I usually write on a zip loc bag with a Sharpie. That way when I am packing for my return trip home I am less likely to forget an item. It's also great to be able to tell the difference between Lysol cleaning wipes and wipes intended for use on the skin. Thank you Laurie for your wonderful videos!
The plastic bags that sheets come in also work for clothing instead of a packing cube. The snack sized ziplocs can sometimes be found at Dollar Tree and I find that they are super handy to have around when I travel. Thanks, Laurie!
I bring an empty smaller ziploc on the plane with me for all my used wipes, tissues, and other garbage. Flight attendants really appreciate the germ-free, neatly packaged mess! A gallon sized ziploc and a package of laundry soap sheets makes it very easy to quickly wash out the day's tops, socks and unmentionables in the hotel sink every night, thus requiring less clothing to be packed. A ziploc sandwich bag in my purse at all times means I can dispose of the various wipes I use throughout the day, even if I'm not near a garbage can.
We lost our little buddy two years ago and still have several rolls of doggie bags on a roll. I keep one in each vehicle and in my personal bag in a small pouch with a hole in it. Before being gifted the pouch I used to place them in a snack size baggie with the tail coming out of an unsealed corner. My current set is bright orange so I do get a few stares, but it's so easy to hand to the FA when they come down the aisle. I am going to steal your idea of carrying a baggie in my purse though, that's so thoughtful of you to not litter.
For those still using Tictacs, old Tictac containers are great for containing OTC medications and/or pill/capsule supplements. Tictac containers also make good containers for a homemade sewing kit of pre-threaded needles, extra thread wound on a piece of cardboard, and a number of safety pins. Match thread color to the color of your packed clothes.
I carry a quart size baggie with a moisture absorber (those little packets that come with packaged items, “dessicants”?). If my phone gets wet, put it in the baggie and the packet will absorb the moisture.
I bought disposable shoe covers in the painting supply area (12 pair pack) at the Dollar Tree to cover the bottom of my shoes before I pack them. They work great and I can squeeze my shoes in any wear without getting my clothes dirty
I use sandwich size, quart & gallon size & the 2 gallon size. I always pack extra in the front pocket of my suitcase for last minute wet items from the shower or wet bathing suits from the last dip before leaving for the airport. Plus, you never know what is going to split open in your suitcase with lotion or sunscreen. They are the best!!! I use Freezer style bags & reuse them until I cannot reuse them anymore.
Always fun to watch your videos, and daydream of one day traveling again! Also, you are such a nice positive person, a great break from watching too many news videos. I agree with all of your tips except as a replacement for packing cubes. When we were much younger, my husband and I traveled to Europe with large backpack style carry-on's which I packed using zip-top bags. The bags would slide all over, and end up in a pile at the bottom. Packing cubes have more structure and don't slide around as easily. Nice to see the pup!
Gosh - my only hack is to have a baggie full of assorted other size baggies in the outside of my luggage. Gallon size for wet or super-dirty clothes, quarts for pretty much everything else, but I also have assorted other sizes too. I travel with a buddy that makes her own "vitamin kits" using small 3" baggies and then as we travel she regains that "space" the longer we travel. My baggy of baggies also has a sharpie for baggie marking.
A couple of tips for moms with young children: I used to pack my kids' clothes by sets in each of the Ziploc bags when we travel. It was easy and lightweight to pack and easy to grab and change if they have an accident and need to change quickly. I also used to make sets of "activity/goody" bags. I would pick up a variety of wind-up toys, tiny stuffed animals, small activity books such as puzzles, coloring pages, etc along with a small pack of crayons/coloring pencils/markers, and treats. Once we had to change 5 planes to get to our destination so I would hand one out on each of the new flights. This is one of the best entertainments on the roads or planes. I have to say, I don't like using Ziploc bags for toiletries. They are way too flimsy and often leaks or accidentally got punctured. All the other suggestions you made, I actually do use as well, with the exception of the board games. THAT, I am going to adapt. Thank you!!
You’re absolutely right, baggies are wonderful to keep you organized. When my kids were infants I used plastic bags to keep my baby gear inside of my diaper bag sanitary from my high-touch items such as phone, loose change, wallet and keys. A set of diapers, wipes, pacifiers, burp clothes and nursing cover, burp cloths and a change of clothes each had their own gallon-sized ziplock bag.
Laurie I love your videos. Use zip lock bags of different sizes when traveling: hundreds of uses. Going on a month long road trip in a few weeks and hope to travel abroad next year (fingers crossed!).
