Because in MW1 you're fighting a radical terrorist cell *with* the russians on your side and nearly set off a nuclear war because you didn't do good enough of a job. And in 2 you're fighting a against a retaliation force because your own general decided that war is good for people, making you(unknowingly) the bad guy until the very end where you find out what's up with that. They are not enemies in the game either. Barkov is dictator of Uzikstan. NATO and Russians constantly try to not engage with eachother along the campaign. Everything that happens is a war between insurgents and Barkovs regim. At the end you can see that the Russians (Kamarov) are actually cooperating with NATO in the war on terror.
Yeah, coming up with war crimes for your "vanilla Russian villain" is one thing, and is acceptable. Rewriting the history, however, like the Highway of Death, is a whole different story and sets a dangerous precedent. I'm with you on this one.
I would have loved to see a split campaign. Half Russian side, half US side, with some Peshmerga levels. Do it GRRM style, where nobody's really evil or really good. Russian leader is a soldier following his orders for his country. American leader is the same. The Russians must crush opposition and an insurgency, and that means a lot of ugly up close killing, house to house, with infantry and tanks. Sometimes insurgents kill their buddies in the blink of an eye, and it makes dealing with civilians near impossible and always terrifying. Americans do cool special operations shit and have drones, but the violence is intense and they'll go beyond ROE for their missions. They still operate and kill, knowing it'll kill and cause suffering for civilians, but it denies Russia strategic assets. Then there are some levels as a Peshmerga, showing the realities of insurgency. This includes torturing collaborators, killing soldiers, and planting IED's where there will be civilian casualties. And following an ambush, they execute everyone surviving from the convoy. That would have been Call of Duty really stepping up and giving a serious true to life war story.

And even then they praise a lot of inventions from that time and people that ended in the employ of US government agencies like Braun. Really German is only a federal identity so most people will be proud of their people (Saxon, Bavarian, Thuringian, Frankonian...) or federal state/city. Then there is the nut cases where people have a good perception of Nazis even tho they are scarce. Also the enemy treatment mainly boils down to either the specific time slot of Nazi terror or successor governments on the moon or some shit so nothing associated with postwar governments usually. Whenever "Germans" ARE portrayed as the bad guys though it's usually in a deceptive or tech-savy but complicit way and usually some underground Nazi network or middle eastern cartel operating in Germany. Then there is the GDR which gets surprisingly little traction and most movies where the GDR is depicted as evil are from within Germany which is kind of odd - like there definitely is foreign made content too but nowhere near as much as German-made content. All in all I think we really like hating on our past ha ha. In comparison to Russia Germans definitely get the benefit of the doubt - whenever Germans are depicted it's usually ideological or individual in nature. Whenever Russians are depicted it's ideological, systemic or corrupt with much wider implications of complacency and contemporary critique.

And 3 just ties up loose ends and is kinda shit but keeps the spirit. I think. I haven't replayed it since release and i don't want to anyway.

The only reason why in the game J-12 heroically died fighting terrorists is that American Army is just jelaous. Because regulary, when they come to counter terrorist operation they see J-12 coming out of building and asking him:
- Leave anything for us?
- Just bodies.
We need a game where the us government ist evil. I just would love how U.S. gamers would flip out because they are not used beeing the bad guys.
Russkij Nemez well there’s plenty of games like that but the problem is that the solution is always some American fighting for truth, democracy and apple fucking pie so the point falls flat on its face.
Technically Black Ops 3 did that. It just focused too much on the Inception part of the story, not the politics, where US/WA were the bad guys.
MW2 did that decently
@@3dcomrade Eh I'd disagree tbh. The only time America did something bad was the airport attack. Even then, that was Shepherd, not necessarily "America". And then what happened afterwards? Russia immediately attacks with millions of troops without a formal declaration of war? Not exactly a valid casus belli just because one American was found at a crime scene. Every time we see or hear the US high command, they're always on the back foot or upset that they didn't see this coming - aka victims.

Dark Gn0ll Correct me if I’m wrong but you Germans got a worse treatment right? I heard like you guys can’t even be a bit nationalistic because everyone else in the world will call you Nazis right?
@@mingQWERTY not anymore really - now they call us whoosies for not being proud of what there is to be proud of apart from the 12 years of Nazi reign.
Of Nazis really where as bad as they are portrayed it is weird the war didn't end in 1941
Im bored of nazis. It would be okay to have german person gone bad like many other nationalities. Like with cultural understanding, no stereotypical lazy character. Even russian stereotypes are old, same stuff for 60 years.
