I never thought a usb cable could make a difference to the sound quality, then a bought a upgrade usb cable & I was shocked on the improvement it made, over a cheep one. You put a lot of effort into making these cables videos, your a great bloke thanks.

Really nicely done. USB cables are among the fiddliest to make but it's well worth getting those solid conductors and screen for a low loss cable. As you say, it makes a difference for the sound.

Another brilliant video, my friend! I would have never thought of leaving the DeoxIt on the conductors as a lubricant to ease while pushing them through the PTFE tubing. I also like how you attached the aluminum foil tape while laying flat rather than wrapping it. This process provides a much tidier cable. Your many years of experience are clearly visible! I appreciate you sharing some of your knowledge, and I find your videos very educational!

I am going to build a USB cable using the fundamentals as shown in this great video. But I want to isolate the 5v from the signal source by utilizing a separate LPS . Apparently the 5v from the upstream source -in my case a laptop , is very dirty and manifests itself as audible noise in the analogue signal. Love this Tweaker man

well done but... to improve it just use the two cores for + and - in parallel and connect them only to minus pole at both ends... do all the shielding etc and then use and EXTERNAL conductor for the +V, keep the +V line outside the shielding and do not connect the +V line unless not necessary (not all the dac require +V at the usb input to operate)... usb power from pc over usb is a HUGE source of noises

Have you seen the helix diy cables? You have the copper ground or silver if you want wrapped around the outside! You'd need 9' of ground for a 3' cable.

You will need to use a ptfe tube for the the 5v wire on a usb cable, as cotton can't take electrical current, thanks mate.

@@tweakerman ahhh, good to know. Thanks man! But isn't audio current as well? Or do you mean 5V is too much current ?
Because man, since the cotton I haven't looked back. I probably go for pure silver as well on the master outputs of my dac.

Cotton is fine insulator for interconnect wires, but not for speaker cable, powercords & usb cables, it should be Teflon, cotton could catch fire👍

Dear Tweaker Man where do you buy silver wire in bulk ? It´s stupid expensive, like US$ 15 per foot or around 30cm in Partsconnexion. Just discovered you channel and loving it.

great video. However, I suspect that separate shielding of 2 data cables and 2 power cables would be better. And why is the cable only 0.6mm thick? I would take a little more - for a data at least 0.8 and for power wires you can definitely have more - there is a large current (up to 1.5A). Maybe 0.6mm is enough, but the extra thickness definitely won't hurt. Actually I'm not sure that expensive silver cables are needed for power cables. A direct current flows through them and here it would be possible to get by with just a good thick copper conductor. Silver is needed for high frequency, which is just in data cables

Hi tweakerman, thanks for the video! I use an IFI iDSD Micro DAC which needs a USB A socket instead of a USB B plug. Any idea where I can find those in decent quality? Like a female USB A. There is an adapter that came with the IfI but it's not good quality and would make it pointless to DIY a nice cable when used between the cable itself and the Dac. Any ideas on that? Thanks!

Shielding the conductors individually changes their electrical properties. Generally, it increases the inductance and capacitance. Cable design is about balancing the positives and negatives, which ultimately comes down to real world usage.
