Well done for passing your knowledge onto the school...when they reach out to you, you know then that a lot of people both admire and appreciate your skills and knowledge.
It is obvious to me that Robin is motivated by the love of his craft. Those doors will let anyone who visits the domain know what the king and his castle r all about. Setting up the jigs with those tiny shims might seem over the top, but R likes to do things within a gnat’s rear end of tolerance. The interaction with the school was really cool. Just like the hammer, R always has his little plane handy for the touch up. A workman is worthy of his hire, and the domain ain’t cheap. Without trespassing to much on the privacy, it would b nice to have a little tour of the present state of the home project. Thank u!!
Hi Robin. I am currently transitioning from a job in engineering to working as a carpenter and joiner, your channel and your work on skill builder has really inspired me to make the leap. Enjoy your vids very much. Cheers.
To set an accurate depth on a router. I set the router bit to touch the work piece. Then on the depth set up I ignore the scale and use a drill shank. I have a set or drills from 2.5 up to 13.5mm in 0.5mm increments so its spot on. You can make up accurate spacers for deeper cuts too.
NICE job I have just fitted some oak finished doors like your walnut ones what a worry of scratching them They looked good when finished thank goodness but very stressful fitting them.
Looking to use these for a set of insulated barn doors for a new garage. - would they work for an exterior door without problems or should I look for a stainless model?
What size bushing guide did you use with the 24mm bit to get the proper size mortise with the jig? I’m using the same hinges and jig but don’t have the right one (I’m in America and all mine are imperial) so will have to order something. Thanks for the great video!
By far the best Tectus installation video I've come across. Would be good to know which collet extension you're using, and which 24mm bit. I've found the hard way that the CMT extension is larger at the collet than the 30mm guide bush, so it impedes the plunge. I've had to source a 1/4" shank extension and a 1/4" 24mm bit so it would work, and all that is on the way. Will have to take more passes than would be needed with a 1/2" shank.
Been watching every episode getting excited to see the one where the doors get hung and you done it without filming it 🙈 they look such a focus point door. Standard is the best. Maybe have a clip of them from the outside hung and you opening them? Keep the videos coming please
Hi Robin. I have some CEAM hidden hinges that look as if they are set centre to the door, not 4mm from the inside. It’s a standard thickness door (45mm). So, as a standard thickness door I’m assuming that setting these hinges at 22mm is ok?
Thicker jamb the better, its more about the screws having enough to bite into, the actual body of the hinge can mortice through the frame if needs be but the screws will need extra solid grounds behind the frame if that was the case, also it would depend on how heavy the doors where etc
@@ukconstruction thank you! I think then I can use longer screws so that they go through the 3/4" jamb, the shims all the way into the trimmer stud. Door weight is probably 80-100 pounds.
Was it harder mark out and jig the cutouts on the frame ? Any tips to get positions close to perfect ? Looks like it not the ideal doors for a first door hanging experience lol . Surprised airbags didn't burst :-)
Nice work Clevett. It's gonna make a great sound when you use them. Them there screws look a bit on the short side to catch the core. Do you find that the screws that companys supply with stuff are usually made from cheese.
Thanks for the comment, I always start with the supplied screws!! In the case of these hinges so much of the load is taken through the mortice you form when they are installed, in the frame I used my own longer screws and these where 50mm as opposed to the ones supplied, my plan is that I will monitor the doors and if I see any movement of the hinge then I will replace with some longer ones, I do agree about screw supplied with some ironmongery, sometimes they are just wrong or in the case of ploished chrome the type you get with some handles and hinges they are as soft as butter!! I often use all my own screws in place of supplied!!!
Hi Robin, nice job mate. My only concern would be the potential for a 100kg door to slam shut in a gust of wind and either take someones fingers off or shake the frame to bits. It's bad enough with a heavy fire door. Does the hinge have any sort of built in friction to stop them slamming ?
Hi Nick, there is no built in closing/friction device for TECTUS but the hinges can be used with concealed overhead door closers to maintain the 'concealed door' effect
I can't recommend any particular brand, I got a cheap set from Amazon that seem fairly good. But they're sometimes referred to as Vix bits, maybe this will give more search results?
I,v used various makes and found the ones from Axminster tools the best. Don’t clog up,there seems to be more clearance in them. That’s what I find anyway.
Hi Kevin, I didn't even consider using the souber, in the case of smaller Simonswerk hinges then maybe, especially if the fore end is no more than 25mm, the hinges I used are around 36mm wide so that maybe to much for the souber? you have me thinking now!!!!
Your right there, Souber cutters only go up to 32mm, it would only help you cut out the main body of the hinges. Unless you did it with two passes with a smaller cutter with the off centre jig for the plate. Before Dropping the hinge in and tracing the plate and manually routing out the bottom and top radius. Pretty much the same about of effort of what you are doing already . If only those hinges was slightly smaller, I do really like them.
I always get worried putting screws in like that, that they might snap the head off 😰 is that ever a worry for you or are you so experienced it just doesn't happen?
It's a real problem with some screws, I always use a decent pilot to the correct depth and test the fixings on a piece of scrap first, great comment, all the best Robin
SOS hinges have been around forever and really are just concealed hinges and come in different sizes and you do not need all that kit to install them I do like your work though
Hi Robin, I am sure we all wanted to see the door swing! Mike
HI Mike, I will do a short video on the operation of the doors and hinges, thanks for spurring me on and all the others who have likes this comment!!!
So nice of you to pass on your knowledge not just here, but to carpentry apprentices in the USA. Kudos, Robin!
Well done for passing your knowledge onto the school...when they reach out to you, you know then that a lot of people both admire and appreciate your skills and knowledge.
I’d love to see a video of the adjustment on the hinges and to see the doors swinging. Top work as always!
Hi Kris, we have a video on youtube demonstrating the adjustment, please click here ua-cam.com/video/gkcu_reUlLU/v-deo.html