Hi Laurie, new subscriber and really enjoy your UA-cam videos. Getting quite a few helpful tips for when we travel. I also really enjoy your great Georgia "accent ". Keep up the great travel hacks and other information. I'm learning a lot to make the most of our carry-ons and personal bag. Much needed since my husband won't check bags.
I always travel the baggie even use the left over food if needed thanks for this love your channel keep the videos coming I get and learn a lot from them
We’ve used baggies for years. It’s great for the last day of vacation to throw your wet swimsuit into before packing. I also use the vacuum bags for all our dirty clothes. So much easier and less smelly for the trip home. Thanks for more great tips!!!
Hey Laurie, I have been loving your videos. My husband and I are finally getting to our trip to Lake Tahoe in a couple of weeks. It’s been rescheduled three times already this year! Because it is starting to get cooler in Tahoe in the evening, I’m having to bring lots of layering pieces. I find shoulder seasons the hardest to pack for since the weather is a bit unpredictable, but it does help keep down the cost of the trip so we take a lot of those types of holidays. Baggies and the space bags that don’t need a vacuum are my lifesaver! Now if I could figure out a way to being 4 pair of shoes. I need walking shoes (will wear on the plane) 2 pairs of booties and a pair of sandals for dinner and more dressy outfits. I’m hoping my husband will let me sneak a pair or two into his carry on. 😂
Jan Eyres Seriously! Shoes make it so hard to pack!! I agree with you. So excited for tour beautiful trip! If you can find a North Face type jacket that may help cut down on more layers. Have fun!
For travel, layering or just wet days, I swear by my LL Bean trail model rain jacket. It is lightweight and stuffs into its own pocket, small enough to carry in a fanny pack, but blocks wind quite well, so can work into even late fall with a layer or two underneath.
I found the sturdier, reusable ziplock bags at Costco recently for $6-7. Three different sizes. I always pack an assortment of regular ziplock bags (inside a 2-gallon one), including very small “pill pack” size, along with rubber bands and 2-3 clothespins when I travel. Good suggestions, as always. Hopefully, we’ll all be traveling again soon! Stay safe, everyone!
Schmooshing rocks! Great tips. I agree about the carry-on size Ziploc bags - they're impractical in that they're hard to maneuver clothes into. I spent a lot of time even trying to find them (Container Store had them), and it turns out I totally disliked them. The suitcase size for use in carry-on is great because the end flaps fold over and make them easy to fit-to-size! I use them to schmoosh our worn clothes into without worrying about folding and all. Once in there, I sit on the bag (don't laugh) to compress. One thing I found the plastic bags so useful for was when we cruised around Hawaii this past Fall. I stashed some rolls, etc. into them and brought them back to our cabin so we had something to nibble on the next morning before heading out on early excursions. We bypassed breakfast in the dining area that way but didn't leave the ship hungry. Thanks for all of your tips - I love your videos. Be well.
We've used normal ziplocs for cheese at home for as long as I can remember (so, of course, we use them whenever we travel, too), and unless we take the cheese out of the wrapper, the bag stays clean - because of that, I've never understood the reasoning behind using plastic wrap, because 1) it can be hard to get a good seal, and 2) you have to secure it somehow, and the rubber band leaves a dent (sometimes a big one) in the cheese. We would use the fold-top bags for lunch and secure them with twist ties (otherwise they can make a mess, depending on what's in them), but my mom didn't save those ones - we save, wash, and reuse normal ziplocs only as long as they're not greasy and don't have any holes. I've never used the vacuum ziploc bags, but when using any bags, we always roll our clothes, and they fit into whatever bag we're putting them in.
I have migraines and use a doubled ziplock bags for an ice pack. Use a smaller bag to pack the ice tighter . Add a dish towel and instant ice pack! Most restaurants will give you ice if you explain it's for an pack.
I love watching all your videos. I grew up traveling, but I still almost always learn at least one new idea from your videos. Thank you for doing these!
Packing delicate thin necklaces; slip one end into a shortened plastic straw then close up...prevents tangling. I remove my medicine labels from the pill bottles, stick them on portion control snack bags i buy at target, then put my pills/vutamins inside. Love all your videos!!!
where's the link to your video for the new carry on rules? I'm flying out of the country on September 2nd, and am panicking about what I can and can't put in my carry on as I'll have a checked bag, a carry on and a personal bag...please give me the link so I can repeatedly binge watch it before I fly out (brain injury info won't stick that long) will have to watch it a few times before it finally sticks...you are so pretty, and look forwards to your videos.....
