that you could get Celebi there in the Japanese version. Was definitely before I had access to internet, just friends to rely on for information. I could have gotten guidebooks but with the money I had as a kid I’d rather buy a new game. Seeing bosses have legendary dogs as a kid blew my mind cause at the time I never had access to gold and silver till later in my life. This was my first time fighting them and on top of it being able to catch them and use them on my team was so cool! I also loved opening those Pokémon treasure chest with the little Jingle. Super nostalgic. Then trying to catch all 6 Shadow Pokémon from Greevil at the end of XD took me so long as a kid. Lot of that was luck based spamming Ultraballs. I later did a run catching them all in Pokeballs. That was a pain. Was sad to find out later as an adult that you can fight him again to catch those Shadow Pokémon. Also found out you could get Dragonite as a Shadow Pokémon on top of the lighthouse if you fight Miror B. I always knew there was something you could do with him but since I had accidentally killed his Nosepass, not knowing you could rematch him to catch it, I couldn’t fight him even having all my other Pokémon purified. I would always get the Miror B notifications but never knew where to meet him, so when it would pop up I would always run around every area on the map to look for him. I would alway got to the top of the lighthouse and click on everything thinking I needed to engage with something. So when I finally found out how to do it when I was older, it was a good feeling.
So many good memories from these games. They for sure aren’t perfect with the long tedious battles and grindy gameplay, but they are some of my favorite games to date.

These really bad shortcuts are not excusable. Imagine a first party Sony/Microsoft studio release a game today with early PS2/Xbox details and quality

I think the problem isn't so much that gamefreak isn't capable of being on par with first party studios, so much that it is the pokemon company's fault that gamefreak can't live up to that potential. GameFreak only makes up a small portion of the pokemon company. The amount of influence they have is constantly endanger of being seen as replaceable, since the merchandising and anime divisions work on a pretty tight deadlines. A single delay of a pokemon game causes delays in the merchandise and anime divisions as well. Most of pokemon's profits comes not from the games but from the merchandising. When it comes to the pokemon company's point of view, the anime and games are really just there to advertise the merch . All of this pressure, its kind of understanding that there is a drop in quality since x and y.

@@BladeMasterIcarus The problem with that is they're fantastic for pixel art, and then modern gaming forced them into 3D modeling, which wasn't their expertise and is harder to implement long term with 1000 pokemon. If they kept the mainline games as enhanced pixel art, and had bigger Arceus/Colosseum like games on the side less often for the 3D, then they could've handled it much easier. They were going to always be forced into the tight schedule line and they don't get the freedom to just forever expand the dev team.