Hi Bill, I will do a tour at some point!! have a great day and thanks mate lovely comment!!!

I thought u were actually transitioning . . .

Good tip that
Top man spending time with students of any trade is great for them 👍👍👍🇬🇧👷♂️
Great! Would like a follow up vid of the adjustability of the hinges please.
Hi Russell, we have a video on youtube demonstrating the adjustment, please click here ua-cam.com/video/gkcu_reUlLU/v-deo.html
That really is exceptional. Thought these skills had been lost years ago .
Thank you for the shout out, Robin! Big fans of your work.
Used this hinges before very nice. Yes bit of a pain to set up. I done my first cut out on a old door to make sure the setting was spot on
Those doors are magnificent Robin 👏👏
Thank you Peter
NICE job I have just fitted some oak finished doors like your walnut ones what a worry of scratching them They looked good when finished thank goodness but very stressful fitting them.
Fantastic video, thank you for reviewing our TECTUS hinges.

Cracking job Robin, always great to watch your work 👌👍

Hi Danny, I will do that mate and maybe talk about the hinges and locks etc
Did you mark any of the 'Nicely polished' Brass plates 👀?
That is a seriously engineered hinge! Great doors 👍

Do you have a video of using the jig on the frame?
Do They Make a double acting hinge in this style?
I say this every video, but you're a class act Robin 👍
Absolutely superb
Great short videos Robin, perfect for learning..whens the metal brush strips and draught excluder getn fitted.. 🤠
Hi Stephen, already covered!! I have gaskets routed into the door frame and on the centre rebate, great observation mate
fabulous job Robin
Stunning work Robin 👍🏻
Love them doors, cracking work as usual 👌
Great looking doors and hinges! I know they can handle the weight but were you tempted to do the old adage "a pair and half" for the hinge count?
Beautiful engineering in the hinges 👌🏼
Can these hinges be fit into a standard 3/4” jamb with the trimmer stud behind the jamb mortised? Or should they be installed in a 1.5” jamb?
Thicker jamb the better, its more about the screws having enough to bite into, the actual body of the hinge can mortice through the frame if needs be but the screws will need extra solid grounds behind the frame if that was the case, also it would depend on how heavy the doors where etc

great video again ,but, can you show the hinge adjustment + the door when finished ?

Beautiful doors Robin. They must have cost you a fortune. But i'm sure there worth every penny.

Came out gorgeous
Where do you get your self centring drill bits from?? I can only find cheap amtek type ones and they really aren’t as good as yours seem to be!

Hi Sam here is a link

Hey robin, how come you’ve switched to the m12 impact and not using the hikoki anymore? Just curious
Hiya Robin
Great Video
I thought that the screws supplied were a little short to be honest ?
Which air bags did you use mate they look a bit more heavy duty than my winbags
I have some that I got from LIDL!!!!! they where £8 for a pair, my others are by Wurth
What about the deck Robin anymore updates. Stephen
Good video bro keep up the good work
Great vid Robin! Appreciated. Cheers,
Robert you the man 😀😀
I’d be shaking like a leaf 🍁!
Hi Robin, could you route out those hinges with the sober jig with the correct size cutters?

I have a link to Simonswerk in my description if that helps

Hi Robin what we all want to know is are you team Ferrari on LBC or James O’Brien
Definitely Ferrari 👍
Well I am Nick Ferrari!!