IAMdevilwomen Hi!!! Don’t panic haha. It is in the description box and in the I cards. If you’re on your phone click the upside down triangle. Thanks for watching!
IKEA sells some unique sizes zip top baggies. Each box has two different sizes. I like the small square ones and the big ones will actually fit stinky shoes!
Laurie, I would rather see my own pouches than use the baggies as it is less waste for the landfill. It doesn’t take much time, money, or supplies. In fact, you can repurpose old shirts, jeans, sheets, or whatever other items you may have that are a little past their prime. You might even have zippers laying around from jeans or dresses what have you or even scraps. You can even use sewable vinyl (forgive the spelling, please if it’s wrong) so you can see what is inside. The bags can be made whatever size you want them to be, for whatever use you want. They are squashable to fit in any nook or cranny and so easy to make. From cutting the fabric to completion shouldn’t take much more than about 15-20 minutes unless you are using scraps to make your fabric. I have a fabric stash. Make sure your fabric has been washed, dried, and ironed. Depending on whether you want the front the same as the back or not will determine this next step. Take 1 piece of fabric folded in half right sides together or 2 pieces of fabric placed right sides together and cut to desired measurements say 4” x 6”. In the case of the folded fabric you would not cut the fold. That piece would measure 8” x 6”, not to worry by the time we are finished this bag will be within a half inch in depth of the other one. Step 2) Take your vinyl zipper making sure it is longer than 8” or longer (we will cut off the excess), 10 or 12 inches is even better, place it right side facing down on the right side of one piece of your fabric along 1of the 6” with the zipper overhanging each end by at least an inch, pin in place. Using the zipper foot of your machine stitch as close about 1/8” away from the zipper teeth moving the zipper pull out of the way as needed. Press. Fold edge of fabric with zipper over towards wrong side and press, now right sides of both zipper and fabric should be facing up. At this point you can either repeat step 2 instructions with the other piece of fabric or edge of fabric if you are just using the one piece or Topstitch the first half of the zipper about 1/8” away from the edge and then Topstitch the second half. Make sure your zipper is open at least halfway. Btw, you will have a tube at this point if you are just using the one piece of fabric. I forgot to mention at the beginning of the instructions that you will also need 2 pieces about 2” x 3” in size. This is where they come in. Fold the 2 3” sides in towards the middle on each piece so that they now measure 1” wide x 3” long fold in each 1” end by 1/4” and fold the resulting 2 1/2” long piece in half so it measures approximately 1 1/4” long. Set aside. Going back to the bag sew the 2 or 3 open edges closed ignoring the zipper side. Press your bag. Now you have a decision to make, do you want your bag to sit flat on the bottom when you have it open or are you okay with the way it is now? If you want it to sit flat when open, we have to make a couple of boxy corners. If you are fine with the bag as is, skip this step.It sounds more difficult than it is. Take the bottom of your bag and at one corner line up the side seam over top of the bottom seam (seams nesting or going in opposite directions) or on top of the fold. On the size of bag in our example, I wouldn’t come down any more than about an inch or maybe 2 depending on what you want to use it for. Draw a line straight across, pin, flip end and repeat. Those are our sewing lines. Press. Cut off the excess, leaving about 1/4” seam allowance. Now it is time to turn the bag right side out and we are on the home stretch. Turn the bag, cut the excess zipper at the open end leaving between 1/2 and 3/4” pinch it closed and take one of those little folded rectangles we set aside and slip it over the end. Making sure there are no metal stoppers left on the zip, stitch the zipper tab on securely and repeat with the other end. If you prefer to keep that end of the zipper longer go ahead, just make sure you cut the metal stopper off. Sorry, if these instructions sound difficult and confusing, but, it really isn’t difficult and you can set these up assembly line fashion. You will have them for years no matter what size you make them. The size in this example holds the charging cables and chargers for my cell, tablet Fitbit and e-reader nicely although I normally keep my e-reader cable with my e-reader in its own pouch. Ta for now.
I use the sandwich sized bag for my trash - for my little tissues, granola wrappers, and misc small things. It helps when waiting for the flight attendants to come buy with their trash bag.
