After losing their opening game away to Boston United, Graham Rix's U's got themselves off the mark for the season with a 1-0 home win over last season's play-off finalists Mansfield. Birthday boy Tommy Mooney, on his home debut, bagged the only goal of the game, but there was further incident as referee Trevor Parked was kept busy. He sent off Oxford's Leo Roget for a clumsy foul on Derek Asamoah and then evened things up late on with a second yellow card for Mansfield's Lee Williamson.
