The standout feature of this functional and beautiful wooden model table clock is the rotating tourbillon that sits on top. In wrist and pocket watches a tourbillon mechanism helps increase accuracy by counteracting the effects of gravity when the watch is stationary. By seating the escape and balance wheel within a rotating cage, slight errors in timekeeping introduced by the force of gravity are averaged out. In table clocks and wall-mounted clocks a tourbillon often serves a more decorative purpose. This is true of the Sky Watcher Tourbillon Table Clock from Ugears, where the sphere of the tourbillon has been styled to resemble a large telescope observatory scanning the celestial sphere.
The Sky Watcher tourbillon mechanism has three axes of rotation: around the vertical axis of the clock, horizontal axis of the clock, and relative to the central axis of the inner sphere. The idea that you can build your own tourbillon out of composite wood, from a DIY model kit, without need of glue or special tools, is kind of amazing, but amazement is what our Ugears customers have come to expect.
Rather than an all-too-common clock face with hands, we have created additional interest by having the time display placed on reels. The minute reel rotates smoothly with the progress of the tourbillon, while the hour reel marks the passage of time with a percussive mechanism.
The wind-up clock operates based on the accumulation of potential energy in a flat spring, and the metered release of this energy. When the model is fully wound it can power the timepiece for approximately 2-3 hours, sufficient for long observation of the mesmerizing mechanism, or to provide a pleasant background ticking clock sound and visual diversion for a period of work or rest.

It‘s 2:30 AM and I just finished the Tower. Loading the Spring was scary but the video scanned with the QR code really helped me.
Tomorrow I will assemble the Tourbillon but I need to buy sandpaper first. I have sanded every cog and every piece just a bit, so it’s a bit smoother to touch and the cogs can run better.
I really can’t wait until it’s finished, I haven’t been this exited since I was a kid.
I looove mechanical clocks and this one seems to be right up my alley! Definitely gonna try to get my hands on it for Christmas

Thank you for finally giving us a proper metal spring instead of rubber bands. I'd even pay more if you offered this kit with a larger spring so it'd run for a day or two instead of just 3 hours. Give me metal axles and bearings too, also willing to pay more for that.

This is an ingenious design, and very well executed! I did have to take the tourbillon apart and clean some things up before it would run reliable, but it is running well now. My only problem now is the hour wheel doesn't rotate by one hour, but sometimes by two hours!

Hi, try grinding parts #5 so they slide easily in parts #8 and 9.
Please check that parts #18 and 12 are installed correctly (page #6, step 4).

Hi how did you get it to run I have been having issues trying to get the ball to spin once I install it and wind it up the ball won't turn
There is a lever that drags on a large cam on the inside part of the hour wheel. I had to file down the cam at the point where it had to much drag from the lever. It was smooth after that.
It’s definitely a very awesome looking clock and I’m sure if built correctly it will function perfectly. However, the problem I have is that it will only run for 2 to 3 hours at best. What’s the point of winding the clock up, setting the time then letting it run for those couple of hours. So it seems that only when you want to “play” with it you wind it and watch it for a little bit.
At least your Aero wall clock can go around 12 hours, which is what I am thinking of buying. I love this one, but at $80 to $90 for a 2-3 hour run time is too expensive.

Some use the Sky Watcher table clock to set exam time for their students, and others - share their excitement about mechanics with their friends.

Any assembly videos for this yet. The part at the end about setting the mechanism for 10 min is confusing. I can’t figure out what I’m supposed to be doing.

Please, check that there are no burrs between the teeth of the gears.
Wax all gears with paraffin, especially anchor gears #124 and 125.
Check attention marks of parts #127 and 130 (page #42).
You need to develop the sphere for at least 10 min (pages #55 and 56).
Also, check that all the parts of the tourbillon are pressed tightly together.
Develop each part of the model manually.

I am having trouble reseating the Tourbillon. It doesn't want to turn in the direction the instructions specify. I'm not sure what I'm missing. Is there a video showing how to do this?

I cannot express just how terrible this model is. It's missing the fundamental basics of a watch escapement, like the safety roller and the banking pins, which is why the pallet frequently falls out of place and the escapement stops. The jump hour also just doesn't work at all, as the little lever on step 3 of page 5 is too long to drop down to the tooth below. Even after filing this lever down, the jump hour works slightly better but gets stuck between the hours.

Hi, please check the assembly of part #130 and the anchor wheel.
Recheck assembly stages on pages #49, 52, and 54, and if you correctly installed metal washers in the tourbillon.
Try aligning gear #171 (page #61) so that it runs squarely in the center of the holes in part #105.
Carefully sand down parts #127 and 147. Then, parts will move more freely.
Remove excess paraffin from mechanisms, as it can slow down mechanisms.