You are my kind of girl I'm glad I'm not the only person with ocd on finding new uses for any kind of bags, especially the zip lock variety Loves watching your informative video's Keep it up 👍
Just returned from a trip to the States. At BWI (Baltimore) we were instructed to place EACH electronic into SEPARATE bins! We had 8 bins just for our electronics.
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing! It's so weird how not all locales are consistent. But they know stuff we do not so I just obey and keep traveling and smiling. Did they make you take out food? Some are not strict about the new rules. Thank you for watching!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Per your video on packing food - I took my gallon size ziplock out and put it in a bin. My husband would kill me if we were sent to the back of the line (LOL)
Hi Laurie it’s Amanda Quiñones I’m from the Bronx NYC I really enjoy watching you videos there’re great tips and the last video you did at the airport the bloopers at the end were so funny and your reaction when the announcements would come up and you and your family are so fun keep posting and I’ll keep watching thanks
I use my nice pouches, make-up bags, toiletry bags for road trips but when flying, I only use baggies. Custom officers like them too if they have to search a bag because they don't have to open a whole bunch of little bags, they just pull them out and look through. The $ stores also sell little tiny zipper baggies that are good for pills, earrings, floss sticks, etc. I do feel bad about the 'one-time use' plastic bags but airlines have so many restrictions now that we don't have much choices. I try to re-purpose them as much as possible so that they are used more than once.
Used to travel for a living, used Ziploc bags for travel domestically and internationally. Cheap, disposable (if you want), items are visible for quick locating and can roll up to eliminate almost all air as well as a space bag.
I like to pack my period essentials in a ziplock baggie, but since i became more environmentally aware i use the squishy pencil pouches. You can get them with many different compartments, so you can be organized and still smoosh and squish into the luggage. Plus they have many cute patterns, so nobody else have to know what is in them.
hi ya! my mom has been using baggies for years when we travel. (we grew up travelling, it was a budget secret as packing cubes weren't the big thing they are now) in fact just before the pandemic, we'd taken a family cruise & we both forgot to pack extra baggies. so in port one day, we hit up the local convenience store to buy a box of ziploc bags. :)
Ziplocks are so bad for the environment! Please look into reusable ziptop baggies! There are so many options. I like that you’re using pouches for some things. I do that too, not just for travel, but for purse organization!
I pack my undies in a baggie. That way if TSA needs to inspect by bag, they're not touching my drawers, the undies aren't all over the place and I can easily keep track of clean vs worn
I use plastic bags to individually pack small liquid containers that I’m reusing. For example, I reuse empty skincare bottles or jars (especially the sample size ones) and fill them with whatever product, and then put them in a small Ziploc in case they leak. I have a dedicated « travel basket » in my closet, where I keep those containers and plastic bags, and sample skincare items. I don’t wash those little plastic bags after each use unless a product leaked.
I always bring clean baggies on the airplane to collect my trash, especially the Clorox wipes used to clean my space. I do not expect the flight attendants to touch my used wipes and trash. That’s just yucky in the era of Covid travel.
Same here. It always amazes me how many people think flight attendants, wait staff, store clerks, etc. do not deserve consideration or politeness. Who wants to touch other people's dirty used stuff? Ick!
Great tips! Btw does your husband ever fly out from El Paso Texas because he looks familiar and I think I may have flown on his plane a couple of times? Just curious. TFS Hugs 💕
I have used the 2 gallon bags to do small amounts of hand washing for socks and undies.
Deborah Silva Oh my word that is brilliant!!! I’ll add it to my travel hack list. Thanks for watching!
Yes, the large bags are great for smushing the laundry, water and liquid soap together and then rinse and hange dry.
Great idea

Thanks for the info! Love that size for knick knacks too! Thank you, Sherry!
Dollar Tree has a portion snack baggie that fills vertically which allows a bottle to stand up like nail polish
I've never used the vacuum ziploc bags, but when using any bags, we always roll our clothes, and they fit into whatever bag we're putting them in.
SnowySpiritRuby So frugal! My mom would love your ideas!
I have migraines and use a doubled ziplock bags for an ice pack. Use a smaller bag to pack the ice tighter . Add a dish towel and instant ice pack! Most restaurants will give you ice if you explain it's for an pack.
like Dawn said below... we always bring a baggie full of assorted baggies along with some chip clips while traveling. so handy!
They are so helpful!
I love all your videos! You have been a godsend! Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
You are so down to earth! Thanks for sharing your tips. Hugs
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
Laurie, I love all your videos. I learn a lot even though we are not traveling that much during these covid times. Thank you very much!
