  • Interesting details about the lightbar (respectively lightbars in general) below 🔽 Seen here is a nice (2004 - 2006) Dodge Durango of the East Jefferson Levee District Police Dodge as well as a Ford E-350 of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office being parked in front of New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport.
Below is some history about the Edge 9000 and Freedom as well as my opinion about those great lightbars and the last paragraph tells you how to get strobe & halogen flash patterns for LED lightbars.
Note the cool old Whelen Edge 9000 lightbar with strobes in the corners and halogens in the center of the front and rear! Kinda rare seeing that lightbar today!
The Edge 9000 was released in 1982, making it the first "flat" lightbar ever made! Back then most lightbars were like a foot high. Today most wouldn't call an Edge 9000/ Freedom flat. One of the thinnest lightbars today is the Whelen Legacy with a total height of just 41mm (the Freedom in comparison is 95mm high)!
With the change to LED technology In around 2005 the Whelen Edge 9000 eventually became the Whelen Freedom. Back when LED's in emergency lightbars were new, many lightbars had a mix of strobes and LED's. The Edge 9000/ Freedom has always been one of my favorite lightbars! Its brightness amazed me since I first saw it. Since then the Freedom (which is in its 4th generation today) beats any other lightbar in terms of brightness and functionality, especially with the many programmable options.
Also note that the exterior design didn't really change since they first brought out the Edge 9000 in 1982. The only thing that was removed over time was the unused black center part.
And here's a really cool thing if you prefer or like the look of strobes or halogens: You can still get the same look and flash patterns on LED lightbars! Yes, that's possible! 😁 Here's how:
The new Whelen Core - the best and most advanced programmable light & siren system ever made - offers plenty of flash patterns to choose from. The so called DVI patterns (DVI = Dynamic Variable Intensity) are exclusive to the Core. Those look exactly like halogens and you can choose from multiple DVI patterns. As usual for Whelen you can program every single module independently and basically do everything you want 😁
For the strobes you can use some of the available flash patterns like the Double Flash 150. Otherwise you can also try out the virtual inputs and create your own strobe pattern but that requires some more in-depth knowledge on how to set up virtual inputs/ cycling patterns.

Nice oldschool bars. I love it by my kids years from 90's TV series like Baywatch (on their Rangers and Scarab boats :-D) etc. ... Nice one.