I loved the DIY amenities tip. Now I am paying for my own travel I miss the faux luxury. I still like being a little bit spoilt. Phil.
I love watching all your videos. I grew up traveling, but I still almost always learn at least one new idea from your videos. Thank you for doing these!
Awesome! Thank you! I think I learn something new every trip as well. People watching gives me ideas too. Thanks for watching!
Packing delicate thin necklaces; slip one end into a shortened plastic straw then close up...prevents tangling.
I remove my medicine labels from the pill bottles, stick them on portion control snack bags i buy at target, then put my pills/vutamins inside.
Love all your videos!!!
Thanks for sharing!! Great ideas! Baggies are so helpful for travel/packing.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your ideas. I started using my small pill organizer bags for 2-3 antibacterial wipes. Perfect size!
Thank you for watching!

where's the link to your video for the new carry on rules?
Julie Om Ooh I need to go there anyways. Thanks for watching!
Julie Om Walmart has some wonderful square “snack size” bags that I like a lot better than the standard rectangular ones. FYI.
Just a quick tip about "stinky shoes" - place a new fabric softener sheet inside each shoe. It really helps cut down on the smell.
You are my kind of girl
I'm glad I'm not the only person with ocd on finding new uses for any kind of bags, especially the zip lock variety
Loves watching your informative video's
Keep it up 👍
Yay! If you look at items oddly enough, you can find new uses for them. Thanks for watching.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie resourceful is the word dear
Another great video jammed with helpful information, thanks so much!
You are so nice! Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much for the tips
All the stuff is beautiful
Thanks!
I used a compression bag for my fluffy coat when I went to Scotland. It smooshed small enough to fit in my front pocket of my luggage.
Oh wow! Yay. I bought one out of a vending machine and it packs up really small too. Thank you for watching!
Love your shirt!!
Thank you!! I ended up buying and keeping the black one. I love it!
I love all your videos, great tips!
Thanks so much!
I really appreciate your comments! Thanks for watching!
Makes everything so lightweight.
Used to travel for a living, used Ziploc bags for travel domestically and internationally. Cheap, disposable (if you want), items are visible for quick locating and can roll up to eliminate almost all air as well as a space bag.
Smart smart. Share all your ideas with me. Cannot wait to travel internationally again!
So smart; I do the same. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Alot if great ideas as always!
Thanks!
I have taken many sailboat trips so I love baggies. Another way to close a space bag is to sit on it.
Yessssss! Smart way to compress!
Great video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Hello Laurie can keep your long necklaces in a gallon bag alone and put them in your personal bag? Lovely job on your videos and great tips! 😊
Yes you can; I have done that.
hi ya! my mom has been using baggies for years when we travel. (we grew up travelling, it was a budget secret as packing cubes weren't the big thing they are now) in fact just before the pandemic, we'd taken a family cruise & we both forgot to pack extra baggies. so in port one day, we hit up the local convenience store to buy a box of ziploc bags. :)
Oh wow! We were on a cruise early March too. Thank you for watching!
Where did you get your red jewelry roll bag? Love all your ideas ! Hugs
Denise Storace Blaskovic Amazon like 4 years ago and do not have a link. Thanks for watching
Didn't find it there yet. The hunt continues. 🤣
Denise Storace Blaskovic try Container Store, EBay, Etsy, etc.
People used to think I was nuts for wiping down the entire airplane seat, seat belt, tray etc., when I got on a plane. now I'm normal!! LOL
Yes you are! I have to have that wipe now! Thanks for your support.
Oh my word; why have I NEVER thought of that. I'll share it!
The best thing about baggies is that you can see what's inside!
That's a great point, Gail!
I always have at least 2-3 ziplock baggies in my pants pocket. It's amazing how many times I need one for something!
Great idea! So true.
I love that, and the basket is brilliant! Thank you for watching!
Wow love it!
I'm glad! Thank you for watching!
Ick!
I love your shirt ... where did you get it? Thanks for all the tips also!
You're so welcome! It's Amazon: bit.ly/31TvbDj (size up because there's a knot). Thanks for watching!
I say use single package wipes. I put my power bank and lead wen I go out and think I may need it so I could do that for a trip.
Great tips! Btw does your husband ever fly out from El Paso Texas because he looks familiar and I think I may have flown on his plane a couple of times? Just curious. TFS Hugs 💕
Crafty Michele He has not but we want to visit and see the star! Thought about a road trip. Thanks for watching!
